First identify which side of the call has the problem: if people cannot hear you, check the microphone; if you cannot hear them clearly, check the receiver and speaker; if calls cut out with weak or missing service, investigate the cellular connection. A blocked opening, app permission, software setting, carrier issue, or hardware fault can cause similar symptoms, so the symptom alone does not identify the cause.
Why do iPhone calls sound muffled or keep dropping?
Separate the problem into three paths before changing settings:

- Other people cannot hear you: the microphone path may be obstructed, affected by an app permission, or malfunctioning.
- You cannot hear the other person clearly: the receiver or speaker opening may be blocked or dirty, or the call may be affected by reception.
- The call drops or will not connect: coverage, a carrier or account issue, settings, or software may be involved. “No Service” or “Searching” means the iPhone is not connected to a mobile network.
Compare a built-in recording with an ordinary call, check whether the issue happens in one app or everywhere, and try another location. Those comparisons help distinguish a microphone or app problem from a speaker-path or network problem.

If other people cannot hear you on calls
- Remove anything that could cover an opening. Temporarily take off the case, screen protector, or film and try again.
- Check for visible debris. Clear it gently; do not push a sharp object into a microphone opening.
- Test the microphone with Voice Memos. Open Voice Memos, record while speaking at the bottom of the iPhone, then play the recording. Apple says the voice should sound clear. See Apple’s iPhone microphone troubleshooting steps.
- Test the speakerphone microphone if that is the specific problem. In Camera, record a video while speaking at the top of the phone, then switch cameras and record another. Play back both recordings.
- Check app access if it happens only in one third-party app. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and confirm that app is enabled. If permission is enabled—or the app is not listed—Apple advises contacting the app developer.
If recordings and calls are still unclear after these checks, arrange service. A persistent fault is not proof that a particular part needs replacement.

If you cannot hear the other person clearly
- Check the receiver opening. Temporarily remove cases, films, or screen protectors and look for anything blocking or dirtying the opening.
- Clean gently if needed. Apple recommends a small, clean, dry, soft-bristled brush for the speaker or receiver opening. Avoid pushing objects into the opening.
- Try speakerphone. If audio is still absent, static-filled, or crackling, try the call later or from another location. Reception or the network may be responsible.
- Seek service if distortion persists. If sound remains distorted or absent after these checks, consult Apple’s guidance for distorted speaker sound and arrange service if appropriate.
If iPhone calls keep dropping or fail to connect
- Refresh the cellular connection. Toggle Airplane Mode off and on. If the status bar shows No Service or Searching, leave Airplane Mode on for at least 15 seconds before turning it off, as Apple’s No Service or Searching guidance directs.
- Restart the iPhone and check for updates. Install available iOS updates and carrier or network-provider settings updates.
- Compare locations. Try a call somewhere else. If it works there, coverage or a local network condition may be contributing.
- Ask your carrier to check its side. Have it confirm that the account is active and set up for your iPhone, whether there is a local outage or billing block, and whether it detects a network error. Apple’s failed-call guidance also covers these checks.
- Review settings that can affect incoming calls. Check Focus or Do Not Disturb, blocked numbers, Call Forwarding, and Silence Unknown Callers if calls fail to arrive.
- Reset Network Settings only after simpler steps. This erases saved Wi-Fi passwords, preferred networks, and previously used VPN and APN settings. You will need to set up affected network connections again.
If the carrier and account checks do not explain the issue and hardware seems possible, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
Can Wi-Fi Calling help in weak coverage?
It may: when cellular coverage is limited or absent, Wi-Fi Calling can carry ordinary calls over Wi-Fi if the feature is supported by the carrier and in your region. To enable it on current Apple guidance, open Settings > Cellular, select the appropriate line if you use multiple SIMs, tap Wi-Fi Calling, and turn on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone. Setup may ask for an emergency address. Check support and requirements with your carrier. See Apple’s Wi-Fi Calling setup and limits.

If Wi-Fi Calling will not work, check feature availability and software, restart the iPhone, try another Wi-Fi network, and then contact the carrier. Emergency calls may use Wi-Fi when cellular service is unavailable and Wi-Fi Calling is enabled; location handling depends on the service. Do not assume Wi-Fi Calling replaces checking local emergency-call arrangements.

When to contact your carrier or Apple
- Contact the carrier when calls drop or fail in particular locations, service shows No Service or Searching, or account status, an outage, billing, or network error may be involved.
- Contact the app developer when microphone trouble occurs only in one third-party app and its microphone permission is enabled or the app is not listed.
- Contact Apple or an authorized service provider when built-in recordings remain unclear, or receiver/speaker sound remains distorted or absent after the basic checks.
