Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If your Samsung freezer has stopped making ice, start by checking that the freezer door seals, ice production is switched on, and the ice bucket is seated correctly. Then check the water supply and filter, and use only the reset procedure for your model and ice-maker location. Samsung says ice may start returning within three hours, while normal production can take up to 24 hours.
Start with the simple checks
Make sure the freezer door closes and seals
A freezer-mounted ice maker may stop producing ice if the compartment is too warm because the door is not sealing properly. Check that the door closes fully and that frost or an obstruction is not interfering with the seal.

Confirm ice production is on
Look for an Ice Off indicator or the ice-maker control for your model. Depending on the refrigerator, the setting may be on the control panel, in Family Hub’s Fridge Manager, or in SmartThings. Models with two ice makers may have separate controls, so check the indicator for the freezer maker rather than assuming one switch controls both.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck the bucket
Make sure the bucket is installed correctly and contains only ice. A misplaced bucket or other items inside it can interfere with ice ejection or make the maker register as full. Follow the manual for your refrigerator when removing or reinstalling the bucket.

Check whether water can reach the ice maker
Inspect the supply line and valve
Confirm the refrigerator’s water valve is fully open and the line is connected, with no kink or pinch restricting flow. If the ice-maker test cycles but does not add water, the supply is a likely place to investigate.
Use Samsung’s flow check where it applies
For applicable dispenser-equipped models, Samsung’s check is at least 6 ounces (three-quarters of a cup) of water in less than 10 seconds. Samsung also identifies 20 psi as a minimum pressure in relevant troubleshooting situations; low pressure can stop ice production or result in small cubes. These checks are not a universal diagnosis for every model. A reverse-osmosis system can also leave pressure too low; Samsung recommends contacting a plumber to increase it.
Consider the filter
A filter past its service life can restrict water flow enough to affect ice production. Samsung rates its filters for 300 gallons, which it describes as about six months of average household use, and recommends changing them every six months. Its listed filter families include HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1. Match the replacement to the part number on the installed filter or to your refrigerator manual; these families are not interchangeable across every Samsung model.
If water flow is poor, compare it with and without the filter only if Samsung’s instructions for your model allow that check. If removing the filter restores flow, a model-matched replacement may be needed. Do not keep operating the refrigerator without a filter unless the model instructions say that is acceptable.

Reset the ice maker only if the procedure matches your model
Samsung’s freezer-door reset instructions apply to the freezer-door ice maker described in its guide, not every Samsung ice-maker layout. Check your refrigerator manual or the matching Samsung support guide if the maker is in another location.
-
Remove the ice bucket according to your model’s instructions and locate the Test button.
-
Press and hold Test until you hear a chime. If there is no chime but the maker moves, Samsung considers the reset complete.

Samsung cautions: “Do not press Test repeatedly after the ice tray is filled with ice or water. The water may overflow or the ice may jam.” Do not force a stuck bucket or attempt to manually defrost the ice maker. Samsung says the maker has an automatic defrost function and warns that manual defrosting may damage it; if it remains frozen, arrange service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Allow time for production to recover
After troubleshooting, Samsung says ice should begin returning within three hours, but normal production may take up to 24 hours to resume. During recovery, dispense ice occasionally so it does not pile up at one end of the bucket and trigger a false full reading.
Samsung describes different production rates for different ice-maker locations: a fridge-compartment maker produces one tray every 45–65 minutes, while a freezer-compartment maker produces one tray every 85 minutes. Samsung defines a tray as eight cubes for a full-size refrigerator and six for a counter-depth refrigerator. These are location-specific reference rates, not a single rate for all models.

| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| No ice at all | Check the door seal, ice setting, bucket position, water supply, and model-appropriate reset procedure. Allow the recovery time above. |
| Small cubes | Low water pressure can produce undersized cubes. Check the valve, line, and filter; use Samsung’s pressure or flow checks only where they apply to your model. |
| Cloudy white ice | Samsung says this can be normal: rapid freezing can trap small amounts of minerals and gases. |
| Dark flecks or particles | Samsung says dirty ice is not normal. Possible causes include an expired or damaged filter, a dirty water supply, or a damaged bucket. Persistent contamination or visible damage calls for support. |
| Clumped ice or ice that will not dispense | Clumping can block dispensing or make the maker register the bucket as full. Check for a misplaced bucket or ice buildup. |
| Slushy or frosty cubes | Samsung associates slushy or frosty cubes with frost in the bucket. If the problem persists or the maker itself is frozen, do not manually defrost it; request service. |
When to contact Samsung support
Request service if no ice returns after three hours, the correctly performed test produces no chime or movement, an error code appears, or the ice maker is frozen over or visibly damaged. Have the refrigerator’s model number and the exact ice-maker location ready, because controls, bucket removal, and reset steps vary between models. Use Samsung’s model-specific manual or support instructions rather than trying a reset sequence intended for a different design.
