Delete ordinary temporary files with Windows’ own cleanup tools, but do not routinely empty the Prefetch folder. In Windows 10 and Windows 11, Storage settings, Storage Sense, Cleanup recommendations, and Disk Cleanup can remove disposable data while reducing the chance of deleting files an active app still needs. Prefetch is a Windows-managed startup cache; clearing it rarely creates useful space and can temporarily make launches slower.

Before you start

  • Save open work and close browsers, installers, games, and other applications.
  • Review anything in Downloads before selecting it for removal.
  • If Windows says a file is in use, choose Skip. Do not take ownership or change permissions just to remove a routine temporary file.
  • Menu names can vary slightly by Windows build, edition, language, or administrator policy.

The safest way to remove temporary files

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Select Temporary files.
  3. Review each category and its estimated size.
  4. Select only categories you understand, then choose Remove files.

Windows may list application working data, update remnants, thumbnails, diagnostic files, Recycle Bin contents, previous Windows installations, and other categories. They are not equally disposable. Removing Previous Windows installation(s) removes the option to roll back to the earlier installation, while selecting Downloads can remove personal files. Microsoft’s current guidance is available in its Windows drive-space instructions.

Use Storage Sense for routine cleanup

  1. Go to Start > Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Open Storage Sense and turn it on if necessary.
  3. Select Run Storage Sense now, Clean now, or the equivalent control shown on your build.

Storage Sense primarily manages the Windows system drive, usually C:. Its behavior for Recycle Bin, Downloads, and cloud-backed files depends on the settings you choose. Downloads are not ordinarily removed unless you configure that option. OneDrive files may be made online-only; that is different from permanently deleting the cloud copy, and files marked Always keep on this device are exempt from that management. Scheduled operation can depend on the user being signed in and online, and an organization may control or disable the feature through policy. See Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance and configuration documentation.

Review Cleanup recommendations

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Select Cleanup recommendations.
  3. Review temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps.
  4. Check the items you want removed and select Clean up for the relevant section.

This view is useful when you want to inspect candidates before deleting them rather than emptying a folder blindly.

Use Disk Cleanup

  1. Search the taskbar for Disk Cleanup and open it.
  2. Choose the drive, normally C:, and select OK.
  3. Check the categories you want to remove.
  4. For additional system categories, select Clean up system files, choose the drive again, review the expanded list, then select OK and confirm.

The program is cleanmgr.exe. Advanced users can save a profile and run it later with:

cleanmgr /sageset:1
cleanmgr /sagerun:1

The number can be replaced with another numeric identifier. Microsoft documents the available options in the cleanmgr command reference.

Manually clear a user’s Temp folder

Use this fallback when built-in cleanup does not address a specific problem. Delete the contents, not the folder itself.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter %TEMP% and press Enter. This normally opens the signed-in user’s temporary folder; %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalTemp is the equivalent path.
  3. Press Ctrl+A, then Delete (or Shift+Delete if you deliberately want to bypass the Recycle Bin).
  4. Approve permission prompts when required and choose Skip for files in use.

A locked file usually belongs to a running application, Windows component, or security scanner. Restart Windows and retry if many files are locked; a few skipped files are normal.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

Manually review the system Temp folder

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter C:WindowsTemp and press Enter.
  3. Approve administrator access if prompted.
  4. Delete only the contents Windows permits and skip locked items.

Do not delete the Temp folder itself. Its contents and permissions vary with installed software, services, and account type.

Should you delete Prefetch files?

Normally, no. Prefetch data is stored under C:WindowsPrefetch and contains information Windows can use when starting applications and parts of the operating system. It is performance-related cache data, not ordinary disposable clutter.

You can inspect the folder by pressing Windows key + R, entering C:WindowsPrefetch, and pressing Enter. In routine maintenance, leave its contents alone. Microsoft-hosted Q&A guidance describes Prefetch as self-maintaining: clearing it generally provides little useful storage and may temporarily slow startup or application launches while Windows rebuilds data. The explanation is community-hosted, so historical implementation details should not be treated as guarantees for every current build. Source: Microsoft Q&A.

If a qualified technician or an official troubleshooting procedure specifically requires clearing Prefetch, preserve the folder itself and remove only the contents requested. Do not expect a permanent speed improvement.

What to do when a file will not delete

  • Close the program that may be using it, including File Explorer windows showing the folder.
  • Restart Windows and try the built-in cleanup tool again.
  • Choose Skip for files reported as in use.
  • Do not force deletion by changing ownership, altering permissions, terminating system processes, or using Safe Mode for ordinary cleanup.

Temporary folders can be recreated or cleaned automatically by Storage Sense or scheduled maintenance. If files immediately reappear, identify the application or service generating them instead of repeatedly deleting the output. Microsoft documents one such automated temporary-folder behavior at this support article.

Choose the right method

Situation Best choice Main caution
General cleanup Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files Review categories before removal
Low system-drive space Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations Check Recycle Bin, Downloads, and cloud settings
Older interface or missing Storage Sense Disk Cleanup Labels may be less descriptive
One user’s Temp folder is unusually large Manual %TEMP% cleanup Close apps and skip locked files
System Temp needs review C:WindowsTemp Administrator approval may be required
Trying to speed up startup by clearing Prefetch Leave Prefetch alone Deletion can cause temporary slower launches
A file is locked Close the related app, restart, or skip it Do not force permissions changes

If the drive is still full

Temporary-file cleanup may recover little space when the real cause is elsewhere. In Settings > System > Storage and Cleanup recommendations, investigate:

  • Large downloads, videos, archives, virtual machines, and game files.
  • Installed applications and games you no longer use.
  • Recycle Bin contents.
  • Windows Update remnants and previous Windows installations.
  • Cloud synchronization settings and files stored locally.
  • Crash dumps, logs, Microsoft Store package caches, or an application that is generating data continuously.
  • System Restore or recovery storage.
  • Other drives; Storage Sense focuses on the configured system drive unless separate controls are used.

A Temp folder that refills rapidly can be caused by a Microsoft Store app package, update process, runaway cache, or malware. Find the generating process rather than making repeated deletions. For slow startup, Microsoft also recommends examining startup applications, available storage, updates, malware, drive health, and hardware limitations; clearing Prefetch is not a general performance fix. See Microsoft’s performance guidance.

On a work-managed PC, Group Policy, Intune, or other controls may hide Storage Sense or deny system-file access. Contact IT instead of bypassing those controls.

What each cleanup option is best for

  • Storage Sense: easiest for recurring maintenance, with settings to review.
  • Cleanup recommendations: clearest review-before-delete workflow.
  • Disk Cleanup: useful for system files and older Windows configurations.
  • Manual Temp cleanup: targeted troubleshooting, but more likely to encounter locks and permission prompts.
  • Prefetch deletion: generally poor routine-maintenance choice.

The Bottom Line

Use Storage settings, Storage Sense, Cleanup recommendations, or Disk Cleanup to remove temporary data. Manually clear Temp contents only when necessary, skip files in use, and leave C:WindowsPrefetch alone unless a specific, trusted troubleshooting instruction says otherwise.
