1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA computer fan that is not spinning may be working as designed, especially if it is temperature-controlled, or it may be blocked, disconnected, misconfigured, or failed. First identify which fan has stopped and check whether that exact device normally allows it to stop at low temperatures. If you see an overheating warning, crashes, throttling, or shutdowns, stop using the computer while you diagnose it.
Why is my computer fan not spinning?
The cause depends on the device and the fan. Some laptop and graphics-card fans stop when temperatures are low; a stopped fan alone does not establish a fault. Other common causes include dust or debris, a cable touching a blade, a loose fan lead, connection to the wrong motherboard header, fan-control settings, or a failed motor or bearing. Check the manual or support page for the exact computer or component because fan-stop behavior and diagnostics vary by model. ASUS notes that some devices start their fans only after reaching a model-specific temperature threshold.

When should I stop using the computer?
If the computer reports a fan fault or overheating, or is crashing, rebooting, throttling, or shutting down unexpectedly, turn it off and stop using it while you investigate. A stopped processor-cooler fan can allow the CPU to overheat quickly. HP advises against continuing to use a computer when its fan is not working correctly. HP’s fan troubleshooting guidance and Intel’s list of possible fan-failure symptoms include heat and system instability; these symptoms can have other causes, so none alone proves the fan has failed.

Identify which fan is stopped
Determine whether the fan is in a laptop, desktop case, CPU cooler, graphics card, or power supply. These have different designs and repair paths. For a laptop or graphics card, check the exact model’s documentation for expected idle fan behavior before treating a stopped fan as defective.

Shut down and disconnect power
For a desktop, shut it down and unplug it before opening the case or moving cables. For a laptop or other device, follow the maker’s shutdown and service instructions. Never reach into a powered computer to clear a fan or move a wire.
-
Inspect accessible vents, blades, and cables
Look for blocked vents, dust or hair buildup, debris, or a wire touching a blade. On a desktop, check whether the fan lead is firmly connected to the appropriate documented motherboard header. Intel recommends checking the fan connection and dust; AMD advises confirming that a cooler fan is connected to the correct header. Intel troubleshooting steps and AMD cooler guidance cover these checks.

-
Remove dust conservatively
If dust is obstructing an accessible fan or vent, clean only with the device powered off and disconnected, following the manufacturer’s instructions. ASUS recommends using a commercially available compressed-air can at a distance, and says not to invert the can. Avoid powerful air compressors, which can damage fan blades. Cleaning may clear an obstruction, but it cannot repair a failed motor or bearing. See ASUS’s cleaning cautions.

Desktop checks: fan headers and control settings
After the physical checks, a custom desktop may need a connection or configuration check. Consult the motherboard manual before changing connections or fan-control options; do not move a CPU cooler fan to an arbitrary header.

- 【High Performance Cooling Fan】 Automatic speed control of the motherboard through the 4PIN PWM fan cable interface, which can determine the speed according to the temperature of the motherboard, with a maximum speed of 1550RPM. Configured with up to 55cm of cable for PWM series control of fans, ideal for cases and CPU coolers.
- 【Quality Bearings】The carefully developed quality S-FDB bearings solve the problem of pc cooling fan blade shaking in lifting mode, keeping fan noise to a minimum while providing maximum cooling performance when needed and extending the life of the fan.
- [Excellent LED light] The high-brightness LED atomizing argb fan blade can effectively reflect the light, making the ARGB lighting effect softer, and it matches the cooler and case more perfectly. Up to 17 modes of light effects with ARGB support, color can be managed and synchronized through the port on motherboard.
- 【Silent Fan Size】 Model: TL-C12C-S X5, Size: 120*120*25mm, Speed: 1550RPM±10%, Noise ≤ 25.6dBA Connector: 4pin pwm, Current: 0.20A, Air Pressure: 1.53mm H2O, Air Flow: 66.17CFM, Higher air flow for improved cooling performance.
- 【Perfect Match】The PC fan can be used not only as a case fan, but is also suitable for use with a cpu cooler to create a cooling effect together, which can take away the dry heat from the case and the high temperature generated by the CPU in operation, allowing for maximum cooling; Ideal for cases, radiators and CPU coolers.
- Confirm the fan is connected to the intended CPU_FAN, chassis/system fan, or other documented header.
- Check BIOS fan-control settings and any relevant software profile. A setting or profile can affect whether and how a fan runs.
- If the manual permits it, test the fan on a suitable alternate header, or test a known-working compatible fan on the original header. These checks can help distinguish a fan fault from a header problem.
ASUS and AMD describe checking fan-control configuration and the correct header as part of desktop cooling diagnosis. ASUS motherboard fan troubleshooting and AMD’s cooler guidance provide further steps. For an OEM computer, use its model-specific diagnostics and support instructions rather than applying generic BIOS changes; diagnostic options differ by device.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should I replace the fan or get service?
Consider replacement only after checking for obstruction, connection, and settings problems and establishing that the fan has failed. A desktop case fan or replaceable cooler fan may be serviceable, but compatibility is specific to the case, cooler, motherboard header, or controller.

| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Device or component model and mounting dimensions | Confirms the fan fits the case, cooler, or exact device. |
| Connector and speed-control type | Confirms the motherboard header or controller supports the fan’s connection and control method. |
| Likely cause | Dust, an obstruction, a loose lead, or a setting may not require a replacement; a confirmed mechanical or electrical failure may. |
| Repair path | A desktop case or cooler fan may be replaceable; a laptop, graphics card, or proprietary assembly may require the maker’s procedure or qualified service. |
Do not open a power supply to replace its internal fan. HP warns of fire and electric-shock risk. For laptop, graphics-card, and proprietary OEM fans, use the manufacturer’s service procedure or a qualified repair service. HP’s fan guidance explains the power-supply hazard.
