Microlink returns HTTP 429 with error code ERATE when a request exceeds the limit that applies to the endpoint and plan. Check the response body and the x-rate-limit-limit, x-rate-limit-remaining, and x-rate-limit-reset headers. If the allowance is exhausted, wait until the reported reset or use an eligible Pro key with the Pro endpoint.
What a Microlink 429 means
A 429 is Microlink telling the caller that it has gone past the applicable request limit; Microlink identifies the accompanying error code as ERATE. Its current API overview describes the free plan as allowing 25 requests per day. That figure applies to the free plan, not necessarily to a Pro account or every endpoint. Microlink API overview
A screenshot request uses Microlink’s screenshot parameter, but requesting a screenshot does not make the rate limit a separate kind of error. The response’s body and rate-limit headers are the useful evidence for diagnosing the specific request. Screenshot parameter documentation
How to diagnose the specific request
- Read the status and error body. Confirm that the response is HTTP 429 and check whether its error code is
ERATE. This indicates the request exceeded the applicable limit. - Inspect the rate-limit headers. Read
x-rate-limit-limitfor the limit,x-rate-limit-remainingfor remaining allowance, andx-rate-limit-resetfor reset timing. Microlink documents the reset value as UTC epoch seconds. Use the value returned with the request you are debugging rather than assuming a fixed reset time. Microlink API overview - Check which endpoint your request uses. Microlink distinguishes the free endpoint,
api.microlink.io, from the Pro endpoint,pro.microlink.io. A Pro token belongs in thex-api-keyrequest header sent to the Pro endpoint. - Compare the response with your plan. If you are using the free endpoint, the current overview lists 25 requests per day. Do not assume that a Pro key or a larger allowance applies to a request sent to the free endpoint.
What to do after confirming a limit
Wait for the reset
If the workload can pause, stop retrying and wait until the UTC time represented by x-rate-limit-reset. Repeated requests before the allowance resets do not resolve an exhausted quota.

Use the Pro endpoint and key if you need higher quota
Microlink says Pro offers higher quota. Configure the request for pro.microlink.io and send the Pro token in the x-api-key header. The documented endpoint distinction matters: sending a Pro key to the free endpoint is not the documented Pro setup. Microlink API overview
Speed up screenshot-only calls without mistaking it for a quota fix
When you only need the screenshot, Microlink’s screenshot guide says setting meta: false skips metadata extraction and is usually the biggest speedup. It can make a screenshot-only request more efficient, but Microlink does not describe this setting as increasing quota or bypassing an exhausted limit. Microlink screenshot guide

Check how Microlink delivers the screenshot
Microlink’s normal JSON response includes screenshot metadata and an asset URL; the screenshot asset is delivered through a CDN URL. For contexts that need the image itself—such as HTML, CSS, Markdown, or social tags—the delivery guide documents embed: 'screenshot.url' to serve the image directly. These are response-format choices, not remedies for HTTP 429. Screenshot parameter documentation Delivery guide
Troubleshooting common cases
- 429 with
ERATEand no remaining allowance: Wait for the reported reset, or switch to an eligible Pro setup if you need higher quota. - You believe you have Pro but still hit the free limit: Verify the hostname is
pro.microlink.ioand that the Pro token is in thex-api-keyheader. The Pro key is documented for the Pro endpoint, not the free endpoint. - You do not know whether the quota is exhausted: The available documentation describes general rate-limit behavior, not the state of any particular account or request. Inspect that request’s body, endpoint, plan configuration, and three rate-limit headers before attributing the 429 to a specific cause.
- The call is slow, but not over quota: For a screenshot-only call, consider
meta: falseto skip metadata extraction. This is a performance option, not a way to clear a 429.
