Indian IT stocks can fall after a quarter of profit growth—or rise when profit misses—because the share price reacts to how results and future expectations compare with what investors already anticipated. A useful analysis goes beyond headline profit: check constant-currency and reported revenue growth, operating margins, earnings, cash generation, bookings, and management’s outlook. These measures describe the business; they do not, on their own, prove why a stock moved on a particular day.
Why can an IT stock fall after apparently good results?
A result is not judged in isolation. Investors interpret it against expectations that may include analyst forecasts, the company’s earlier guidance, and assumptions already reflected in the share price. If the published numbers are positive but weaker than those expectations, the release can still disappoint. A company can also report higher revenue or profit while signaling slower growth, margin pressure, or a softer next quarter.

“Good” therefore needs a reference point. Year-over-year growth answers whether a metric is higher than it was in the same quarter last year. It does not establish whether the company met its own guidance, exceeded market expectations, or improved on the immediately preceding quarter. Those are separate comparisons and can lead to different interpretations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe reverse is possible, too. A profit figure below a forecast may be accompanied by stronger revenue, resilient cash generation, improving deal indicators, or more favorable guidance. Investors may focus on the parts that change their view of future performance. That is a possible explanation, not proof of the cause of a particular share-price move.

Expectations can also change before results arrive. If a share price already reflects optimism, a solid quarter may not add enough new information to support a further rise. If expectations were low, results that are merely less weak than feared may be received more favorably. Without comparable consensus forecasts, valuation data, and price movements over a defined event window, it is not possible to say which factor drove a specific reaction with certainty.
What should you check in an IT company’s results?
Read the measures together and keep the reporting period aligned. A single headline can conceal differences between growth, profitability, earnings, and cash conversion. When a company provides the figures, use the following sequence to build a clearer picture:
- Compare actuals with expectations and prior guidance. Look for the company’s own guidance range and its reported actual, then compare those with market consensus only if you have a reliable, period-matched estimate. Meeting company guidance is not the same as beating analyst expectations.
- Separate constant-currency growth from reported growth. Constant-currency figures reduce the effect of exchange-rate movements on the comparison; reported figures reflect the currency conversion used in the accounts. If both are disclosed, record both rather than treating them as interchangeable.
- Check operating margins alongside revenue. Revenue growth says something different from the share of revenue retained as operating profit. Note both the margin level and its direction against the same period a year earlier or the prior quarter, using like-for-like periods.
- Read net income and EPS as distinct measures. Net income is the company’s profit for the period; earnings per share expresses profit on a per-share basis. A change in EPS need not have the same percentage as revenue growth. Do not treat one as a substitute for the other.
- Check cash generation. Operating cash flow can help assess how much reported profit was accompanied by cash from operations. A cash-flow ratio has a defined denominator and period: retain those details when comparing it with another company or quarter.
- Use bookings and deal metrics as forward indicators, not earned revenue. They can provide information about business won or contracted, where disclosed, but bookings are not revenue already recognized. Timing, conversion, and the company’s definitions matter.
- Read management’s next-quarter outlook. Compare the guidance with the quarter just reported and with previous guidance. A forecast can alter the forward picture even when the completed quarter contains both positive and negative signals.
For a comparison across companies or quarters, put the same reporting periods side by side. Include constant-currency and reported growth, operating-margin level and direction, net income or EPS, cash conversion, bookings or deal indicators, and guidance versus later actuals. Keep valuation and market expectations in a separate part of the analysis: operating results alone do not tell you what investors had priced in.

How the Wipro Q1 FY27 example illustrates the framework
Wipro’s results release dated July 16, 2026, covers the quarter ended June 30, 2026. Its figures show why it is useful to examine several measures rather than summarize a quarter with a single label. The numbers below are Wipro’s reported operating results and guidance, not a measure of how its shares reacted.
| Measure | Wipro’s Q1 FY27 figure | What it helps you assess |
|---|---|---|
| IT-services revenue | $2,614.5 million; up 1.0% year over year in reported dollars and 0.9% in constant currency | Revenue growth, with the reported and constant-currency comparisons kept distinct. |
| IT-services operating margin | 16.0%, down 1.2 percentage points year over year | Profitability and its direction; revenue growth did not mean the margin was higher. |
| Net income | ₹33.6 billion, up 0.6% year over year | Profit for the period, which should be considered alongside revenue and margins. |
| EPS | ₹3.20, up 0.6% year over year | Per-share earnings growth, reported separately from revenue growth. |
| Operating cash flow | 98.0% of net income | Cash generated from operations relative to reported net income for the period. |
| September-quarter IT-services revenue guidance | $2,574 million to $2,627 million; sequential guidance of negative 1.5% to positive 0.5% in constant currency | Management’s forward range and its stated sequential constant-currency comparison. |
These figures do not all point in the same direction. Revenue, net income, and EPS were higher year over year, while the operating margin was lower. Cash flow was reported as a proportion of net income, and the next-quarter revenue range allowed for either a small sequential decline or a small increase in constant currency. Whether that mix was better or worse than investors expected cannot be established from the release figures alone.
Wipro’s guidance tracker offers a second comparison. For Q1 FY27, it lists guided-currency revenue of $2,619.1 million against a range of $2,597 million to $2,651 million; the release gives reported-currency revenue of $2,614.5 million. This lets a reader compare the company’s actual with its own guidance range. It does not stand in for analyst consensus or establish what the market expected.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
The currency distinction matters here: the tracker’s guided-currency figure and the release’s reported-currency figure are not identical measures. The release reports year-over-year IT-services growth of 1.0% in reported dollars and 0.9% in constant currency. Quoting just one of those figures without its basis can make a comparison less precise.
Does guidance matter more than earnings?
There is no universal rule that guidance matters more than the quarter just reported. The relative importance depends on what the results change about the company’s expected future performance and how much of that outlook the share price may already reflect. Guidance is especially useful when it gives a clearly defined range for a comparable metric, but it should be read together with the results that inform it.
In Wipro’s July 2026 release, management gave September-quarter IT-services revenue guidance of $2,574 million to $2,627 million, corresponding to sequential guidance of negative 1.5% to positive 0.5% in constant currency. That range is a forward-looking estimate, not a reported outcome. It describes a range of possible revenue performance according to the company’s stated measure; it does not guarantee where the result will land or predict the stock’s next move.

Management commentary can help explain the assumptions behind a range, but it is not a substitute for the numbers. Wipro CEO and Managing Director Srini Pallia said in the same release: “Clients are moving beyond technology modernization to AI-enabled operating models that improve quality, resilience, and productivity.” CFO Aparna Iyer said: “While these investments may create some near-term margin volatility, it sets a strong foundation for future growth.” Those statements express management’s view; readers should assess them alongside reported performance and subsequent results rather than treat them as independently verified forecasts.

Guidance comparisons are useful only when the figures refer to the same business, currency basis, and reporting period. A company may give a range in one measure and later report results in another. The Wipro tracker’s guided-currency figure and the release’s reported-currency figure illustrate why labels matter. Preserve the source’s exact basis and compare like with like wherever possible.

Confirm that the guidance and actual refer to the same revenue measure, such as IT-services revenue, rather than mixing segment revenue with company-wide revenue.
- Match the period. A quarter’s actual should be compared with guidance for that quarter, not with the next quarter’s outlook or a full-year target.
- Match the currency basis. Do not compare a constant-currency or guided-currency value directly with a reported-currency value as though they were calculated the same way.
- Keep company guidance separate from market consensus. A result within management’s range may still be above or below analyst expectations. These are different benchmarks.
- Record the comparison date. Guidance can change as new information becomes available. Use the range that applied to the period being assessed, not a later forecast.
Wipro maintains a historical guidance-versus-actual tracker, which can help with the company-guidance comparison. For other issuers, use their official results material and period-specific disclosures. Infosys’s FY26 Q4 results page links its releases, statements, fact sheet, investor sheet, and earnings-call transcript; HCLTech’s quarter-results index organizes releases and financials by quarter and fiscal year. These are routes to company information, not a shared dataset of stock reactions or analyst forecasts.

Why bookings can look strong without settling the revenue question
Bookings and large-deal announcements can indicate that a company has won business, but they do not show that all of the associated revenue has already been recognized. There can be a gap between a deal being recorded as a booking and revenue appearing in reported results. The timing and conversion depend on the company’s disclosures and definitions.
Wipro reported total and large-deal bookings for Q1 FY27. Those figures can be considered with revenue and guidance as indicators of business activity, but they should not be added to recognized revenue or treated as a promise of a particular next-quarter result. Check whether the company explains the metric, what period it covers, and whether the comparable prior-period figure uses the same definition.
What can and cannot be inferred from a post-results share move
A price change after an earnings release is an outcome in the market, not a direct readout of any one line in the accounts. The release can change investors’ expectations, but prices can also reflect pre-existing positioning, valuation, broader market conditions, and other information arriving around the same time. The size and direction of a move do not prove which factor mattered most.
To make a stronger claim about an event, an analyst would need a defined event window, comparable share-price data, a benchmark for the broader market, and a way to distinguish the release from other news. A claim that one metric typically causes a particular next-day return would require systematic evidence across companies and periods. The company disclosures discussed here do not provide that evidence, so they cannot establish a usual Indian IT-stock reaction or a causal rule.
For a single company, a disciplined explanation should separate what is observable from what is inferred. You can say that revenue growth was modest, margins declined, or guidance covered a particular range when those facts are in the release. You cannot conclude from those facts alone that one of them caused the stock to rise or fall. If the actual price move and market expectations are not independently established, leave the market reaction itself unquantified.
Quick Recap
A practical earnings-reading checklist
- Write down the company, segment, fiscal quarter, and release date before comparing numbers.
- Note year-over-year and sequential comparisons separately; do not substitute one for the other.
- Record reported and constant-currency growth separately when both are disclosed.
- Compare revenue with operating-margin level and direction, net income, EPS, and operating cash flow.
- Check the company’s guidance range for the period and compare it with the actual on the same basis.
- Keep company guidance, analyst consensus, and market pricing as distinct reference points.
- Read bookings as business indicators, not as recognized revenue.
- Use management commentary to understand stated assumptions, then test those assumptions against later reported results.
- Describe a share-price move cautiously unless you have evidence that connects it to the release and accounts for other market information.
