If your Nespresso Vertuo POP+ is not brewing, first check that the water tank is seated and filled, a fresh Vertuo capsule is positioned correctly, and the lever is fully turned to LOCK. Then give the machine a moment: it reads the capsule barcode and pre-wets the coffee before liquid appears. If it still will not brew, use the light pattern and what the machine is doing to choose the next step.
Start with water, capsule, and lever
- Check the water supply. Fill the tank with fresh drinking water and make sure it is seated properly. The Vertuo Pop+ manual lists an empty tank among the causes of no coffee or water.
- Check the capsule. Wait until the machine is not brewing, then open the head. Eject any spent capsule and insert a fresh, undamaged Vertuo capsule in the correct position.
- Lock the head. Close it and turn the lever fully to LOCK, then press the button once.
- Wait briefly before diagnosing a fault. Nespresso says the machine reads the capsule code and pre-wets and infuses the coffee before flow begins. A short delay after pressing the button is normal.
Never open the head while coffee is flowing. To stop a brew early, press the button once and wait for the machine to stop before opening it. See the Vertuo Pop+ User Manual for operation and safety instructions.

Use the light pattern to narrow down the cause
| What you see | What to do |

| Button is dark | The machine may have gone into automatic OFF after two minutes without use. Press the button or unlock the machine. If it stays dark, check the outlet, plug, voltage, and fuse. |
| One blink, then one pause | Fill the water tank and make sure the lever is locked. |
| Light blinks while coffee flows normally | The manual describes blinking during normal brewing as normal operation. |
| Light blinks but there is no flow | Allow time for capsule reading and pre-wetting, then check the capsule, lever, and water. If the machine has been used extensively, let it cool for about 20 minutes. |
| Two blinks, then one pause, continuously | During brewing, check the capsule, lever lock, and water. During cleaning, descaling, or emptying, check that there is no capsule and that the lever is locked. If the pattern persists, follow the restart steps below. |
| Three orange blinks before steady white | This is the descaling alert. Follow the complete descaling procedure in the manual. |
The meaning of a blinking light depends on its pattern and whether the machine is brewing or in a maintenance mode. Nespresso’s Vertuo Pop Machine Assistance page gives US troubleshooting details.

If the machine has been used heavily, let it cool
If the light blinks and the machine is not running after extensive use, Nespresso’s manual directs you to switch the machine off for three seconds, switch it back on, and let it cool for about 20 minutes before trying again.

Clean only when the symptoms point to residue
If you see coffee grounds
Nespresso directs users to run the cleaning procedure twice when coffee grounds appear. The manual also recommends cleaning monthly, after a long period without use, or when residue is present. Run the rinse cycle with no capsule; it can take up to seven minutes.
If the descaling alert appears
Follow the manual’s full procedure rather than treating descaling as a general fix for every no-brew problem. Nespresso specifies one unit of its descaling liquid mixed with 0.5 L of water. The procedure takes about 20 minutes and cannot be interrupted. The solution can be harmful: avoid contact with skin, eyes, and surfaces.

Restart after a persistent two-blink fault
- Check that the capsule is correctly positioned and replace it if needed. Confirm the lever is locked and the tank contains water.
- If the two-blinks/one-pause pattern continues, unplug the machine for 10 seconds, then plug it back in and restart.
- If the prescribed checks and restart do not resolve the issue, contact Nespresso rather than opening or repairing the machine internally.
