Windows PC problems that look similar can have different causes: a slow computer may be short on storage or overloaded with startup apps, while a crash or failed startup may involve a driver, software, or hardware. Start with the symptom and any recent changes; there is no single fix for every PC.
Why is my Windows PC so slow?
A slow boot, sluggish response, or unusually high CPU or disk use can point to several different issues. Microsoft identifies limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, malware, and hardware that no longer meets current demands as possible contributors. More than one factor may be involved.

- Check what is using resources. Open Task Manager and review the Processes and Performance views for apps or processes consuming substantial CPU, memory, or disk. Use the Startup apps view to review programs that launch with Windows.
- Review updates. Check Windows Update and available optional driver updates. If the slowdown began after a recent change, note that timing before changing drivers or removing software.
- Scan for malware. Run a scan using the built-in Windows Security app. Malware can consume CPU and disk resources.
- Free storage. Check available space and use Storage Sense or Disk Cleanup to remove files you no longer need.
- Assess the hardware only after these checks. Software steps may have little effect when an older PC is the limiting factor; in that case, replacing or upgrading the device may be the more durable option.
Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance covers both Windows 11 and Windows 10 and notes that several causes can contribute at once.

Why won’t my PC start, or why does it keep freezing?
“Won’t start” can describe different failures: Windows may not boot, the PC may stop at a bug-check crash, or the system may freeze or hang. These situations need different diagnostic paths, so record exactly what happens rather than treating them as one problem.

- Does the PC power on but fail to reach the Windows sign-in screen?
- Does Windows display an error and restart or shut down?
- Does the desktop appear, then become unresponsive?
- Did the issue begin after a new device, driver, update, or software installation?
Write down any displayed message and recent changes before trying repairs. Advanced boot and crash-dump procedures are intended for trained troubleshooters; if Windows will not start and you are unsure how to proceed, seek qualified help rather than making risky changes.

What does a blue screen, black screen, or stop code mean?
A stop-code screen appears when Windows encounters a serious problem and shuts down or restarts. The code is a clue, not a diagnosis: hardware, a driver, or software may be responsible. Capture the stop code and any “what failed” module name shown on screen.

Microsoft says Windows 11 version 24H2 and later may show a black screen for this error, while earlier versions show a blue screen. The color alone does not identify the cause.

What to try when the error keeps recurring
- Disconnect recently added hardware and see whether the problem returns.
- If Windows can start only in a limited way, try Safe Mode.
- In Device Manager, look for devices with reported problems and review relevant drivers.
- Check that the Windows drive has free space.
- Install available Windows updates.
- If the failure continues, consider an appropriate Windows recovery option. Back up important files first when possible.
Microsoft’s stop-code troubleshooting guidance describes these basic checks. A recurring code may still require hardware or driver diagnosis; the code name alone does not guarantee a fix.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. Windows 10 PCs continue to work, but their support and security-update status differs from supported Windows versions. Check your Windows edition and version before following version-specific instructions. Microsoft’s performance guidance includes this support notice.
