Your phone can report full storage after you delete visible files because deleted items may sit in a Trash area, offline downloads may stay inside the apps that saved them, and cache or app data can keep taking space. Start with Settings > Storage to see which category is actually using the space, then work through the checks below in order.
Why deleted files don’t always free space
“Everything” usually means the photos, videos, and documents you can see in your gallery or file manager. Android storage holds more than that. It also includes app data, downloads that an app manages on its own, cached temporary files, and sometimes items that were moved to a Trash folder rather than erased. Each of these can keep the storage bar high even when your visible files are gone.

Check what is using the space
Before you delete anything else, find out which category is taking the room. Google’s Android Help article “Free up storage on your Android device” describes this as the first step. Menu names and steps vary by manufacturer and Android version, so the labels on your phone may differ from the ones below.
- Open Settings > Storage.
- Read the category breakdown, such as images, videos, audio, apps, and other files.
- Select the largest category, or browse it, to see which files or apps are using the space.
On Google Pixel phones, Google documents Settings > Storage > Free up space > Browse as a way to see more of the files using space. This path is documented for Pixel; treat it as a starting point on other devices rather than a guaranteed route. Google’s general guidance notes that some steps require Android 14 or later, and its Pixel guidance notes some steps require Android 11 or later.

Look in Trash or Recently deleted
If you deleted files from a gallery, file manager, or media app, the files may not have been erased at that moment. Google’s cleanup instructions include a “Move files to Trash” action, which means the selected files can still occupy storage until they are removed from the Trash.
Open the app you used to delete the files and look for a Trash or Recently deleted section. The location and how long items stay there depend on the app and the device. Google’s official material reviewed for this article does not establish one universal retention period, so do not assume the files will disappear automatically after a fixed number of days.

Find offline downloads inside their source apps
Downloaded content often lives inside the app that saved it, not in your photo gallery. Google’s guidance says to remove downloaded content in the app that downloaded it. Its examples include Google TV and YouTube Music, each with its own removal path.

Cache versus app data
Android apps keep two kinds of files in their app-specific storage. Persistent files are things the app needs to keep working, such as saved settings or local databases. Cache files are temporary copies that the app can rebuild. Android’s developer documentation, “Access app-specific files,” says the system may remove cache files on its own when internal storage runs low. The same page warns against relying on that, so cache is worth checking if an app is large.
The two cleanup options are not equivalent. Read the table before you tap either one.

| Action | What it removes | Can it be undone? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delete files in a gallery or file manager | The selected files | Only if the app keeps them in Trash or Recently deleted | Retention period not established across all devices and apps |
| Remove downloaded content in the source app | Offline copies saved by that app | Not stated in the official guidance reviewed | Use the app’s own Downloads or Offline controls |
| Clear cache | Temporary data | Not stated; the app may load more slowly the next time it opens | Google describes this as deleting temporary data |
| Clear storage | All data for that app | No. Google’s help text says it “Permanently deletes all app data.” | Can remove local content, settings, and sign-ins |
| Copy to a computer, then delete the phone copies | Only the phone copies you choose | Yes, if the computer copy is intact | Needs a USB cable and a compatible computer connection |
Clear cache safely, and avoid clearing storage by default
Clear cache first when an app is large but you have not cleared it before. To do so, open Settings > Apps, select the app, then choose Storage & cache (the label varies by phone), and tap Clear cache.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsClear storage only when you understand what the app holds. For messaging, authenticator, banking, and game apps, check for an in-app backup, a sync option, or a recovery method first. Clearing storage can remove local messages, offline progress, settings, and signed-in sessions. Google’s help text is direct on this point: “Clear storage: Permanently deletes all app data.”

Keep files you want by moving them to a computer first
If the space is taken by files you want to keep, Google’s guidance describes copying them to a computer with a USB cable and then deleting the copies on the phone. Confirm the files open on the computer before you delete anything from the phone. Cable connector and data-transfer support depend on both devices. This method only reduces the files on the phone; it does not clear app data or Trash.
What is not established
- Refresh timing: The official sources reviewed do not say how quickly the storage display updates after a deletion. If the number has not changed, restart the phone or wait a few minutes before concluding nothing was freed.
- Amount recovered: No typical recovery amount is established. The result depends on what the phone was holding.
- Storage versus memory: Storage is where music, photos, and apps live. Memory (RAM) is where running programs work. Clearing RAM does not free storage, and a full storage bar is not caused by RAM use.
If none of these checks explains the space, the next step is to look at the largest category in Settings > Storage again and follow its specific controls. The exact cause on your handset remains unknown until you have seen that breakdown.
Recommended order
- Open Settings > Storage and identify the largest category.
- Check Trash or Recently deleted in the app you used to delete files.
- Remove offline downloads inside the apps that saved them.
- Clear cache for large apps, one app at a time.
- Move any files you want to keep to a computer before deleting the phone copies.
- Clear app storage only after checking what the app holds and whether it can restore that data.
Work through the list in this order so each step narrows the cause before you remove anything else.
