Fortnite’s “Servers Not Responding” message means the game cannot complete a connection; it does not, by itself, prove that Fortnite is down for everyone or that your home network is at fault. Check Epic’s live status page first, especially Login if you cannot sign in or Matchmaking if you reach the lobby but cannot join a game. If the relevant services are operational, try basic connection checks one at a time.
What does “Servers Not Responding” mean?
Epic’s support and status pages do not define this exact error message as a diagnosis. It is best treated as a connection symptom: the game is not getting a response it needs, but the wording alone cannot identify where the problem lies.

Two broad possibilities are a service-side issue, such as maintenance, and a problem somewhere along your local connection path, such as Wi-Fi or router trouble. That is a useful troubleshooting model, not an official Epic definition. An operational overall status also cannot rule out every intermittent or platform-specific issue.

Check Fortnite’s service status before changing settings
Open Epic Games Public Status and look at Fortnite and the component that matches where the error occurs. The status page lists services separately, so a general “All Systems Operational” label is less informative than the status of the specific service you need. Check again if the problem continues, because status can change.

- Cannot sign in or get past the account stage: check Login.
- Reached the lobby but cannot join a match: check Matchmaking.
- Party, voice, or other features are affected: check the corresponding listed component as well as Fortnite’s general status.
Epic’s status page showed Fortnite, Login, Matchmaking, and the other listed Fortnite components as operational when checked on October 3, 2026, at 04:14 UTC. That is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of the current state.
Could scheduled maintenance be the cause?
Yes. Epic’s status history records scheduled Fortnite downtime for the v42.30 update on October 1, 2026. The notice said matchmaking would be disabled 30 minutes before the stated downtime, which began at 4 AM ET (8 AM UTC); Epic marked the maintenance complete at 10:31 UTC. This illustrates why matchmaking may stop working before an update window, but it does not establish how long future maintenance will last.

If Epic lists an incident or maintenance, follow the status updates and wait for the service to return. Reinstalling Fortnite, changing DNS, or buying networking equipment cannot restore an unavailable Epic service. Epic also has Fortnite support topics for scheduled maintenance and technical support.
If Epic services look operational, try these checks
Make one change at a time so you can tell whether it helped. These are general troubleshooting suggestions, not fixes Epic has confirmed for this exact message.

- Close and reopen Fortnite completely. Then retry the same sign-in or matchmaking step.
- Restart your device. This can clear a temporary connection or application issue.
- Restart your router. After it reconnects, test Fortnite again.
- Check for pending updates. Look for updates to Fortnite and your device’s system software, install any available updates, and retry.
- Compare another network, if available. If Fortnite works on a different connection, that points toward the original network path, though it does not identify the exact cause.
If Wi-Fi seems unstable and you already have access to one, testing with an Ethernet connection can help compare wired and wireless performance. A cable is only a way to test the connection path; it will not fix an Epic outage.
Be cautious with advanced network changes
NAT, DNS, firewall, port-forwarding, and antivirus settings can vary by platform and network. The available Epic support landing page points users to technical support but does not provide a universal step-by-step fix for this error. Before changing those settings, consult current instructions for your platform or contact Epic support. Avoid treating a setting change—or a VPN—as a guaranteed fix.

When to contact Epic support
If the relevant Epic services appear operational and the basic checks do not help, use the Fortnite support knowledge base for current technical-support guidance. Include your platform and whether the failure happens at login or when entering matchmaking; those details help distinguish the connection stage that is failing.
