Identify which app appears before trying fixes: on Windows, Task Manager can reveal whether the process is Microsoft Edge or something else. A white window is different from a flickering display or a screen that has gone blank, and each calls for a different troubleshooting path.
First, identify what the white box is
When the box appears, note whether it has a title bar, app icon, or taskbar entry; whether it closes by itself; and whether it shows up at startup, after unlocking, after waking the PC, or while using a particular app. Check whether other windows or the entire display are affected. A screenshot or phone photo may help distinguish a real window from a rendering artifact.

Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc while the box is visible. Look for an app or process that appeared at the same time. If the window is Edge or you see msedge.exe, use the Edge steps below. If you cannot identify it, do not assume a cause based on its color alone.
If the box is a Microsoft Edge window
Microsoft documents a specific Edge symptom: “A blank Edge window appears briefly and then closes.” Its troubleshooting guidance is for Edge on Windows, not a general fix for every white window. Try one change at a time and check whether the symptom returns.

- End leftover Edge processes. In Task Manager, end the
msedge.exetasks, then restart Edge. Microsoft notes that background Edge processes left from a previous session can interfere with a clean start. See Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting steps. - Test graphics acceleration. If Edge stays open long enough, go to
edge://settings/systemand temporarily turn off “Use graphics acceleration when available.” If that stops the blank window, update the graphics driver and then turn acceleration back on. - Check whether the profile or an extension is involved. Try Edge with a temporary profile. If Edge starts normally there, the issue may be tied to the original profile or one of its extensions. Microsoft’s guidance explains how to create a new profile and move wanted data.
- Update or repair Edge if it remains unstable. To repair it, open Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Edge > Modify > Repair. Microsoft says repair should not affect browser data or settings. See Microsoft’s Edge repair guidance.
If the whole screen flickers or looks scrambled
A small, separate white window is not the same as screen flicker. For flickering across the display, Microsoft says to compare Task Manager’s behavior: if Task Manager flickers too, a display-driver issue is more likely; if Task Manager stays steady while the rest of the screen flickers, an incompatible app is more likely. This is a diagnostic clue for screen flicker, not a universal test for a small popup.
Depending on when the flicker began, Microsoft recommends updating, rolling back, or uninstalling the display driver, or updating or removing the incompatible app. The guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so that operating system no longer receives standard support updates. Follow Microsoft’s screen-flicker troubleshooting guide for the applicable steps.

If the display is actually blank
Use this branch only if most or all of the display is blank, rather than a floating white window. Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance recommends checking power and external display connections, and trying Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B to reset the graphics driver. If a cursor is visible, press Ctrl+Alt+Del, open Task Manager, and restart Windows Explorer. For a persistent blank screen, the guidance also covers Safe Mode and updating or rolling back the display driver; checking another cable or monitor can help rule out a connection problem.

When unwanted software is a reasonable concern
A white box by itself does not establish that malware is present. Consider this branch if there are independent signs of unwanted software, such as unwanted advertising or other suspicious behavior. Microsoft distinguishes potentially unwanted applications from malware and recommends removing software you do not recognize or need, updating Microsoft Defender security intelligence, and running a full scan.
