Form state in Jetpack Compose feels difficult because a form combines several different jobs: owning values, processing edits, coordinating validation and business logic, and restoring input after recreation. The classic value/onValueChange pattern makes state flow explicit, but Android’s migration guidance warns that it can create synchronization problems for text input. State-based fields address the editing side with TextFieldState, but require a deliberate fit with the app’s ViewModel and StateFlow architecture.
Why form state is harder than “store a string”
Compose is declarative: the UI displays the state it receives, and user actions request changes to that state. That model makes ownership and data flow visible, but a text field’s editing state is richer than its displayed string. Users can change text and selection while the app also needs to validate values, share them with other composables, submit them to business logic, and possibly restore them after the screen or process is recreated.

With a value-based field, the app supplies a value and receives proposed edits through onValueChange. The callback updates the source of truth, which is then supplied back to the field. This supports unidirectional data flow, but every edit crosses that boundary. Android’s migration guidance cautions that this approach can have unpredictable downsides for text input and cause deep synchronization issues. That is a tradeoff in the API model, not proof that every Compose form is broken.

State should live as close as practical to the composables that use it, and move outward only when another part of the UI or business logic needs it. Android’s guidance puts the rule this way: “You should hoist UI state to the lowest common ancestor between all the composables that read and write it.” Android Developers: Where to hoist state.

| Situation | State owner and pattern | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One simple field with no outside logic | Keep state near the composable that consumes it; choose the field API supported by the project’s Compose version. | Avoids hoisting state farther than necessary. |
| Several composables read or change the same value | Hoist it to their lowest common ancestor and pass state and events. | Maintains one clear source of truth. |
| Business logic needs the current input | Put the relevant state in a screen-level state holder, or connect UI-owned field state to that logic deliberately. | Ownership follows the needs of the logic. |
| New state-based fields are feasible | Consider holding TextFieldState in a ViewModel, following Android’s migration example. |
It avoids making a StateFlow string model directly drive editing state. |
An existing immutable UiState architecture must remain |
Keep it as a data holder and observe field text with snapshotFlow. |
This is Android’s documented alternative; the StateFlow model does not directly drive the fields. |
| Input must survive recreation | Choose saving behavior according to ownership: rememberSaveable for Composition-scoped state, or separate save/restore handling for ViewModel-owned TextFieldState. |
Different owners have different restoration paths. |

What changes with state-based text fields
TextFieldState is a dedicated state holder for text and selection, rather than just a string passed into a field. State-based fields give the input interaction a more complete state model. They also change the architectural question: how should that state connect to a ViewModel that exposes immutable UI data through StateFlow?

Android Developers’ migration page, last updated October 1, 2026, says: “The problem is that the new TextFieldState design is not directly compatible with the StateFlow backed ViewModel UI state.” The page presents two approaches: hold TextFieldState references in the ViewModel, or retain the existing ViewModel data holder and observe Compose field state with snapshotFlow. In the second approach, the existing StateFlow model does not drive the text fields directly. Read the current migration guidance before choosing between them.

Holding TextFieldState in a ViewModel is not inherently wrong: Android describes it as a Compose snapshot-backed state holder without UI elements. But changing a settled immutable UiState design may not be practical. The bridging option exists for teams that need to preserve that model. The choice is about ownership, synchronization, and architectural fit—not a universal rule that every ViewModel must or must not contain this state.

Check API stability before migrating
State-based fields are version-sensitive. Android’s text-field documentation labels them experimental in the version context retrieved for this guidance and cites Material 3 version 1.4.0-alpha14 in its feature comparison. That does not establish the status of every later release. Check your app’s Compose and Material 3 dependency versions and the current text-field documentation before adopting APIs or planning an upgrade.
Plan restoration separately from ownership
Keeping state in the right place does not automatically define how a form survives recreation. rememberSaveable can restore UI-owned state across activity or process recreation. A ViewModel-owned TextFieldState needs separate save and restore handling. Android also cautions against putting large objects into saved instance state; keep saved data appropriately small. See Save UI state in Compose.

A practical way to choose
- Keep local state local: if only one composable needs the input and no business logic consumes it, avoid adding a ViewModel boundary just because the value belongs to a form.
- Hoist shared values only as far as needed: when multiple composables read or change a value, place it at their lowest common ancestor.
- Choose the text-field model with your architecture in mind: state-based fields may fit a new or adaptable screen; if immutable
UiStatemust stay, use the documentedsnapshotFlowbridge rather than expecting StateFlow to drive the field directly. - Treat restoration as its own requirement: decide explicitly what must survive recreation and implement saving for the chosen owner.
- Check version and stability: confirm the APIs available in the project’s actual Compose dependencies.
These are architectural options, not performance rankings: the official guidance offers patterns, not comparative benchmarks. Android’s State in Jetpack Compose codelab is a useful companion for practicing the underlying state concepts.
