If Clean Up is missing from Photos, first check whether your iPhone or iPad supports Apple Intelligence: installing a newer iOS or iPadOS release does not make the feature available on every device. On supported devices, availability also depends on software version, language and region. Use the checks below to identify which condition applies before treating Clean Up as a Photos malfunction.
1. Check whether your iPhone or iPad is eligible
Clean Up is an Apple Intelligence feature. Apple’s current iOS 27 guide lists iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later as compatible with Apple Intelligence. The iPadOS 27 guide lists iPad mini with A17 Pro and iPad models with M1 or later.

These are model requirements, not just operating-system requirements. If your device is outside those groups, Clean Up is unavailable even if it can install a current OS; that points to an eligibility limit rather than a broken Photos app.
2. Confirm the software version and regional requirement
Apple’s Clean Up requirements page gives iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 as the baseline releases. For residents of the European Union, it specifies iOS 18.4 or iPadOS 18.4 or later on supported devices. If you are using iOS or iPadOS 27, follow the current guide for the editing steps below.

Check for the latest compatible update in Settings → General → Software Update. Updating is a sensible low-risk check, but Apple’s reviewed documentation does not say that updating alone fixes every missing or unresponsive Clean Up control.
3. Check Apple Intelligence and its availability
Because Clean Up is powered by Apple Intelligence, confirm that Apple Intelligence is available and enabled on your device. Apple’s current iPhone and iPad guides explain how to use the feature, while the requirements page describes the OS and device conditions. The support pages do not establish a Clean Up-specific Settings switch as a universal repair for a missing button.

Availability can vary by language and region. Apple also states that Clean Up does not currently work on devices purchased in mainland China. A separate restriction applies to devices purchased elsewhere when the user is in mainland China and the Apple Account country or region is also set to mainland China. Check Apple’s Apple Intelligence availability and language information alongside the Clean Up requirements before changing account or region settings.

4. Match the device language and Siri language
Apple says the device language and Siri language must be set to the same supported language for Apple Intelligence. If you change a language, the required language support may still be downloading; Apple notes that it can take time for Apple Intelligence to become available afterward. See Apple’s current language and availability details, since supported languages and regional availability can change.

5. Open Clean Up from the right place in Photos
On iPhone with the current iOS interface, open the photo you want to edit, tap Edit, then choose Tools and Clean Up. Apple’s iPad guide likewise starts by opening a photo and tapping Edit; the available controls may be presented somewhat differently by device and OS.
- Open Photos and select an image.
- Tap Edit.
- Choose Tools, then Clean Up.
- Tap, brush over, or circle the distracting object you want to remove.
Apple describes Auto, Fast, and High Quality processing options, as well as undo during the editing session. After saving, use Reset to revert Clean Up edits. For the current controls and details, consult Apple’s iPhone Photos guide.

6. Test another photo
If Clean Up opens but does not respond as expected on one image, try a different photo to see whether the behavior is limited to that image or occurs more broadly. This is a practical diagnostic check, not a documented Apple guarantee that a particular image is the cause or that switching photos will fix the problem.

Restart the device, make sure it is running the latest compatible software, then try the Photos path again. These are common, low-risk troubleshooting steps, but Apple’s reviewed pages do not certify them as Clean Up-specific fixes. If your model, software, language, region, and editing path all meet Apple’s stated conditions and the feature is still missing or unusable, contact Apple Support with your device model and OS version rather than attempting an unsupported reset.

If your device is not eligible
There is no setting or accessory that adds Apple Intelligence compatibility to an unsupported model. You can continue using another photo-editing method available to you, edit on a supported Apple device you already have access to, or consider a device change only if its broader benefits justify the cost. Replacing a device solely to obtain Clean Up is not a routine troubleshooting step.
