Yellow lines on an HP printout can come from a low or clogged inkjet cartridge, misalignment, or a color LaserJet toner or print-path issue. The right fix depends on the printer technology and the pattern. Print the printer’s own quality page first, then use its yellow, cyan, magenta, and black areas to narrow the cause before buying supplies.
Start with a printer-generated quality page
Print a print-quality diagnostic page or status page using the printer’s control panel, HP Smart, or the software or manual for your exact model. Menu names and steps vary. Check the yellow block, but also inspect cyan, magenta, and black: a defect confined to yellow points toward that color’s supply or print path, while defects across several colors may involve another component. HP describes the diagnostic page as a way to identify print-quality problems and determine whether cleaning or alignment is appropriate (HP print-quality guidance).

Compare the page with the document that showed the problem. If the printer-generated page is clean but one file or application prints yellow marks, investigate that file or software path before replacing a cartridge. HP’s LaserJet troubleshooting guidance distinguishes a clean printer-generated page from a problem limited to the program used to print (HP Color LaserJet troubleshooting).
Identify the printer technology and the mark pattern
| What you see | Likely direction | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Inkjet diagnostic page has streaks or gaps in yellow | Yellow ink may be low or its nozzles may be clogged. | Use the model’s cleaning utility only if the diagnostic page supports it; inspect the result afterward. |
| Colors are displaced, or straight lines look jagged | Alignment may be off rather than ink simply missing. | Run the alignment utility for the model. |
| Color LaserJet page has dots or streaks in one color band | The corresponding toner cartridge may be responsible. | Follow the printer’s own diagnostic and cartridge-inspection instructions. |
| Defects appear across multiple color bands | A problem beyond a single color supply may be involved. | Use the model’s further troubleshooting steps; a cleaning page may be appropriate on applicable models. |
| Thin, evenly spaced yellow lines recur at a fixed interval | Some models have a documented model-specific cartridge issue. | Check whether that guidance applies to your exact model before acting on it. |
If your HP printer is an inkjet
For streaks or missing parts of the yellow block, clean selectively
If the quality page shows streaking or missing sections in the color blocks, run the automatic cartridge-cleaning utility available for your model, then print another diagnostic page. Cleaning consumes ink and shortens cartridge life, so do not repeat it unnecessarily or use it as the first response when the test page does not point to a print-path problem. HP specifically cautions against unnecessary cleaning (HP print-quality guidance).

A low cartridge or clogged nozzles can cause streaked color blocks. If the defect remains after the appropriate cleaning procedure, the affected cartridge may need replacement; confirm the exact supply for your model first.
For jagged lines or displaced colors, align rather than clean
When lines look jagged or colors appear out of position instead of simply missing or streaked, run the printer’s alignment utility. A newly installed cartridge may trigger an alignment page. Follow the printer’s prompts; some models require scanning that page to complete alignment. HP’s guide separates alignment from cleaning as a remedy for different visible patterns (HP alignment guidance).

If your HP printer is a color LaserJet
Do not apply inkjet cleaning or alignment advice to a LaserJet. On the Color LaserJet Pro MFP M176n/M177fw, HP’s troubleshooting page groups marks into yellow, cyan, black, and magenta bands. Dots or streaks in only one group point toward its corresponding toner cartridge; marks across several groups call for further diagnosis, and HP recommends a cleaning page for certain multi-band patterns (HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M176n/M177fw guidance).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor that page’s cartridge inspection procedure, check that sealing tape was removed and look for visible damage. Do not touch the toner cartridge roller: fingerprints can create print-quality problems. Follow the procedure only if it applies to your model; other LaserJets may use different steps.

A fixed repeating yellow line is a narrow, model-specific case
HP documents thin horizontal yellow lines repeating every 1.3 inches (32 mm) on the CP4025/CP4525 Color LaserJet series. The older model-specific guidance says this may happen shortly after a new yellow cartridge is installed, possibly because of storage conditions or cartridge contamination. For those models, HP suggests restarting and checking again after 24–48 hours; if the issue persists, replace the yellow cartridge, and contact HP if replacement does not solve it (HP CP4025/CP4525 guidance). This interval and procedure should not be treated as general advice for other HP printers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a replacement only after confirming the supply
Yellow ink is relevant to compatible inkjet models; yellow toner applies to the relevant color LaserJets. Because HP supply numbers differ by printer, identify the full model and check HP Smart’s Supported Supplies or Supply Status, the printer’s installation label, or its manual before ordering. Avoid replacing every cartridge when the diagnostic page isolates one color, and do not assume a cartridge is responsible when multiple color bands are affected. HP’s guidance explains how to find the supported supply and cautions against touching inkjet cartridge electrical contacts or print nozzles (HP cartridge and supply guidance).

HP Instant Ink is an optional replenishment service for some models and regions. It can track levels and order cartridges for eligible enrolled customers, but it does not diagnose or fix yellow lines. Check local and model eligibility with HP rather than treating the service as a troubleshooting step.

Contact HP if the printer-generated page still shows defects after the applicable cleaning, alignment, or model-approved supply steps, or if the pattern spans multiple color bands and the model’s instructions do not resolve it. Keep the diagnostic page and note whether the marks are yellow-only, multicolor, jagged, or evenly repeated; those details help identify the relevant troubleshooting path. HP advises contacting support when print-quality problems persist (HP support guidance).
