A Facebook Reel upload can get stuck for several simple reasons: a weak internet connection, a temporary Facebook app glitch, a video file that does not upload cleanly, or an issue on Facebook’s servers. When the progress bar freezes or the upload keeps spinning, the problem is usually fixable without recreating the Reel from scratch.
The quickest approach is to check your connection first, then refresh the app, clear cached data, and make sure the video meets Facebook’s supported format, size, and length requirements. If everything looks fine on your device, waiting a bit or trying the upload from another phone, browser, or network can often get the Reel posted successfully.

Common Reasons Your Facebook Reel Upload Gets Stuck
A Facebook Reel upload can freeze at processing, sit at 0%, stop near the end, or fail after appearing to upload successfully. In most cases, the problem is not the Reel itself being “lost,” but something interrupting the transfer, conversion, or publishing step. Facebook has to upload the video from your phone, process it on its servers, apply any edits, check the file, and then publish it to your profile, Page, or feed. If any part of that chain breaks, the upload may look stuck.
The most common cause is an unstable internet connection. Reels are video files, so they need a steady upload path, not just a connection that can load posts or play videos. A Wi-Fi network may look connected but still have weak upload speed, packet loss, or router congestion. Mobile data can also drop when you move between towers, enter a low-signal area, or have data saver enabled. If the upload keeps pausing or restarts repeatedly, the connection is usually the first thing to check.

Facebook app glitches are another frequent reason. The app may have a temporary bug, a background process may hang, or cached data may interfere with the upload screen. This is especially common if you have been using Facebook for a long time without closing it, edited the Reel inside the app, switched between apps during upload, or locked your phone while the Reel was still processing. Low device storage, battery saver mode, and aggressive background app restrictions can also stop Facebook from finishing the upload.
Unsupported or heavy video settings can also make a Reel get stuck. Facebook supports common formats like MP4, but problems can happen when a file uses unusual codecs, very high bitrates, variable frame rates, HDR settings, or a resolution that is difficult for the app to process. A very large file, long clip, or Reel exported from an editing app with nonstandard audio can take much longer to process or fail without a clear error. If the same Reel gets stuck every time while other videos upload normally, the file settings are likely involved.
Sometimes the issue is on Facebook’s side. Server congestion, temporary outages, account-specific publishing delays, or problems with Reels processing can cause uploads to remain pending even when your phone and connection are fine. This is more likely if other users are reporting problems, your upload fails on mulle networks, or the Reel reaches the processing stage but never publishes. In that case, waiting and trying again later often works better than repeatedly tapping upload.
- Connection problems: weak Wi-Fi, slow upload speed, mobile signal drops, VPN interruptions, or data saver settings.
- App issues: frozen upload screen, corrupted cache, outdated Facebook app, or background restrictions on your phone.
- Video file problems: unsupported codec, oversized file, high bitrate, unusual frame rate, HDR export, or audio compatibility issues.
- Device limitations: low storage, low battery mode, overheating, or not enough memory to process the video.
- Facebook server problems: temporary outages, Reels processing delays, or publishing issues affecting some accounts.
Identifying which category fits your situation makes the fix much faster. If all uploads fail, focus on your connection, app, or device. If only one Reel gets stuck, check the video format and export settings. If the upload fails everywhere and nothing changed on your phone, the problem may be temporary on Facebook’s end.
Check Your Internet Connection and Upload Speed
A Facebook Reel upload can appear stuck when your connection is unstable, even if other apps seem to be working. Uploading video requires a steadier connection than scrolling, messaging, or watching short clips because Facebook has to send the full file from your phone to its servers. If the signal drops, switches between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or slows down in the background, the progress bar may freeze at a certain percentage or sit on “Finishing” for several minutes.
Start by checking whether your internet connection is strong enough for an upload. If you are on Wi-Fi, move closer to the router and avoid uploading from rooms with weak signal. If you are using mobile data, make sure you have a solid 4G or 5G connection and enough data available on your plan. A Reel may fail or stall if your phone is connected to a congested public Wi-Fi network, a hotel network, or a hotspot with limited upstream speed.
Quick connection checks to try
- Run a speed test: Use any speed test app or website and look at the upload speed, not just the download speed. For short Reels, an upload speed of at least 3-5 Mbps is usually workable, while larger or higher-resolution videos benefit from faster speeds.
- Switch networks: If your Reel is stuck on Wi-Fi, turn Wi-Fi off and try mobile data. If it is stuck on mobile data, connect to a reliable private Wi-Fi network.
- Turn Airplane Mode on and off: Enable Airplane Mode for about 10 seconds, then turn it off. This forces your phone to reconnect to the network and can clear temporary connection problems.
- Disable VPN or proxy apps: VPNs can slow uploads or route traffic through overloaded servers. Temporarily turn them off and try uploading again.
- Pause other uploads: Stop cloud backups, large file transfers, app updates, or video uploads in other apps while Facebook is uploading your Reel.
If the upload has been stuck for a long time, do not keep tapping the post button repeatedly. First, copy your caption and save the Reel to your device if you have not already done so. Then close Facebook, reconnect to a stronger network, and start the upload again. This helps avoid duplicate posts while giving the app a fresh connection to work with.

Also check your phone’s data settings. On iPhone, make sure Low Data Mode is not restricting background activity for the network you are using. On Android, check that Data Saver is not limiting Facebook and that the app is allowed to use mobile data in the background. If your battery saver mode is aggressive, it may also interrupt long uploads when you leave Facebook or lock the screen, so keep the app open until the Reel finishes posting.
Restart Facebook and Clear App Cache
If your Facebook Reel upload is stuck after you have already checked your connection, the next quick fix is to restart the Facebook app and clear its cached data. The app stores temporary files to make feeds, previews, drafts, and upload screens load faster, but those files can become outdated or corrupted. When that happens, the Reel may sit on “Uploading,” freeze at a certain percentage, or fail right before posting.
Start with a simple restart. Close Facebook completely instead of just swiping back to your home screen. On iPhone, open the app switcher and swipe Facebook away. On Android, open recent apps and close Facebook from there, or use Force stop in the app settings. Then reopen Facebook, go back to your Reel, and try uploading again. If the upload was only stuck because of a temporary app glitch, this often gets it moving without changing anything else.
Clear the Facebook cache on Android
- Open Settings on your phone.
- Go to Apps or Apps & notifications.
- Select Facebook.
- Tap Storage or Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Reopen Facebook and try uploading the Reel again.
Clearing the cache does not delete your Facebook account, posts, photos, or messages. It only removes temporary app files. Avoid tapping Clear data or Clear storage unless you are comfortable signing back in and resetting local app preferences. For an upload issue, Clear cache is usually enough.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsClear Facebook cache on iPhone
iPhone does not offer the same one-tap cache clearing option for most apps. Instead, first close and reopen Facebook. If the Reel is still stuck, open Facebook and check whether there is an in-app browser cache option under Menu > Settings & privacy > Settings > Browser, then clear browsing data if available. This mainly clears web content opened inside Facebook, but it can still help when the app is behaving unpredictably.
If restarting does not help on iPhone, the more complete cache reset is to remove and reinstall the app. Before doing that, make sure your Reel video is saved to your phone’s camera roll or gallery, not only sitting as an unfinished Facebook draft. After reinstalling, sign back in, select the saved video again, and upload it as a new Reel.
Quick checks before uploading again
- Save the original video: Keep a copy in your gallery so you do not lose edits if the draft fails.
- Turn off battery saver: Low power modes can limit background activity and interrupt uploads.
- Keep Facebook open: Stay on the upload screen for a few minutes, especially on slower connections.
- Remove stuck drafts: If the same draft keeps freezing, create a fresh Reel from the saved video file.
After clearing the cache or restarting the app, upload the Reel again from scratch if possible. A fresh upload gives Facebook a clean session, which can resolve stuck progress bars caused by temporary app errors, failed draft data, or cached upload information.

Verify Your Reel Format, Size, and Length
If your Facebook Reel upload keeps freezing, processing forever, or failing near the end, the video file itself may be the problem. Facebook can handle many common video files, but uploads are more likely to get stuck when the Reel uses an unusual codec, a very large file size, a non-standard frame rate, or a format exported from an editing app with settings Facebook does not process smoothly.
Recommended Free Tools
Start by checking the basics: use an MP4 file whenever possible, with H.264 video and AAC audio. These settings are widely supported and usually upload more reliably than MOV files, HEVC/H.265 exports, screen recordings with variable frame rates, or videos saved from third-party apps with heavy compression. If your Reel was edited in CapCut, iMovie, Premiere Rush, Canva, or another editor, export it again using a standard “MP4” or “social media” preset.
- Format: MP4 is the safest choice for Facebook Reels.
- Video codec: H.264 is generally more compatible than H.265/HEVC.
- Audio codec: AAC audio helps avoid processing errors.
- Orientation: Vertical 9:16 video works best for Reels.
- Resolution: 1080 x 1920 is a reliable target for vertical uploads.
- Frame rate: 30 fps is a safe option if your upload keeps failing.
File size can also cause trouble, especially on slower connections or older phones. Even if the video length is allowed, a very high-bitrate 4K file can take a long time to upload and may appear stuck. If the progress bar stops repeatedly, make a smaller copy of the Reel: export at 1080p instead of 4K, choose 30 fps instead of 60 fps, and avoid extremely high quality or “maximum bitrate” export settings. The Reel will still look good on mobile, but the smaller file is easier for Facebook to upload and process.
Length matters too. Facebook Reels commonly support short vertical videos, but limits can vary by account, region, app version, and where you are posting from. If your Reel is close to the maximum allowed length, trim a few seconds and try again. Also remove long blank endings, heavy transitions, oversized animated text layers, or complex effects that may create a large or unusual export file.
Quick fixes for video file problems
- Open the video in your phone’s gallery and confirm it plays all the way through without freezing.
- Re-export the Reel as an MP4 using H.264 video and AAC audio.
- Resize the video to 1080 x 1920 if it was exported in 4K or an unusual resolution.
- Lower the frame rate to 30 fps if the original was 60 fps or variable frame rate.
- Trim the Reel slightly if it is near the length limit.
- Save a fresh copy of the file, then upload that new version to Facebook.
If you recorded the Reel on one device and edited it on another, avoid sending it through apps that may alter the file in the background. Instead, transfer it with a cloud drive, AirDrop, cable, or another method that preserves the original quality. Once the file is in a standard format with a reasonable size and length, Facebook is much less likely to hang during upload or get stuck while processing.

If your Facebook Reel upload is stuck even after checking your connection, clearing cache, and confirming the video format, the app itself may be the problem. Older versions of the Facebook app can have upload bugs, broken Reel tools, or compatibility issues with newer Android or iOS updates. Updating the app gives you the latest fixes for media uploads, background processing, permissions, and Reel publishing features.
Start by checking for an update in your phone’s app store. On iPhone, open the App Store, tap your profile icon, and look for Facebook under available updates. On Android, open the Google Play Store, search for Facebook, and tap Update if the button appears. After updating, fully close Facebook, reopen it, and try uploading the Reel again from your camera roll. If the upload was stuck on a specific draft, create a new Reel post instead of resuming the frozen one.

If updating does not help, reinstalling Facebook can remove corrupted app files that cache clearing may not fix. Before deleting the app, make sure you know your Facebook login details and have access to any two-factor authentication method tied to your account. Your Facebook account, photos, pages, messages, and published posts are stored online, so deleting the app from your phone will not delete your account. However, unsaved Reel drafts stored only inside the app may be removed, so save the video to your device before uninstalling if possible.
How to reinstall Facebook safely
- Save your Reel locally: Export or save the edited video to your phone’s gallery if Facebook allows it.
- Uninstall the app: Remove Facebook from your device using your phone’s app settings or home screen menu.
- Restart your phone: This clears temporary system processes that may still affect uploads.
- Install Facebook again: Download it only from the App Store or Google Play Store.
- Log back in and allow permissions: Give Facebook access to photos, videos, microphone, and mobile data or Wi-Fi when prompted.
After reinstalling, test with a short Reel first, such as a 5 to 10 second clip. If that uploads successfully, try your original Reel again. If the original still gets stuck, the issue is likely tied to that specific file, edit, audio track, or upload session rather than the app installation. In that case, export the video again, remove heavy effects, choose a different audio track, or upload from another device to narrow down the cause.
Try Uploading Again Later or From Another Device
If your Facebook Reel is still stuck after checking your connection, clearing cache, confirming the video format, and updating the app, the problem may not be on your phone at all. Facebook uploads depend on Meta’s servers, background processing, and your account’s current session. When those systems are slow or temporarily unavailable, a Reel can sit at “uploading,” freeze near the end, or fail without a clear error message.
Wait 15 to 30 minutes, then try again before making more changes to the video. During busy periods, such as evenings, weekends, or after a major Facebook app update, uploads may process more slowly. Close Facebook completely, reopen it, and check whether the Reel is still in drafts or still pending. If it appears stuck, cancel the upload if possible, save the Reel to your device, and start a fresh upload.
Try a Different Device or Upload Method
If the upload keeps failing on the same phone, try posting the Reel from another device. For example, send the finished video to another iPhone, Android phone, tablet, or computer and upload it from there. This can help if the issue is caused by a device-specific bug, low storage, corrupted temporary files, or a bad Facebook app session on your original device.
- Use another phone: Transfer the video using AirDrop, Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox, or a direct cable, then upload it through the Facebook app.
- Try a desktop browser: Go to Facebook in Chrome, Edge, Safari, or Firefox and upload the video from your computer if Reel posting is available for your account or Page.
- Switch networks: If you already tried Wi-Fi, test mobile data, or use a different Wi-Fi network with a stronger upload speed.
- Post from Meta Business Suite: If the Reel is for a Page, try uploading through Meta Business Suite instead of the standard Facebook app.
Before uploading from another device, make sure the video file is fully downloaded and not compressed in a way that damages quality or changes the format. Keep the file in a common format such as MP4, and avoid repeatedly editing and exporting the same clip through mulle apps, since that can create encoding problems that Facebook struggles to process.
You can also check whether Facebook is having a wider outage. Search online for “Facebook down” or check a service-status site to see if other users are reporting upload failures. If there is an active outage, the best fix is to wait and try again later. Keep a copy of your Reel saved locally, and avoid deleting drafts until you confirm the final post is live on your profile, Page, or feed.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I wait before assuming my Facebook Reel upload is stuck?
If the progress bar has not moved for 10 to 15 minutes, especially on a short Reel, it is usually stuck. Try switching from mobile data to Wi-Fi, closing and reopening Facebook, then uploading again. If the video is large or your upload speed is slow, it may take longer than expected.
Will I lose my Reel if I close Facebook while it is uploading?
You may lose the active upload if you force close the app, but the original video should still be saved on your phone if it came from your camera roll. Before closing Facebook, make sure the Reel is saved locally. If you edited it inside Facebook, check drafts first because unsaved edits may disappear.
What video format works best for Facebook Reels?
Facebook Reels work best as MP4 videos using a vertical 9:16 format, such as 1080 x 1920 resolution. Avoid unusual codecs, very large files, or videos exported from editing apps with unsupported settings. If the upload keeps freezing, re-export the video as MP4 and try again.

Yes, a weak or unstable connection can make the upload freeze at the beginning, near the end, or while processing. Test your upload speed, move closer to your Wi-Fi router, or switch networks. If possible, avoid uploading while using a VPN or while other apps are heavily using your connection.
What should I do if every Reel gets stuck even after restarting the app?
Clear the Facebook app cache on Android, or delete and reinstall the app on iPhone if the problem continues. Also check for Facebook updates, restart your phone, and try uploading from another device or browser. If mulle users are reporting the same issue, Facebook may be having a server-side problem and waiting is often the only fix.
Bottom Line
If your Facebook Reel upload is stuck, the cause is usually a weak connection, a temporary app glitch, an unsupported video file, or an issue on Facebook’s side. Start with the fastest fixes: switch networks, restart the app, update Facebook, clear cache, and try uploading the Reel again.
If it still will not upload, check the video format, reduce the file size or resolution, and wait a little while in case Facebook is having server problems. Once you rule out the basics, re-exporting the video in a standard format like MP4 is often the quickest path to a successful upload.
