If Safari displays text but leaves photographs, logos, or thumbnails blank, the problem is usually a blocked web resource or a Safari setting—not a broken screen. Work through the checks below in order: reload and change networks, test extensions and content blockers, remove data for the affected site, verify JavaScript and privacy settings, then check Private Relay, VPNs, updates, and the website itself.
First, identify how widely images fail
Before changing settings, determine whether the failure affects one page, one website, or every website. That distinction prevents unnecessary resets.
One page or one website
Open two or three unrelated sites. If images load elsewhere, the affected site may have stale cookies, a broken session, a content-delivery problem, or a compatibility issue with one of your settings.
Every website
System-wide failures point more strongly to an extension, content blocker, VPN, Private Relay, security filter, network outage, or an outdated operating system. A display hardware fault is less likely when text and page controls render normally.

Only one network
On iPhone or iPad, switch from Wi-Fi to cellular data (or another Wi-Fi network). On a Mac, connect through a different network if possible. If the images return, the original router, DNS filter, workplace network, or security product is interfering with image requests.
Fix missing images on iPhone or iPad
- Reload and isolate the connection. Tap the reload button, then test the page in another tab. Try cellular data or a different Wi-Fi network. A result that changes with the network points away from the display and toward filtering or connectivity.
- Review Safari extensions and content blockers. Open Settings > Apps > Safari > Extensions and temporarily turn off blockers or privacy extensions. Some third-party tools intentionally block cookies, images, scripts, pop-ups, or other resources. Reload the page after each change so you know which switch mattered. Turn a non-causal extension back on after testing.
- Remove data for the affected site. Go to Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > Website Data, find the site, and delete its stored data. This is more targeted than wiping all browsing data, but it can sign you out and remove saved preferences for that site.
- Check JavaScript and site permissions. In Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced, confirm JavaScript is enabled. Review Safari’s per-site settings for the page, including content blockers, camera or location prompts, and any restriction that could prevent scripts from running. Some sites build their image elements only after JavaScript executes.
- Test privacy relays, VPNs, and security apps. If iCloud Private Relay is enabled, temporarily turn it off for the affected site or connection and reload. Also pause a VPN, DNS filter, antivirus web shield, or parental-control profile for a controlled test. Apple notes that a VPN can cause apps or websites to block content from loading. Restore protection immediately when testing is complete.
- Update and restart. Safari is updated through iOS or iPadOS. Install available software updates, restart the device, and test again. This can repair a stuck networking process and brings current WebKit fixes.
Fix broken images on a Mac
- Reload, then use a Private Window. Choose File > New Private Window and open the same URL. If images work privately, stored site data, an extension, or a content blocker is the likely cause. If they fail in both modes, investigate network and privacy layers next.
- Disable extensions temporarily. Choose Safari > Settings > Extensions. Clear the checkbox beside each extension, reload the page, and re-enable extensions one at a time. If you use a blocker with a per-site control, allow the affected website rather than disabling the tool globally.
- Delete only the site’s stored data. Go to Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data, search for the domain, select it, and click Remove. This removes cookies, caches, and local storage for that domain and may sign you out. Avoid Remove All until targeted removal has failed.
- Verify JavaScript and privacy choices. In Safari > Settings > Security, confirm Enable JavaScript is selected. Review Privacy settings and the website’s Settings for This Website menu. A page may be incompatible with one or more browser settings; change one setting at a time and reload.
- Check Private Relay, VPN, and filtering software. Pause Private Relay for a controlled test, disconnect a VPN, and inspect network-monitoring or endpoint-security software for blocked requests. Corporate proxies and DNS filters can reject an image host while allowing the HTML page itself.
- Update macOS and restart. Install pending macOS updates, restart, and revisit the page. Safari updates arrive with macOS, so updating the browser separately is not normally required.

Settings that commonly block images
Content blockers and extensions
Blockers can match image URLs, advertising hosts, tracking domains, or scripts that construct image elements. A site may appear text-complete while its media requests are rejected. Use a per-site allowlist when available instead of turning off protection for all browsing.
JavaScript and cookies
Modern galleries, lazy-loaded images, and consent workflows often depend on JavaScript and cookies. Disabling either can leave placeholders empty. Restore the setting, reload, and accept the site’s necessary consent prompt if you trust the site.

Private Relay, VPNs, and security filters
These services change the route or identity presented to a website. A site, CDN, or network policy may then deny image requests while serving the page shell. A brief, controlled test identifies the layer; it does not prove that the privacy tool is defective.

When the website is the problem
If unrelated sites display images, the same page fails in a Private Window and on another network, and disabling extensions changes nothing, the publisher likely has a broken image URL, an unavailable CDN object, a certificate or permissions error, or code that is incompatible with Safari. Use Safari’s Report a Website Issue option on Mac when available, or contact the site developer. Include the page URL, device and operating-system version, Safari version, whether the failure affects all images or only some, and the network tests you performed.
Performance and privacy while troubleshooting
- Change one variable at a time and reload after each change; otherwise you cannot identify the cause.
- Prefer deleting one domain’s data over clearing all history and cookies. A full wipe signs you out of many services and erases useful troubleshooting state.
- Use a Private Window as a diagnostic, not a permanent workaround. It does not repair a broken site or network.
- Re-enable blockers, VPNs, Private Relay, and security software after the test that identifies the fault. If a site requires an exception, create the narrowest exception possible.
- For managed work or school devices, policy may prevent changing these settings. Ask the administrator rather than installing another browser or bypassing controls.

Troubleshooting quick reference
Nothing changes after disabling extensions
Test a different network and pause the VPN or Private Relay. If images still fail everywhere, update the operating system and restart. A managed DNS or security filter may require administrator changes.

That is expected: cookies and local storage were removed. Sign in again, then consider allowing the site in your blocker rather than repeatedly deleting its data.
Only lazy-loaded images remain blank
Scroll through the page slowly and wait for content to appear. If it never does, JavaScript or a blocked image/CDN request is likely. Test with blockers disabled and JavaScript enabled.

The page reports a broken-image icon on every device
This is strong evidence of a site-side failure. Report the URL and details to the website owner; changing Safari settings will not repair an unavailable source file.

Will clearing Safari history fix missing images?
It can, but it is a broad reset. Remove data for the affected domain first; clearing all history and website data also removes sign-ins and saved site state.

The browsers may differ in extensions, privacy settings, cached data, JavaScript behavior, or network handling. Compare Safari with a Private Window and with extensions disabled before treating the issue as Safari-wide.

Can a VPN really stop pictures from loading?
Yes. A VPN or its associated filtering can change the route or identity used for requests, and a website or network may block the image host while allowing page text.
Should I leave content blockers disabled?
No. Disable them only to identify the cause, then re-enable protection and add a narrow exception for the affected site if necessary.
