When Chrome shows “Paused” and asks you to sign in again, it usually means Chrome Sync is waiting for you to verify your identity. Google’s Chrome help page says Chrome pauses Sync when you sign out of a Google service such as Gmail, and signing in again through Chrome’s prompt resumes it. If the pause comes back every time Chrome closes or restarts, the setting to check is whether Chrome may save site data on your device.
What “Paused” usually refers to
The wording in the title is easy to misread. In the Google Chrome Community reports reviewed for this article, users describe seeing “sync is paused” or Chrome “always Paused,” and the message sits in Chrome’s sync and sign-in area rather than describing a suspended Google Account. The phrase alone does not prove that your account has been restricted. It does tell you that Chrome has stopped syncing until you confirm who you are.

Those community threads are useful for matching what you see on screen. They are individual user reports, not an authoritative diagnosis, so treat them as examples rather than confirmed causes. One thread describes the pause recurring after closing the browser or restarting the PC, and another describes Chrome showing Paused on a laptop.
Signing in to Chrome is not the same as turning on Sync
Google separates two things that often get bundled together in Chrome’s settings. Google’s help article on how sign-in with your Google Account works in Chrome explains the distinction:
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
- Signing in to Chrome lets you save bookmarks, passwords, and other Chrome data to your Google Account.
- Sync is a separate switch. Tabs and history only sync when Sync is turned on in settings.
- Incognito limits what you can do: you can sign in to Google web services while using Incognito, but you cannot sign in to Chrome from an Incognito window.
This matters because a paused Sync can leave you signed in to some Google services and still not syncing Chrome data. A pause does not mean your Google web apps have logged you out.
How to resume a paused Sync
Google’s Chrome help article on fixing sync issues identifies signing out of a Google service as one cause of a pause, and gives the recovery step: verify your identity and sign in again. Follow these steps:
Rank #2
- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
- Open Chrome and look for the prompt that asks you to verify or sign in again. It is typically near the profile or sync indicator in the top-right corner of the window.
- Select the prompt and complete the sign-in for the Google Account you use with Chrome.
- Open Chrome’s Sync settings and confirm that Sync is on for the data types you want. A successful resume clears the Paused message.
If the prompt does not appear, open Chrome’s settings and check the sync and Google services section for a sign-in option. Exact labels can differ between Chrome versions, so match the wording to what your version shows.

If you sign in successfully but Sync pauses again the next time Chrome closes or restarts, Google’s current guidance points to on-device site data. Chrome needs permission to keep site data on the device for the sign-in state to persist across restarts. To check the setting:
Rank #3
- Intel Processor Up to 2.80GHz, 4GB DDR4, 128GB Storage
- 15" FHD IPS Display, Intel UHD Graphics
- 1x USB Type C, 1 x USB Type A, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack, HDMI
- Fast WiFi and Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam
- Chrome OS, AC Charger Included, Pastel Silver
- Open Chrome and select the three-dot menu at the top right, then select Settings.
- Go to Privacy and security, then Site Settings.
- Select Additional content settings, then On-device site data.
- Turn on Allow sites to save data on your device.
- Close Chrome completely, reopen it, and check whether Sync stays active.
Labels in this path may shift across Chrome versions, so if a name differs, look for the closest match under Site Settings.

| What you see | Most likely meaning | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Paused once, then clears after signing in | Sync was waiting for identity verification after a sign-out from a Google service | No further action beyond confirming Sync is on |
| Paused again after every close or restart | Chrome may not be allowed to keep site data on the device | Enable “Allow sites to save data on your device” and retest |
| Still paused after both steps | Not established by the official sources reviewed | Check whether you are still signed in to Chrome, and whether the browser is managed by an organization |
What the sources do not establish
The official Chrome help pages describe the sign-in, verification, and on-device data steps above. They do not confirm the causes that often appear in community discussions. Suggestions about profile corruption, antivirus software, extensions, or cookie exceptions show up in user threads as troubleshooting ideas, but the official guidance does not identify them as the cause of this pause, so they are not confirmed explanations.

Useful details to note before you go further are whether the pause follows restarts, whether you remain signed in to Chrome, and whether your browser is managed by a work or school organization.
