A TV screen going black can come from the selected input, a connected device, a cable, or the television itself. The symptom alone does not prove that the panel or another internal part has failed. Start by checking whether the TV’s own menu or volume indicator appears, then isolate the input and connected equipment before considering a model-specific restart.
Why is my TV screen going black?
The likely place to investigate depends on what you see and hear. A “No Signal” message points first to input selection or the connected source; sound without a picture can involve the source device, its connection, or the TV. If the TV’s own menu appears, its display is producing an image, so focus on the signal path before assuming an internal fault.

- “No Signal” on screen: Check that the TV is set to the input the device uses and that the device is powered on.
- Sound but no picture: Restart the source device and inspect its HDMI connection; a frozen device, loose or damaged cable, or TV fault are all possible.
- No menu or onscreen indicator: Continue with the checks below. This symptom alone does not identify which component, if any, has failed.
What to check first when the TV screen is black
1. See whether the TV can display its own controls
Confirm that the TV is on, then press Volume or Home on the remote. If an onscreen volume indicator or menu appears, the display is responding; investigate the selected input, external source, or connection. If nothing appears, do not treat that as proof of a particular internal failure.

2. Check the input and source device
If “No Signal” appears, choose the input connected to your set-top box, streaming device, game console, or other source. Make sure the device is powered on. If it may have frozen, restart it and check the TV again.

3. Reseat and isolate the connection
With the equipment accessible, check the HDMI cable at both ends and reconnect it securely. If possible, try another input or external source. When only one HDMI source is affected, concentrate on that device and its cable. A known-working cable can help isolate a cable problem; Samsung also recommends trying different device-and-cable arrangements, and some TVs provide an HDMI cable test. A black screen alone is not a reason to buy a replacement cable.
How to restart a TV safely
Use the restart or power-reset instructions for your exact TV model. Button sequences and procedures are not universal. For example, LG’s US no-picture/no-sound guidance describes disconnecting the TV from power and holding its physical power button for about 10 seconds; follow that sequence only if it applies to your model. Sony directs users to reset steps for their specific TV.

A factory reset is different from a simple restart: Sony warns that it erases current settings and requires setup again. Check the model-specific instructions and consider that consequence before choosing a factory reset.

When to contact the manufacturer or a repair professional
If the screen remains blank after checking the TV’s own display controls, input, source device, connections, and applicable model-specific restart, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair professional. A blank screen with no messages may require professional inspection. These checks cannot determine remotely whether a panel, backlight, board, power component, or something else is at fault, so avoid guessing at a repair or its cost.
