Usually, the link is intentional: the sender either chose iCloud Link in Photos or Mail used Mail Drop to deliver a large attachment. These are different sharing methods, and a photo appearing inline in an iPhone Mail draft does not, by itself, show whether it will arrive as a file or a link.
Which kind of link did the sender use?
iCloud Link from Photos
When someone shares photos or videos from the Photos app with iCloud Link enabled, the email contains a URL for viewing or downloading the media rather than a conventional file attachment. Apple says these photo and video links remain available for 30 days. Apple’s iPhone guide to sharing photos and videos describes the option as sharing a URL to view or download the items.

Mail Drop from Mail
Mail Drop is Apple’s way to send large attachments through iCloud when a file exceeds the maximum size allowed by the sender’s email account. The recipient may receive a download link instead of a file carried directly in the message. Apple says Mail Drop supports attachments up to 5 GB, subject to restrictions, and recipients have 30 days to download them. Those are Mail Drop limits, not guarantees that every recipient’s email provider will accept a message of that size. Apple’s Mail Drop limits and requirements explains the service.

How to send a photo as a regular email attachment
- Start or open a draft in Mail. Tap in the message body to bring up the attachment actions above the keyboard.
- Choose Photo Library. Select the photo or video and return to the draft. Apple documents this as a way to attach saved media in Mail. Apple’s iPhone Mail attachment guide has the steps.
- If sharing from Photos, check Options. If iCloud Link is enabled, turn it off when you want to avoid sharing a Photos URL, then use the email workflow. Apple describes the toggle as the setting for sharing a URL to view or download photos and videos. Apple’s iPhone Photos sharing guide.
- Read any size warning. If Mail says the file exceeds the email account’s maximum size, following the onscreen instructions to use Mail Drop means the recipient may get a download link. Apple’s Mail guide documents that prompt.
Choose a sharing method that fits the recipient

How to identify what happened to a particular email
- If the sender shared from Photos, ask whether iCloud Link was enabled in Options.
- If the sender composed the message in Mail, ask whether an oversized-attachment prompt appeared and Mail Drop was selected.
- Check the received message for a URL or a download control, but do not rely on how the image looked in the sender’s draft: Apple says the appearance of an attachment in Mail can vary with file size.
If neither iCloud Link nor Mail Drop was involved, Apple’s published guidance does not establish the cause for that specific message. The sender’s sharing steps and any size prompt are the most useful details to check.
