An ASUS laptop can feel slow because its storage is nearly full, it uses a hard drive instead of an SSD, memory or CPU capacity is strained, too many apps run in the background, or software is outdated or malicious. First identify the bottleneck in Windows Task Manager; then try software fixes before buying parts. ASUS says hardware specifications such as CPU frequency, insufficient memory, or using an HDD instead of an SSD can contribute to slow performance. Its troubleshooting article was updated March 20, 2026 (ASUS support).
Find out what is making the laptop slow
Start by checking resource use while the slowdown is happening. A laptop that is sluggish only during startup may have too many startup programs; one that remains slow during everyday use may be limited by memory, storage, CPU, or a background process.
- Open Task Manager: Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. In Processes, look for apps using unusually high CPU, memory, or disk resources. Select Performance to see whether one resource stays heavily occupied while the laptop is slow.
- Check startup load: In Task Manager, open Startup apps and note nonessential apps marked as high impact. Disable only apps you recognize and do not need at sign-in; avoid disabling security or hardware utilities without understanding their purpose.
- Check storage: Go to Settings > System > Storage. A nearly full system drive can affect responsiveness and leave little room for updates or temporary files.
- Test without peripherals: Disconnect external drives, printers, dongles, memory cards, and other accessories, then check whether performance improves. ASUS includes peripheral removal in its troubleshooting sequence.
- Scan for malware: Run a scan in Windows Security. ASUS cautions that free software can be bundled with malware, and Microsoft also recommends scanning when a device runs slowly.
- Run ASUS diagnostics if available: Open MyASUS > System Diagnosis. Availability and menu names vary by model and region; ASUS lists slow system performance, driver errors, unresponsiveness, and slow boot among the scenarios it addresses.
Look for patterns rather than a single momentary spike: sustained high usage by one process points toward a different fix than a resource that remains heavily loaded across ordinary tasks.
Try software fixes before replacing hardware
Update Windows and ASUS software
Install available Windows updates and model-appropriate ASUS driver and BIOS updates. Use the support information for the exact laptop model; BIOS options and update procedures differ, so do not install a BIOS intended for another ASUS model. If the laptop is still on Windows 10, factor in that Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, when planning updates or migration.

Free space and remove unnecessary software
Uninstall apps you no longer use and remove files you no longer need. Windows Storage Sense can help manage temporary and other removable files where available. Before deleting files, confirm they are not needed and keep a separate backup of anything important.
Reduce startup and background activity
Disable nonessential startup apps in Task Manager and close programs you are not using. If the slowdown began after installing an app or utility, test whether that software is responsible rather than removing multiple programs at random.

Use a clean boot to isolate a conflict
A clean boot starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. If the problem disappears in that environment, Microsoft recommends systematically turning startup apps or services back on and restarting to identify the conflict. Change one group at a time, and keep track of what you re-enable so you can undo the test.
Adjust power and visual settings
For a performance test or demanding work while plugged in, open Settings > System > Power & battery and select Best performance under Power mode, if the option is available. Microsoft warns that this setting uses more power, drains the battery faster, and may make the laptop warmer. If the laptop remains sluggish, reducing unnecessary Windows visual effects may help responsiveness, though it will not fix a hardware bottleneck.

Optimize the drive appropriately
Use Windows Optimize Drives as appropriate for the drive type and Windows configuration. Drive optimization is not a substitute for replacing a failing disk, and defragmentation is not a remedy for a hardware fault.
Why an ASUS laptop may suddenly slow down or boot slowly
A noticeable change can follow a software update, newly installed program, increase in startup activity, malware infection, or a drive running short on free space. A slow boot can also result from background programs or a problematic disk. Use Task Manager and the checks above to find a change that matches when the symptoms began; do not assume that a sudden slowdown automatically means the laptop needs more RAM.

If the problem vanishes after a clean boot, investigate startup apps and services. If it persists with peripherals disconnected and resource use remains high, consider storage, memory, CPU limits, or a hardware issue. Back up important files before a reset, drive replacement, or other invasive repair.

Hardware upgrades make sense only when the diagnostics point to the component and the exact ASUS model supports the change. The expected result depends on the bottleneck: a faster drive will not solve a CPU limit, thermal throttling, malware, or a software conflict.

| Option | Consider it when | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| SSD | The laptop still uses an HDD, storage is the bottleneck, or diagnostics suggest a slow or failing drive. | Confirm the supported interface and form factor—such as M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, or 2.5-inch SATA—plus thickness, capacity limits, and installation requirements in the exact model’s service manual. |
| RAM | Memory use is consistently saturated during the tasks that feel slow. | Check the model’s maximum capacity, memory generation and module type, and whether memory is upgradeable. Some thin ASUS laptops have soldered memory. |
Compare an upgrade with continued software troubleshooting by the measured bottleneck, expected impact, compatibility, cost, data-loss risk, and—when changing power settings—heat and battery trade-offs. Back up files before opening the laptop or replacing a drive. If you cannot confirm compatibility or are not comfortable with installation, use qualified repair support.
When to contact ASUS support or a repair professional
Seek help if MyASUS reports a fault, the system remains unresponsive after software checks, a drive appears to be failing, or performance problems persist despite isolating startup software. A drive suspected of failure deserves attention before repeated resets or other actions that could complicate data recovery. Use ASUS support for guidance tied to the exact model, or consult a qualified repair professional for hardware diagnosis.
