Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCursor problems do not all have the same cause. A failed sign-in or stalled agent points toward a different first check than slow typing or an extension that misbehaves. Start by identifying what fails, then use the least disruptive test for that symptom. Cursor’s troubleshooting guide groups possible causes around extensions, app data, network connectivity, and system problems.
Start by pinning down what changed
Before changing settings or deleting data, note the exact error or behavior, the action that triggered it, and whether it happens in one workspace or across all of Cursor. Record whether it began after an update, a network or VPN change, or an extension change. Find your OS and Cursor version in the app’s Help/About screen. These details make it easier to choose a relevant fix and to report a reproducible problem.

If chat, sign-in, or updates are failing
Run Cursor’s network diagnostics
Open Cursor Settings > Network > Run Diagnostics. Cursor says the check tests your connection to its servers and identifies network issues that can affect AI features, updates, or other online functions. If it reports a connection problem, check whether a firewall, proxy, VPN, or network restriction is involved. On a managed network, ask the administrator before changing security settings.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Consider proxy and remote-connection conditions
Some enterprise proxy configurations can interfere with live chat and agent responses. Cursor’s network configuration guidance describes HTTP/2 bidirectional streaming as the default and an HTTP/1.1 Server-Sent Events fallback when HTTP/2 streaming does not work. For SSL-inspecting proxies, Cursor calls out requirements such as SSE passing through without buffering and long-running connections not being forcibly timed out. These are network-administration issues, not reasons to weaken security controls on your own.

If the problem occurs only with Remote SSH, Cursor says AI requests run from the local machine. If it began after using a VPN and DNS behavior seems involved, Cursor suggests fully restarting the app; inherited environment variables can persist. These checks apply to those specific situations, not every connection failure.
Check current sign-in allowlisting instructions
For workplace sign-in failures, use Cursor’s live sign-in domain guidance and coordinate allowlisting with IT. The page reviewed on October 7, 2026 says sign-in is moving to accounts.spacex.ai and accounts.x.ai; it describes the older-page fallback as temporary and scheduled to retire on October 30, 2026. Because domain guidance and transition dates can change, verify the current page rather than relying on a saved list.

If Cursor is slow, freezes, or input lags
Test whether an extension is responsible
Launch Cursor with extensions disabled:
cursor --disable-extensions
If performance improves, turn extensions back on individually until the slowdown returns; that isolates a likely culprit. Cursor notes that high resource use often stems from extensions or settings, so this test is more informative than removing unrelated app data.
Reduce indexing of generated files
If the workspace contains large generated directories, add appropriate paths such as dist/, build/, or .next/ to the project’s .cursorignore file. Cursor recommends this to keep generated folders out of indexing. Only exclude directories that do not need to be part of the files Cursor considers for your work.

If an agent times out or the Extension Host will not start
Gather diagnostic evidence before trying a reset. Cursor’s agent troubleshooting page describes a 60-second Extension Host startup timeout and recommends exporting logs through Developer: Export Logs…, selecting Main, Window, and Extension Host. Also inspect Output > Extension Host for related errors.
When contacting support or posting to the forum, include the exported zip, a screenshot with sensitive details redacted, your OS and Cursor version, and exact steps that reproduce the failure. Cursor notes that causes vary; endpoint security software is one possibility on managed or enterprise machines. For an agent response issue, its troubleshooting guidance also says to copy the Request ID from the response menu.

Reset app data only after lower-risk checks
Clearing Cursor app data is not a routine first fix: Cursor says it removes items including extensions, themes, snippets, and installation-related data. Export your profile before proceeding, and follow the current OS-specific steps in Cursor’s troubleshooting guide rather than applying commands for another platform. Cursor also notes that reinstalling from its Downloads page restores the previous state unless app data is cleared, so reinstalling alone may not resolve a problem stored in that data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose the next step by symptom
| What you notice | First useful step |
|---|---|
| Chat, sign-in, or updates fail | Run Settings > Network > Run Diagnostics; investigate relevant firewall, proxy, VPN, or network restrictions. |
| Slow performance or delayed input | Run cursor --disable-extensions; if it helps, isolate extensions, then consider excluding large generated folders with .cursorignore. |
| Agent timeout or Extension Host startup failure | Export Main, Window, and Extension Host logs and inspect Output > Extension Host. |
| Problem persists across lower-risk checks | Collect reproduction steps, system details, console errors, and logs; consider app-data cleanup only after exporting your profile and reviewing Cursor’s OS-specific instructions. |
Cursor’s troubleshooting guide covers app data, reinstalling, and issue reporting; its performance guidance covers extension isolation and generated-folder exclusions. For additional symptom-specific help, consult the Cursor Help Center.
