“Chat GPT” is officially branded ChatGPT, and a failure on your computer does not necessarily mean the service is down. The cause may be an OpenAI incident, damaged browser data, an extension, a VPN or security filter, a blocked work network, an authentication mismatch, a long conversation, or a broken desktop app. Start by checking OpenAI’s status page, then use the tests below to separate a service problem from a computer-specific one.
Quick diagnostic checklist
- Open status.openai.com and look for an incident involving ChatGPT, login, conversations, uploads, models, or the desktop app.
- Wait 30–60 seconds if a response is still processing. Choose Stop generating, then Regenerate.
- Start a new chat and submit the prompt again.
- Reload the page, then perform a hard refresh with Ctrl + Shift + R on Windows/Linux or Command + Shift + R on macOS.
- Open ChatGPT in an Incognito, InPrivate, or Private window.
- Temporarily disable extensions, VPNs, proxies, secure-DNS filters, and antivirus web protection for the test.
- Clear site data for ChatGPT and OpenAI, then sign in again.
- Try another up-to-date browser and, if possible, a phone hotspot.
- Sign in with the same authentication method used when the account was created.
These steps are based on OpenAI’s troubleshooting guidance at its error guide and login guide. Each test also provides evidence about where the fault is.
First determine whether ChatGPT is down
Open status.openai.com at the time of the failure. An active incident affecting ChatGPT, login, a model, file uploads, or the desktop app makes a service-side cause likely. The status page can change quickly, and “fully operational” does not guarantee that every model, plan, region, or feature is working for every user.
- Works on your phone or another network, but not this computer: concentrate on the browser, app, security software, or local network.
- Fails on several devices and networks at once: an OpenAI incident, account, workspace, subscription, or model-specific problem is more likely.
- Only one model or feature fails: check status and try a basic text chat before changing your computer.
OpenAI’s incident history is available at status.openai.com/history. Do not treat an old incident as proof of a current outage.

If ChatGPT is blank, frozen, or stuck loading
Reload without losing time
Stop and regenerate once, then try a new chat. A hard refresh requests current page resources instead of relying mainly on cached files, but it does not remove every cookie or session record. In the desktop app, quit it completely and reopen it rather than only closing the current conversation.
Use a private window
Open an Incognito window in Chrome or Edge, a Private Window in Firefox, or choose File > New Private Window in Safari. Private browsing is a diagnostic test, not a complete privacy solution. If ChatGPT works there, suspect an extension, cookie, cached session, or damaged browser profile.
Disable extensions temporarily
Test with ad blockers, script blockers, anti-tracking tools, cookie managers, URL blockers, page-modifying extensions, corporate security add-ons, and any password or identity extension that affects sign-in turned off. These tools can block scripts, authentication controls, streaming responses, or WebSocket connections. If the problem disappears, re-enable them one at a time and keep only the configuration you understand; do not leave security protection disabled unnecessarily.
Clear only relevant site data
- Open your browser’s site or privacy settings.
- Remove cookies and site data for
chatgpt.com,chat.openai.comif it remains in a legacy session,auth.openai.com, andopenai.com. - Close and reopen the browser.
- Sign in again.
Clearing site data can sign you out and remove saved preferences for those sites. It is usually preferable to deleting your entire browsing history.

What common error messages mean

Check cookies, JavaScript, VPNs, and security filters
Allow JavaScript and necessary cookies for chatgpt.com, openai.com, and auth.openai.com. Some sign-in flows may also need third-party cookies. A cookie-consent overlay or cookie manager can prevent the login interface from completing.
Disconnect a VPN, disable an active proxy, and temporarily turn off secure-DNS filtering or antivirus “web protection” for a controlled test. These can cause network errors, WebSocket failures, Cloudflare loops, suspicious-login warnings, incomplete content, or certificate errors. If ChatGPT works afterward, re-enable protections one at a time and allow the required traffic instead of leaving protection off.
Try another browser, profile, or network
Use a different current browser—for example, Chrome to Edge or Firefox, or Safari to Chrome or Firefox on macOS. A new browser profile can isolate profile corruption. Interpret the result as follows:

- Works in another browser: the original profile, extension, cookie, cache, or browser setting is responsible.
- Fails in every browser on this computer: investigate computer-wide security software, operating-system issues, or the network.
- Works on another device with the same account: the computer or its connection is the likely boundary.
For a network test, disconnect Wi-Fi and connect the computer to a phone hotspot. If ChatGPT works on the hotspot but not home Wi-Fi, investigate the router, DNS, ISP filtering, parental controls, or a gateway. If it works on home Wi-Fi but not a company or school network, a managed-network policy is likely. OpenAI’s network guidance for administrators is at help.openai.com/en/articles/9247338. Do not bypass an employer’s security controls without authorization.
If you cannot log in
Go to chatgpt.com/auth/login and use the original method: email and password, Google, Microsoft, or Apple. Using email/password after registering with Google, choosing the wrong Google or Microsoft account, or overlooking Apple’s Hide My Email address can produce an authentication error or create a separate account.
Login button does nothing or loops
- Open a private window.
- Allow JavaScript and cookies.
- Disable ad blockers, privacy tools, VPNs, and proxies temporarily.
- Try another browser and network.
If “Checking your browser…” repeats, a Cloudflare challenge may be blocked by a privacy tool or managed network. Ask the network administrator to review the challenge handling rather than attempting to evade company controls.
Suspicious-login warnings
Stop repeated attempts, disconnect a VPN or proxy, clear site data, use the original sign-in method, and try another network. OpenAI advises waiting up to one hour after repeated failed attempts may have triggered a temporary restriction; that is guidance, not a guaranteed duration. Account deactivation or subscription problems require OpenAI Support.

If ChatGPT works on your phone but not your computer
This result makes a broad outage less likely. Test in order: private window, extensions off, another browser, hotspot, and then the desktop app. If the hotspot fixes it, focus on Wi-Fi or its filtering. If every browser fails but the phone works on the same Wi-Fi, inspect computer security software, system date and time, certificates, and proxy settings. An incorrect system clock can break authentication or certificate validation.

- Confirm that ChatGPT works at chatgpt.com.
- Quit the app completely and reopen it.
- Sign out and back in, install available updates, and restart the computer.
- If only the app fails, uninstall and reinstall it from OpenAI’s official source.
- Use the web version while diagnosing the installation or an app-specific incident.
macOS requirements
OpenAI’s requirements page, checked for this article on October 1, 2026, says the current macOS app requires macOS 14 or later and Apple Silicon M1 or better, or an Intel processor. OpenAI says the previous app is now called ChatGPT Classic and remains supported. Requirements can change: macOS requirements.
Windows requirements
The Windows help page lists Windows 10 version 17763.0 or higher and x64 or ARM64 architecture. It describes the app as an early version, so features may differ from the web and macOS apps: Windows app information.
A past Windows-app incident on June 27–28, 2026 left some app users unable to connect while web and mobile remained available; it is historical, not evidence of a current outage. See the incident record.

Managed work and school networks
Corporate and school firewalls may block OpenAI domains, content-delivery resources, WebSockets, authentication redirects, or Cloudflare challenges. Ask IT to review allowlisting and filtering using OpenAI’s network recommendations. A hotspot can confirm the policy is the boundary, but it may consume mobile data. Changing DNS can affect privacy, parental controls, and other services, so treat it as an optional, administrator-approved test rather than a default fix.
When a file download fails
Generate the file again and try another browser. Disable VPN or security filtering temporarily and check whether the link has expired; a file link can expire while the conversation remains available. OpenAI’s cited download guidance mentions a 512 MB limit for that specific download scenario, not every ChatGPT file or feature. See OpenAI’s error guidance.
What to send OpenAI Support
If the failure persists across normal and private windows, browsers, devices, or networks, contact Support with:
- Exact error text, date, time, and time zone.
- Operating system, browser and version, or desktop-app version.
- Whether private mode, another browser, another network, or another device changes the result.
- VPN, proxy, extension, antivirus, or managed-network status.
- Selected model, conversation URL or ID, and any displayed request ID.
- Screenshots plus browser-console errors.
- A HAR file reproducing the issue, if Support requests it.
Do not include passwords, authentication tokens, private conversation contents, or sensitive business data. OpenAI explains the diagnostic information it needs at help.openai.com/en/articles/7996703.

Only consider an upgrade after ChatGPT works in a private window or on another network. The official pricing page currently shows signals of $0/month for Free, $20/month for Plus, $200/month for Pro, and $25 per user/month annually or $30 per user/month monthly for Business; prices, taxes, currencies, billing channels, limits, and features can change by location. A paid plan can change access limits or features, but it cannot repair a browser, unblock a school network, correct a login-method mismatch, or prevent an OpenAI outage. Business and Enterprise workspaces can also have administrator restrictions. Do not buy a VPN, third-party desktop client, browser extension, or “PC cleaner” as a ChatGPT fix.
The Bottom Line
Check OpenAI’s status page first, then use private browsing, a hard refresh, extension and VPN isolation, targeted site-data clearing, another browser, and another network. The test that changes the result identifies where to focus; reinstall the desktop app only when the web version works and the app alone fails.
