Gabriel Zamora’s September 10, 2026 PCMag review argues that Marvel’s Wolverine has plenty of graphic violence but too little variety in its missions, pacing, or combat to make the action satisfying. His central complaint is not simply that the game is bloody: it is that a linear, interruption-heavy structure and repetitive fights work against the fast, forceful Wolverine fantasy. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not evidence of a wider critical consensus.
What Zamora says the game offers—and what it leaves behind
Zamora frames the game against Insomniac’s Spider-Man titles. Where he valued those games’ open-world movement and navigation, he says Wolverine shifts to mission-based progression. He describes a semi-open Tokyo section as limited and its collectibles as padding. These points are his interpretation of the game’s design, rather than findings from independent testing.

That change matters to his argument because movement and momentum are part of the appeal of a superhero action game. In Zamora’s view, Wolverine’s more constrained structure does not give the player enough freedom to offset the slower stretches between fights.
Why does the pacing feel slow?
Zamora says action is regularly interrupted by extended walks, dialogue, exposition, cutscenes, and mandatory investigation tasks. He points to a sequence in which the player must search a facility for drawings before progression can continue. His criticism is about the mismatch: a game built around an aggressive, fast-moving character repeatedly asks the player to stop and handle slower tasks.
#1 Best Overall
- Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
- Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
- An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
- A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor
Those interruptions can make the action feel less propulsive even when the game returns to combat. In the review’s account, investigation is not merely optional world-building; at least some of it blocks progress, so players seeking a steady run of fights may find the pacing especially frustrating.
Is Wolverine’s combat deep?
Zamora’s answer is no. He argues that standard attacks and finishers encourage repetition, while heavier attacks can leave the player vulnerable during their animations. He also says some abilities depend on leveling or cooldowns, limiting access to them at particular moments. The review presents these as reasons the combat does not consistently reward varied, deliberate play.
He treats dismemberment as largely presentational rather than as the foundation of a deeper combat system. In other words, graphic outcomes do not by themselves make the underlying decisions more interesting: his complaint is that the player’s options and the incentives to use them feel limited.

The action-game comparisons behind the criticism
To explain the standard he wanted, Zamora cites Ninja Gaiden 4 as a demanding combat sandbox with a resource meter, Ninja Gaiden 2 for a dismemberment-to-finisher loop, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance for precise blade control. Those comparisons show what he values—combat depth, player control, and systems that reward skilled play. They are examples from his review, not an objective ranking of the games or independent verification of their mechanics.
Does the story make up for the gameplay?
Zamora finds the plot predictable and says its parallel story threads fail to make their stakes compelling. He characterizes Logan’s arc as an “uninspired retread” of the original PlayStation 2 God of War and describes the alternate-reality Team X material as fan service. Those are his judgments about the writing and its effect; they should not be mistaken for settled facts about the story’s quality.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Wolverine worth the price?
The review listed the game at $69.99 on September 10, 2026. That is a dated price shown in the article, not a verified current price. Zamora’s negative verdict rests on the combination of mission-based structure, interruptions, repetitive combat, and a story he found unpersuasive—not simply on the presence of graphic violence. Whether that makes the game worthwhile depends on how much a player values its particular action and presentation, but the review offers little encouragement to anyone chiefly looking for open-ended movement or a combat system that continually rewards mastery.

Before making a purchase decision, check a current official or retailer listing for the platform, edition, availability, and price. The review describes the game as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, but those details were not independently confirmed alongside its dated price.
How much weight should one review carry?
This is a strongly negative review by one author, Gabriel Zamora, published by PCMag and carried by Yahoo Tech on September 10, 2026. Its conclusions are useful as a clear account of one player’s priorities and frustrations; one review alone does not establish critical consensus, and the available information does not document an independent playtest beyond Zamora’s review.
