Apple does not publish a figure for how much battery the feature uses on its own, so the best way to judge its effect on your phone is to compare similar days with it on and off—and check Battery settings for other causes.
Does Always-On display drain battery?
It can use power: the display stays on to show a dimmed Lock Screen with items such as the time, date, notifications, and widgets. On supported iPhone models, the feature is on by default. Apple’s guide describes how it works and when it switches off automatically, but does not quantify its independent battery cost. The amount of time a phone works before recharging also depends on factors such as how it is used and which apps are running.

Always-On display automatically turns off when the iPhone is face down or obstructed from view, away from a paired Apple Watch, in a CarPlay session, using Continuity Camera, in Low Power Mode or Sleep Focus, or at the user’s usual bedtime. How can I check what is using my iPhone battery?
- Open Settings > Battery. Review battery suggestions and insights, daily battery use, and app activity. The labels and exact views can vary by iOS version. Apple’s guide to checking battery usage explains the available information.
- Look for patterns beyond the display. Check whether a particular app or recent activity stands out. A recent iOS update or device setup can trigger background work that temporarily affects battery life; Apple advises waiting a few days after an update before reassessing. Weak cellular coverage can also increase battery use, and Wi-Fi uses less power than cellular networking when available. Apple lists these and other checks in its battery-drain troubleshooting guidance.
- Compare similar days with Always-On display on and off. Note daily battery use for a few comparable days with the feature disabled. If you want, turn it back on and compare again. Keep your routine and other settings as similar as practical. This is a useful personal check, not a controlled test or a guarantee that every other factor is identical.
How do I turn off Always-On display or reduce what it shows?
Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display and switch off Always On Display. If you want the glanceable Lock Screen but fewer visible elements, leave it enabled and switch off Show Wallpaper and/or Show Notifications on the same page. These settings change what remains visible; Apple does not provide a separate battery-saving figure for either option.

What other settings can help with battery drain?
Adjust brightness and Auto-Lock
Apple identifies high screen brightness as energy-consuming and recommends enabling Auto-Brightness. Review Auto-Lock as well: a longer interval keeps the screen active for longer when you are using the phone. Apple’s battery performance guidance covers these settings.
Use a power mode when you need to conserve charge
Low Power Mode reduces power use and turns off Always-On display. Depending on your iPhone model and iOS version, the available power-mode settings may differ. Apple’s Low Power Mode instructions explain how to enable it, and its Power Modes guide describes mode availability and behavior.

Adaptive Power is available only on the models and software versions Apple lists. Where supported, it can adjust brightness, background activity, and performance to help conserve charge. Check Apple’s current battery-drain guidance for compatibility details.

If the drain continues after you have reviewed usage and settings, open Settings > Battery and inspect Battery Health; the menu name can vary by iPhone generation. If the phone shows Service, Apple says to consider battery replacement or follow the on-screen instructions. This is a reason to seek battery service rather than assume Always-On display is the only cause.
