Start by checking three things in order: the Wowza source and output are active, the Wowza RTMP target matches the stream URL and key for the YouTube event you intend to use, and YouTube’s Live Control Room shows an incoming preview. A preview means YouTube is receiving the stream; you may still need to start the event for viewers. Wowza now calls Streaming Cloud “Wowza Video,” so current instructions and interface labels may differ from older guides.
Check the stream path in order
A stream reaches viewers only after the source is active, Wowza sends the intended output to the right YouTube event, and the event is started for viewers. Use each checkpoint to narrow down where the path stops; a missing preview alone does not identify a specific cause.
- Confirm the Wowza source and output. In Wowza Video, open the live stream and its Components or output list. Confirm that the intended source is running and the output rendition you plan to send exists and is active. Interface details in older Wowza guides may not match the current UI; use its equivalent status or preview.
- Check the saved external-service target. Verify that its destination is RTMP and that its URL and stream key belong to the YouTube event you are checking. The exact fields and formatting are described below.
- Check YouTube’s incoming preview. Open the intended event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. When YouTube receives the stream, a preview should appear automatically.
- Start the event for viewers. Receiving a stream and showing its preview are not the same as broadcasting publicly. Once the preview is present, use the event’s live controls to begin the broadcast.
Set up the YouTube RTMP destination in Wowza Video
1. Get credentials from the correct YouTube event
In YouTube Studio, make sure the channel or account is set up to broadcast live, then create or select the event you want to use. Open that event’s Stream Settings and note its primary stream URL and stream key. The backup URL is optional.
2. Add the external service
- In Wowza Video, open the live stream and its Components or output list.
- Select the intended output rendition, choose Add external service, and select RTMP.
- Give the target a recognizable name so you can distinguish it from other destinations.
- Enter the YouTube event’s primary URL as the target URL and its stream key as the stream name.
- Follow Wowza’s URL formatting instructions: omit the
rtmpprefix and trailing slash from URL fields. Leave the target username and password blank. Add the backup URL only if you want to use it. - Save the target, then start the Wowza stream or source as required by your workflow.
These field instructions are from Wowza’s current Wowza Video guide for YouTube Live, updated February 24, 2025.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If YouTube still shows no incoming preview
- Compare the event and target. Make sure the URL and key saved in Wowza are for the same YouTube event currently open in Live Control Room. If you switched events, update the target to match the selected event’s Stream Settings.
- Verify the intended Wowza output. Confirm the source is active and that you selected the output rendition you meant to send, rather than assuming an active source means the destination is receiving it.
- Recheck the RTMP fields. Look for a copied URL or key that does not match the event, an unwanted
rtmpprefix or trailing slash in a URL field, or text entered in the username or password fields, which Wowza says to leave blank. - Separate receipt from broadcast. If a preview is already visible, YouTube is receiving the stream. Use the event controls to start the broadcast to viewers rather than changing the Wowza target without a reason.
These checks follow the documented target fields and preview checkpoints; they are not a published list of failure codes, and the documentation cannot establish the cause for a particular account without inspecting its configuration.
Use the right Wowza instructions
Wowza’s support page says, “Wowza Streaming Cloud is now Wowza Video.” Existing Streaming Cloud customers retain functionality in the UI and API, though they may see a newer interface. If an older guide’s labels do not match your account, look for the equivalent current status, output, or preview controls.

Do not apply Wowza Streaming Engine steps as if they were the Wowza Video interface. Wowza’s current Wowza Video guide covers an external-service destination; its separate Streaming Engine documentation describes a different configuration object, Stream Targets. The Engine’s Waiting, Active, or Error statuses are not established here as Wowza Video statuses. Wowza’s naming clarification explains the product change. A legacy Wowza Video workflow also corroborates checking Wowza and YouTube previews, but its precise interface steps are legacy.
