First identify where the problem occurs: Google Search voice input in Chrome, the Google app or Assistant on Android, a Google site in a browser, or Google Meet. The checks overlap, but each feature has its own microphone permission. Start with mute, input selection, and permissions; then use a test in another app to narrow down whether the issue is with Google or the device.
Start with the checks that apply to any Google feature
- Check mute and the connection. Turn off any physical mute switch on the microphone or headset, and check that the Google app or Meet meeting does not show you as muted. For Bluetooth audio, confirm the device is powered on and connected to the computer or phone you are using.
- Confirm the input device. A working microphone can still go unnoticed if Google or Chrome is listening to a different input. Choose the intended microphone in Chrome or Meet, and confirm that the computer or phone is using the right input device.
- Check permissions at each level. A Google site may need permission in the browser, while the browser itself needs permission in the operating system. On Android, app access and a website’s Chrome access are separate settings.
- Test the microphone in another app. If another app can record audio, focus on the Google feature’s permission, browser, or input selection. If no app can record, check system access, the selected input, mute switch, connection, and microphone hardware.
Google’s guidance for Meet on a computer says microphone access must be provided to “Google Meet, Your browser, Your device.” The same layered-permission idea helps explain why granting access in just one place may not be enough.

Fix microphone access in desktop Chrome
For Google Search voice input or another Google site in Chrome, check both the site’s permission and Chrome’s microphone settings. Google’s Chrome microphone troubleshooting guidance explains how to allow or block site access and select a default microphone.
- Open the Google site where the microphone fails and use the site information or settings control in Chrome’s address bar to review its microphone permission. Allow access for that site if it is blocked.
- Open Chrome’s site settings and review the microphone permission. Remove a block for the relevant Google site, and check that Chrome’s default microphone is the one you intend to use.
- Check your computer’s privacy or security settings to make sure Chrome is allowed to use the microphone. Also confirm the operating system’s selected input and recording level.
- Return to the site and try the microphone again. If the site asks for permission, grant it.
Menu names and exact operating-system paths vary by computer and version, so use the current microphone privacy instructions from your operating-system maker if the system-level control is hard to find. On a work or school computer, an administrator may manage Chrome permissions.

Fix microphone access on Android
Android has separate controls for an app and a website in Chrome. Check the one that matches the feature you are using; if both the Google app and a Google website fail, review both sets of permissions.
Google app or Assistant
Open Android settings, find the Google app’s permissions, and allow microphone access. Google says microphone permission supports voice input in the Google app and voice interaction with Assistant. See Google Search Help’s microphone permission guidance. Menu labels vary by Android version and device maker.

Troubleshoot Google Meet on a computer
For Meet in a browser, check the meeting state and input device before changing advanced settings. Google’s computer audio troubleshooting guidance covers microphone access, mute, and device selection.
- Make sure you are not muted in the meeting and that the browser has microphone permission.
- In Meet, select the microphone or connected audio device you intend to use.
- If you are in Companion mode and the microphone is unavailable, leave the meeting and rejoin without Companion mode.
- Watch the blue speaking indicator on your meeting tile as you speak. It can help confirm whether Meet is detecting your voice, rather than confusing your microphone problem with another participant’s audio or your own speaker output.
- If you use Bluetooth, verify that the audio device is connected to the computer and reconnect it if necessary.
If the basic checks do not help, update Chrome and restart it. Google’s Meet guidance suggests entering chrome://restart in Chrome’s address bar when browser updates or apps and extensions holding microphone access may be involved. Save any work first, since this restarts Chrome.

When the problem may be the computer or microphone
If the microphone fails in more than one app, the issue is less likely to be limited to a Google site. Recheck system-level microphone access, the selected input, the input level, the physical mute switch, and the connection. For a Bluetooth device, disconnecting and reconnecting it is a supported Meet troubleshooting step.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the issue is specific to Meet on a Mac after those checks, Google’s Meet troubleshooting guidance includes restarting the computer. For other operating systems or device-specific controls, follow the current instructions from the device or operating-system maker rather than assuming the same menu path applies.
