Why Is My iPhone Hot After Installing iOS 27?

An iPhone can feel warm after a major iOS update while background tasks finish. Check for “Ongoing iOS Update,” and know what to do if a temperature warning appears.

Some warmth after installing a major iOS update is normal: update-related tasks can keep running in the background after the iPhone is ready to use. Apple says the phone should cool when those tasks finish. Check Settings > Battery for the “Ongoing iOS Update” insight; a temperature warning, however, means you should stop using the phone and let it cool.

Why an iPhone may get warm after an iOS update

Installing a major software update can leave background tasks running after setup is complete. Apple says these tasks may temporarily affect thermal performance and battery life. The update may not be the only source of warmth: Apple also lists initial setup, restoring a backup, wireless charging, demanding apps and high-quality video streaming as possible causes. A warm phone by itself does not prove there is an iOS 27 defect or a failing battery.

Apple’s guidance describes update-related warmth in general; it does not establish a specific iOS 27 overheating problem or give a fixed number of hours for warmth to last. For post-update battery drain, Apple advises waiting a few days and checking again. That guidance is not a guaranteed timetable for the phone to cool.

Check whether update tasks are still running

  1. Open Settings > Battery.
  2. Look for the “Ongoing iOS Update” insight, which indicates that update-related work is still finishing in the background.
  3. If the phone is only warm and no temperature warning appears, reduce demanding activity and give the work time to finish.

Apple says an iPhone can continue to be used while normal update-related activity finishes, provided it has not displayed a temperature warning. Its thermal guidance says the device should cool after the process or activity ends. Apple’s battery and performance guidance explains the background tasks, while Apple’s temperature guidance lists completing a major software update as a normal cause of warmth.

What to do if the iPhone is too warm to charge

Charging may slow or pause when the iPhone is outside a safe temperature range, then resume when its temperature returns to that range. If charging is on hold or the phone feels too warm, move it out of direct sunlight to a cooler place and lock the screen or let it sleep. Allow it to cool naturally; do not use extreme temperature changes to cool it. See Apple’s charging guidance and its iPhone thermal-charging guide.

What to do if a temperature warning appears

A temperature warning is different from ordinary warmth. Turn off the iPhone, move it somewhere cooler and away from direct sunlight, and leave it off while it cools. Apple describes dimming or a black display, weaker cellular signal, temporarily unavailable camera features, reduced performance, and charging pauses as possible thermal-protection responses. Follow the on-screen warning rather than continuing to use the phone.

Keep the iPhone within its temperature guidance

Apple says iPhone is designed to be used where the ambient temperature is 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F). These figures refer to the surrounding air, not the phone’s surface temperature. Apple gives 16°C to 22°C (62°F to 72°F) as an ideal ambient range for battery care and warns that use or charging above 35°C (95°F) can permanently reduce battery lifespan. Its stated storage range is −20°C to 45°C (−4°F to 113°F); that is for storage, not use. See Apple’s thermal guidance and its battery-care guidance.

When to check Battery Health or seek service

If battery life seems worse after the update, wait a few days before judging the change, as Apple recommends for update-related background work. Then check Settings > Battery > Battery Health (the exact label or location can vary by iPhone model and iOS version). A “Service” message is a separate battery-health signal: Apple says to consider battery replacement to restore performance and capacity. Warmth alone is not a reason to assume the battery needs service. Apple explains the Battery Health service indication.
