A speed test measures the entire path between one device and one test server, so the slowest or busiest link—your Wi‑Fi, computer, modem, router, provider network, test server or another user—sets the result. Start by testing a capable computer over Ethernet; that separates a broadband-line problem from a local wireless problem.
What your internet plan’s speed actually means
An internet plan describes the service your provider makes available at the connection to your home. The quoted figure may be a maximum, an expected service measure, or a rate subject to the provider’s terms. It is not an abstract speed that every phone, laptop and website must deliver at every moment.

A speed-test result is the throughput achieved from a particular device, through its network adapter, cable or Wi‑Fi link, router and modem, across the provider’s network and onward to a selected test server. Any section can limit the result. The test also captures conditions at that time: other household traffic, local wireless interference, provider congestion and the distance or capacity of the server.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Plan and test are not always like-for-like: check whether the plan rate is a maximum or an expected value, and whether the test displays megabits per second (Mbps), not megabytes per second (MB/s). Eight bits make one byte, so the numerical values differ.
- The test endpoint matters: a nearby, lightly loaded server can produce a different result from a distant or busy server.
- One test is a snapshot: repeated results under comparable conditions are more useful than a single unusually high or low reading.
First, identify where the slowdown is
The most useful comparison is a capable wired test versus a Wi‑Fi test from the same home and, as far as practical, the same time. A large wired-to-Wi‑Fi gap points to wireless coverage, interference, the client device or router. Similarly low results on a properly connected wired computer point toward the modem, service, provider network, test conditions or congestion.

| Result pattern | Most likely area | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Wired result near the subscribed service; Wi‑Fi much lower | Wireless coverage, band, interference, router or client capability | Test beside the router, compare bands and inspect obstacles and other traffic |
| Wired and Wi‑Fi results both low on several tests | Modem, router port, computer link, provider service, congestion or test server | Verify link capability, repeat at different times and contact the provider if it persists |
| Only one device is slow | That device’s adapter, software, location or hardware | Test another capable device under the same conditions |
| Results swing widely between tests | Congestion, server choice, changing household use or unstable wireless conditions | Record server, time and connection type; compare like with like |
Run a controlled speed test
Before changing equipment, make the measurement meaningful. The following sequence follows consumer guidance from the FCC, Google’s Nest/Wifi support, Ofcom and TP-Link.
- Confirm the subscribed service. Check the provider account or bill for the download rate, any distinction between maximum and expected performance, and whether your service includes a provider-managed modem or router.
- Pause competing traffic. Stop cloud backups, game downloads, video streams and large uploads on every household device. A shared connection divides its available capacity among active users.
- Use one capable computer. Close unnecessary network-heavy applications and note the computer, connection type and time. If possible, use a computer with a network adapter and operating system able to process the plan’s rate.
- Run more than one test. Use the same test service for comparable readings, then try another reputable server if the result seems anomalous. Record the displayed rate, server location and time; server distance and load can change the outcome.
- Repeat at another time. Comparing a quiet period with a busy evening can reveal local or provider congestion. Keep the device and test method the same.
- Compare with a router or provider test. Some routers and provider apps test from the gateway to the home. That measurement excludes the final Wi‑Fi hop, so it answers a different question from a device test.
Make the wired test valid
Ethernet is generally faster and more consistent than Wi‑Fi, but only when every link can carry the expected rate. Connect the computer directly to the modem when your network arrangement and provider permit that safe test; otherwise connect it to the router’s appropriate Ethernet port. Follow the provider’s instructions if the modem requires a particular port or authentication step.
- Check the negotiated link speed in the computer’s network settings. An older 100 Mbps adapter, cable or port can cap a service that is faster than 100 Mbps.
- Use a modern cable, such as a Cat 6 Ethernet cable, when you need to verify a high-speed connection. The cable enables a valid diagnosis; it does not increase the speed delivered by the provider.
- Match the computer’s Ethernet adapter to the router or modem port. A Gigabit-capable computer connected to a Gigabit port is appropriate for testing services above 100 Mbps.
- Disconnect Wi‑Fi on the test computer so it cannot silently use the wireless path.
If the wired result is healthy while Wi‑Fi is poor, replacing the Ethernet cable will not fix the wireless issue. If the wired result remains low after link capability is verified, the evidence is stronger for a service, modem, router, provider-network or congestion problem.

Why Wi‑Fi is often slower than the plan
Distance and obstacles
Radio strength falls with distance and is weakened by walls, floors, furniture and appliances. A test beside the router can be substantially different from one in a bedroom or at the edge of the property. Ofcom notes that a slow Wi‑Fi result does not by itself prove a fault in the broadband line.
Choosing 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz
The 2.4 GHz band generally reaches farther and penetrates obstacles better, while 5 GHz can process data more quickly at shorter range. The best band depends on the device’s capabilities, distance and interference. A phone on a crowded 2.4 GHz network may be slower than a nearby laptop on 5 GHz even though both use the same plan.
Interference and neighboring networks
Nearby Wi‑Fi networks and other radio devices compete for airtime. Congestion is especially noticeable in apartments and dense neighborhoods. Changing location, band or channel settings according to the router’s guidance can help, but measure the result rather than assuming a particular setting is faster.

Router and client limits
The router must be capable of delivering the subscribed rate, and the client device must support the relevant Wi‑Fi generation, channel width and processing load. A new plan cannot make an old adapter or entry-level router transmit beyond its hardware limits. Other active devices also share the wireless airtime and the broadband connection.

Router placement and basic recovery
Place the router as centrally and openly as your home layout allows, rather than inside a cabinet or behind large obstructions. Restart it once as a basic troubleshooting step, then retest. A restart can clear a temporary fault; it cannot overcome a persistent hardware or service limitation.
Check congestion on the home network and provider network
There are two different kinds of congestion. Home congestion occurs when several devices use the connection or wireless airtime at once. Provider-network congestion occurs upstream, often varying by time or route. A test that is low only during busy periods suggests time-dependent congestion, but it does not identify which network segment is responsible.

Use the same wired computer and server at several times, while recording whether other devices are active. If both a router-side test and a wired device test fall together, the limitation may be before the Wi‑Fi link. If the router-side result is healthy but the device result is low, focus on the computer, cable, Ethernet port or wireless path.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a router replacement is justified
Do not replace a router solely because one Wi‑Fi test is slow. First establish that the provider connection is performing well over Ethernet and that the wireless result is consistently poor in the locations that matter. Then compare the router’s specifications with the plan and your client devices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Consider replacement when the router’s Ethernet or Wi‑Fi capabilities are below the subscribed rate, it cannot support the required band or standard, or its coverage is inadequate for the home.
- Match the replacement to the plan’s speed, the capabilities of phones and computers, the home’s size and construction, and the provider’s modem or authentication requirements.
- Keep the existing router if wired performance is low; a newer Wi‑Fi radio will not repair a provider-side or modem-side bottleneck.
Manufacturer specifications describe capability under stated conditions, not a guaranteed speed in every room. Validate any change with the same controlled wired and Wi‑Fi tests.

When to contact your internet provider
Contact the provider after several comparable wired tests remain materially below the service’s stated performance, especially when another capable computer and cable produce the same result. Ask the provider to check for an outage, service disruption, line or modem diagnostics, and any required troubleshooting steps.
Have these details ready:
- Plan name or subscribed download rate and whether the provider describes it as maximum or expected.
- Test dates and times, displayed rates, selected servers and whether each test was wired or Wi‑Fi.
- Computer, Ethernet adapter, cable and router/modem ports used for the wired test.
- Whether other household traffic was paused and whether restarting the router changed anything.
A provider may ask you to connect directly to the modem, use a particular Ethernet port or run its own test. Follow those instructions; they are designed to isolate the provider’s portion of the path.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes that produce misleading results
- Testing over weak Wi‑Fi and blaming the line: repeat the measurement over Ethernet before concluding that broadband service is slow.
- Comparing unlike tests: changing devices, servers, locations and times at once makes the numbers impossible to interpret.
- Ignoring a 100 Mbps link: an older adapter, cable or port can impose a hard ceiling on a faster service.
- Leaving downloads running: backups, updates and streaming consume capacity and airtime.
- Confusing Mbps with MB/s: the units describe different quantities; check the test’s unit before comparing it with the plan.
- Assuming the router’s maximum is your device’s speed: advertised wireless capability depends on compatible clients, signal conditions and shared airtime.
- Replacing hardware too early: establish the wired-versus-Wi‑Fi pattern and verify specifications before spending money.
A concise decision path
- Confirm the plan rate and its qualification as maximum or expected service.
- Pause other traffic and run repeated tests from one capable computer.
- Run the same tests over Ethernet with a suitable adapter, cable and port.
- If wired is good, test near the router, then in the problem location; compare 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz where available.
- Inspect distance, walls, interference, router capability, client capability and active devices before considering replacement.
- If capable wired results stay low, repeat at different times, compare a router/provider test if available, restart the router once and contact the provider about outages or service troubleshooting.
