Intent-based trading lets an AI agent specify the trade it wants and the limits it will accept, while specialized solvers or fillers find and execute a route. That division makes intents a plausible fit for agents: they can express a bounded outcome without choosing every low-level transaction step. It is an architectural case, not proof that intents always outperform direct transactions or that they are universally safer.
What intent-based trading changes
In a conventional transaction flow, an agent may need to select a route, assemble transaction details, and submit an on-chain transaction. With an intent, it instead describes an outcome or order conditions—such as what it wants to trade and the acceptable limits—and delegates the execution search to another participant.
That separation is visible in ERC-7683, whose authors describe it as “a solver-facing interface for intent protocols.” A protocol-specific resolver translates its order payload into common instructions that a programmable solver can evaluate. The proposed interface does not require every protocol to use the same authorization, price-resolution, settlement, or execution method. ERC-7683 is marked draft, so it should not be treated as a universally adopted standard.
Why this can suit AI agents
A bounded request is easier to reason about than an execution recipe
An agent can focus on a user-level objective and constraints rather than making every routing and transaction decision itself. Solvers or fillers then compete to find a way to satisfy that request. This can reduce how much low-level execution logic the agent must handle, while leaving the agent responsible for defining a sound objective and acceptable limits.

Execution can be delegated without erasing protocol differences
Intent is an interface pattern, not one universal trading mechanism. Authorization, pricing, settlement, and execution order still depend on the particular protocol. ERC-7683 aims to give solvers common instructions to evaluate while allowing those protocol-specific differences to remain.
Agent tooling is emerging, but outcome evidence is limited
Uniswap documents plugins and skills for coding agents, including swap and trading tools. Its Trading API documentation also describes an optional X-Agent-Info attribution header for AI-agent traffic. These are signs of agent-aware developer tooling, not evidence of broad adoption or better trading results. No controlled comparison establishes that autonomous agents achieve better outcomes with intents than with direct transactions.

How current designs differ
Intent-based systems can share the idea of expressing a desired trade while differing substantially in how they find liquidity, authorize orders, and settle execution.
| Design | Order expression and execution | Competition and liquidity | Standardization status |
|---|---|---|---|
| ERC-7683 | A draft solver-facing interface: a protocol-specific resolver converts its payload into common instructions for solver evaluation. Authorization, settlement, price resolution, and execution remain flexible. | Defines an interface for solver evaluation; it does not prescribe a single competition or liquidity mechanism. | Draft EIP; not evidence of universal implementation. Source |
| CoW Protocol | Uses trade intents and fair combinatorial batch auctions. | Solvers seek Coincidence of Wants within a batch; if no match is found, they can consider on-chain and off-chain liquidity. | Protocol-specific design. Source |
| UniswapX | Swappers sign orders that define outputs and auction parameters. | Fillers compete to settle orders, with pricing across liquidity sources described in Uniswap’s overview. | Protocol-specific design. Source |
What agents and users still need to check
Specify the objective and limits carefully
Solver competition cannot repair an order that asks for the wrong asset, permits an unacceptable price, or omits an important condition. The agent needs to represent the user’s goal accurately and set meaningful bounds before submitting an intent.

Understand authorization and custody
A signed order or token permission grants authority within the terms of the relevant implementation. Before using an agent, understand which key signs, what an allowance or order authorizes, what limits apply, and how permissions can be revoked. There is no single safe configuration established across these protocols.
Consider solver assumptions and settlement rules
ERC-7683 surfaces assumptions and dependencies that a solver must validate before execution. CoW Protocol documents limit-price constraints, validity rules, winner selection, and potential penalties for misconduct in its solver competition rules. The details matter: a common intent interface does not make solver behavior or settlement rules identical across systems.

Treat gas and MEV claims as protocol-specific
Uniswap’s overview presents gas-free swaps, MEV protection, and no cost for failed transactions as UniswapX benefits. Those are protocol claims, not guarantees that eliminate contract, liquidity, market, or key-management risks. A reader should assess the specific order and implementation rather than infer that an intent is risk-free.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the intent model is useful—and what remains unproven
The model is most compelling when an agent should state a desired result and constraints while leaving route discovery and execution to specialized participants. It creates a cleaner boundary between decision-making and execution, and protocols such as CoW Protocol and UniswapX show different ways to implement that boundary.

Whether this is the natural protocol shape for AI agents remains an architectural judgment, not a settled empirical conclusion. The sources document protocol designs and agent-oriented integration work, but not controlled agent-versus-direct-transaction results. ERC-7683 is also still draft, so cross-protocol or cross-chain interoperability should not be assumed.
Builders evaluating integration can consult Uniswap’s AI documentation and the Trading API order reference for its agent-facing tooling and order submission details.
