Its content and related data can add to that footprint, too. To see what is using space on your device, check Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
Download size and installed size measure different things
Apple defines an app’s compressed size as its download size and its uncompressed size as the size of the installed app on the device. Downloading transfers a compressed package; installation expands the files needed to run the app. That is why the installed app can take up more storage than the number shown for its download.

Apple illustrates the difference with one sample app measuring 6.7 MB compressed and 18.6 MB uncompressed. This is an example, not a typical ratio: there is no universal multiplier for how much larger an installed app will be. Apple’s app-size documentation explains the distinction.

The app’s content and data can add to its footprint
The installed app is not necessarily the only storage associated with it. Apple says the iPhone’s Apps category includes installed apps and their content. Depending on the app, the space associated with it can therefore go beyond the uncompressed app itself. The App Store download figure is not a measure of all the space the app may use later.

Some apps also use cached or temporary files. Apple notes that cached and temporary data might not count toward reported usage, so the number shown in storage settings is not guaranteed to be a complete inventory of every transient file. It also does not follow that every difference is cache.
How to check an app’s storage on iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then iPhone Storage.
- Review the app list and tap an app to see its storage details and available actions.
Use the app’s entry here to understand its current footprint on your device rather than treating the App Store download size as the total. The amount can vary with the app’s contents and the device’s state. Apple’s storage guide describes the list and its reporting caveats.

Offloading and deleting an app are different

These options are available from the app’s details in iPhone Storage when offered. Apple notes that some apps may also let you delete some of their documents and data separately. Choose offloading when you want to free the app’s space while keeping its data; choose deletion when you want to remove the app and related data. Apple explains both options here.

App thinning lets developers deliver the code and resources needed for a particular device, rather than requiring every device to receive identical contents. Apple also documents on-demand resources—assets hosted separately from the app bundle and downloaded when needed. As a result, the downloaded or installed contents can depend on the device and how the app obtains resources.

There is an important version caveat for on-demand resources: Apple’s current App Store Connect guidance says the feature is deprecated on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, tvOS 27, and visionOS 27, with support to be removed in future releases. This does not mean every app uses the feature. See Apple’s app-size guidance and its on-demand resources guidance for details.
