A laptop fan that runs often is usually responding to heat, not necessarily failing. Sustained CPU activity, background updates, charging, warm surroundings, or blocked vents can all increase cooling demand. Windows 11 gives you a few safe checks to try, but exact fan behavior and controls depend on your laptop model.
Why a laptop fan keeps running
The fan moves heat away from internal components. Heavy work, even from an app running in the background, can warm a laptop enough to make its fan run faster. Charging and a warm room can add to the load, while blocked vents make it harder for the laptop to release heat.

Microsoft explains that Surface fan speed responds to workload and heat; this is guidance for Surface devices, not a guarantee about every Windows laptop. On Surface devices, Microsoft also notes that setup tasks such as updates and syncing can temporarily increase fan activity during the first 24 hours after setup, and that a Surface may need more cooling in ambient temperatures above 25°C (77°F) or while charging before full charge. How to troubleshoot it safely
1. Check which apps are using the CPU
- Open Task Manager. If the window is in its compact view, select More details.
- On the Processes list, select the CPU column heading to sort by CPU use.
- Look for an app or process using substantial CPU over time. Save your work and close apps you recognize and do not need.
- If you do not recognize a process, look it up before stopping it. A name alone does not establish that it is malware or faulty.
Microsoft and HP both recommend using Task Manager’s CPU sorting to identify resource use. HP notes that even a low but constant CPU load of 3% to 4% can increase fan speed in its notebook troubleshooting guidance; that observation is specific to HP and is not a universal threshold. 2. Try a less performance-focused power mode
Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. Try Balanced or Best power efficiency, then compare fan activity while doing the same tasks. Best power efficiency favors saving power, Balanced aims to balance performance and battery life, and Best performance prioritizes performance. The last option can make a laptop warmer and drain its battery faster. Actual fan response depends on the device and workload, so changing the mode may reduce activity but is not guaranteed to stop the fan.

3. Make sure the vents can breathe
- Place the laptop on a hard, level surface.
- Check that intake and exhaust vents are not covered by fabric, papers, or other objects.
- If you suspect dust buildup, follow the cleaning instructions for your exact model. HP advises turning off its notebooks before vacuuming dust from vents; that is HP-specific guidance, not a universal cleaning method.
- Do not open the chassis unless the manufacturer’s service instructions for your model say to do so.
HP warns that cloth surfaces such as beds or cushions can restrict airflow, and that dust around vents can make fans work harder. Follow your own laptop maker’s directions for cleaning and service. HP notebook fan troubleshooting
4. Check for setup work and supported updates
After setting up a laptop, background updates and syncing may temporarily use system resources. Microsoft specifically describes this during the first 24 hours on Surface devices; it is not a guaranteed explanation for every laptop. Install Windows updates, and check the laptop maker’s supported driver or firmware tools for your model. Avoid using an arbitrary BIOS update or third-party driver as a fan fix.

When to contact the laptop maker
Seek model-specific support if the fan remains loud while the laptop is idle and cool, makes an unusual mechanical sound, or runs alongside overheating. Check the manufacturer’s diagnostics and support instructions for your exact make and model. Fan assemblies, thermal profiles, and safe repair steps vary. HP cautions against continued use when a fan is not working correctly; follow the guidance for your own device rather than assuming the same repair procedure applies.
Without the make and model, it is not possible to give a reliable fan-control setting, compatible replacement part, or hardware diagnosis. Do not disable the fan: it is part of the laptop’s cooling system.
