If your HDMI adapter shows “No signal,” gives a lower-than-expected resolution, or works for the desktop but not a streaming app, start by checking whether the source device can output video through the port you’re using. Then verify the adapter and cable support the display mode, reseat the connections, select the correct HDMI input and computer display mode, and check power or HDCP requirements where relevant. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee video output.
Why an HDMI adapter may not work
The failure can be anywhere along the video path: the source device or port, the adapter, the HDMI cable, the display, or a setting or content-protection requirement. The right checks depend on the adapter’s direction and both endpoints. A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, for example, is not interchangeable with an HDMI-to-VGA converter or a wireless display adapter.

- No picture: the source port may not support video, a connection may be loose, the display may be on another HDMI input, or the computer may not be sending output to it.
- Picture at a lower resolution or refresh rate: one part of the chain may not support the selected display mode.
- Desktop works, but a film or show does not: protected playback may require HDCP support or an app-compatible connection.
- Picture works, but audio stays on the source: the operating system may still be routing sound to its built-in speakers.
These checks help isolate the cause; they do not establish that a particular adapter is defective.
Check that the source device can send video from this port
For a USB-C-to-HDMI connection, look up the exact source-device model and the specific USB-C port. USB-C describes the connector, not a promise that the port carries video. The port and the rest of the connection must support the relevant display technology or Alternate Mode. Microsoft advises checking that the PC, display, and cable support the required mode and using the correct port: Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance.

For diagnosis, connect the adapter directly to the video-capable source port rather than through a hub or dock. An intervening device or several attached Alternate Mode devices can complicate the connection. If you are using a different adapter type, check its manufacturer’s instructions for the source and direction it supports; adapters that convert between different video formats are not automatically interchangeable.
Reseat the connections and verify the display input
- Turn on the display and confirm that it is set to the HDMI input where the cable is connected.
- Disconnect and firmly reconnect the adapter at the source, then reseat the HDMI cable at both ends.
- For troubleshooting, remove extension cables, hubs, docks, splitters, and other converters from the path. Connect the source, adapter, and display as directly as the setup allows.
- If possible, try a known-working HDMI cable or test the current cable with equipment that is known to work. This can help distinguish a cable problem from an adapter or source-port problem.

Choose the right external-display mode in Windows
A connected monitor may remain blank if Windows is not set to show output the way you expect. Press Windows key + P, then select Extend to use the external display as an additional desktop, or Duplicate to show the same desktop on both screens. Microsoft provides these steps in its external-monitor troubleshooting guide.
If you are trying to connect multiple external displays, check the source computer’s graphics limits. An HDMI splitter duplicates one signal; it does not create independent desktops or additional independent displays.

What to check when resolution or refresh rate is too low
Video output depends on the capabilities of the source, adapter, cable, and display together. If the display works at a lower setting but goes dark or drops to a lower resolution or refresh rate at the intended setting, check the specifications of every part of that chain for the requested mode. Apple notes that a cable or adapter that does not support the display’s resolution and refresh rate can result in a dark display or reduced settings: Apple’s external-display guidance.
- Temporarily select a lower resolution or refresh rate. If the picture returns, a mode-capability mismatch is a possibility.
- Check the source device, adapter, HDMI cable, and display specifications for support of the mode you want.
- Only then consider replacing a component. Match the replacement to the source port and the display’s required resolution and refresh rate.
If only protected video or audio fails
Streaming video fails while the desktop appears
Some films, shows, and streaming apps require an HDCP-compatible connection and display. If the desktop is visible but protected video is not, check HDCP support across the connection and whether the app supports the adapter you are using. Picture appears but audio plays on the source device
Choose the external display or connected device as the audio output in the operating system’s sound settings. Microsoft includes this check for its Wireless Display Adapter in its wireless-adapter troubleshooting instructions.
Check power and updates for wireless display adapters
Some wireless display adapters connect to the TV’s HDMI input for video and also need a separate USB power connection. This is product-specific: do not assume that every passive HDMI adapter needs external power.

For Microsoft’s Wireless Display Adapter, check that HDMI is connected to the intended TV input and that USB power is connected as directed. Choosing a replacement adapter only after diagnosis
A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter is a suitable category only when the source device’s exact USB-C port can output video. Apple documents its USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter for supported Mac computers and Thunderbolt- or USB-C-equipped iPad models; check current device and product compatibility before choosing one: Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter information. Microsoft’s guidance likewise makes host, port, and connection compatibility essential: USB-C troubleshooting in Windows.
Before buying an adapter or cable, verify:
- the exact source model and whether the port you plan to use outputs video;
- the resolution and refresh rate supported by the source, adapter, cable, and display as a complete chain;
- that the adapter supports the connection direction and connector types you need;
- whether the product requires separate power or supports pass-through charging, if that matters to your setup;
- HDCP support if protected streaming is part of your use case; and
- whether direct connection works before adding a hub or dock.
An HDMI cable is a reasonable replacement to consider if testing points to cable failure or inadequate support for the required display mode. Neither an adapter label nor a USB-C plug alone establishes compatibility with every device.
