First open the same image in Preview, then check Finder’s Preview pane. Those tests separate a readable image from a Finder icon-preview or thumbnail-generation problem.
Start with two checks
Finder can show an image in several different ways. The small picture inside a file icon is one path; the Preview pane is another; Preview is a separate app; and Quick Look Thumbnailing supplies thumbnails used by Finder and Spotlight. A failure in one path does not automatically mean the image itself is broken.
- Open a representative file in Preview. In Finder, select the image, Control-click it, choose Open With, and select Preview. If Preview displays the picture, the file is readable by that application. That does not prove Finder’s thumbnail service is healthy, but it rules out a simple “the icon is blank, therefore the file is corrupt” conclusion. Apple documents Preview as the app for viewing images and PDFs.
- Check Finder’s Preview pane. Select the file in a Finder window and use the View menu to show the Preview pane. macOS menu wording can vary by release; look for Show Preview or the equivalent pane command. If the pane displays the image while the icon remains generic, the problem is specifically the icon-preview or thumbnail path.
Record the result of both tests before changing anything. Also note your macOS version, the file extension, and whether another image in the same folder has a thumbnail.
What each preview method tells you

Restore Finder’s icon previews
Choose an icon view and enable previews
Open the affected folder in Finder and choose View > as Icons. In the same View menu, look for Show Icon Preview and enable it. The exact label and placement can differ between macOS releases. If the option is already enabled, turn it off and on once, then revisit the folder.

This setting controls whether Finder draws content previews in icons. It is independent of the larger Preview pane, so changing one does not guarantee that the other will change.
Recheck the Preview pane
With the file selected, use Finder’s View menu to show the Preview pane. If the pane is hidden, you may mistake a missing pane for a missing thumbnail. The pane is also a useful diagnostic: a visible image there means Finder can obtain a preview through that route even when the icon remains generic.
Compare a working file
Place one image that displays a thumbnail beside one that does not, or open both in the same Finder folder. Compare their extensions, locations, and macOS version context. This is a diagnostic comparison, not proof that any particular format is unsupported: the available Apple documentation does not provide a definitive, current compatibility matrix for every still-image format and Finder release.

Use the symptom pattern to narrow the cause

Do not treat every cache command as an image fix
Quick Look Thumbnailing is the system capability behind thumbnails in Finder and Spotlight. Third-party troubleshooting pages sometimes recommend deleting Quick Look caches or restarting thumbnail processes. One such page is written primarily for non-native video support from a particular extension, not as an Apple-approved repair procedure for still-image thumbnails.

- It names your macOS version.
- It applies to still images, not only to a non-native video plug-in.
- It explains what the command changes and how to undo it.
- It comes from a source you trust and matches your organization’s security policy.
When Finder still shows generic icons
At this point, gather a concise record instead of repeatedly deleting files or caches. Include:

- Your exact macOS version.
- The image extension and where the file is stored (for example, a local folder or removable storage).
- Whether Preview opens it.
- Whether Finder’s Preview pane displays it.
- Whether the problem affects one file, a folder, or many locations.
- Whether another image with a different extension displays a thumbnail.
- Whether the behavior started after an operating-system update.
Send those observations to Apple Support or the support channel for the software that created the image. This evidence is more useful than saying only that “thumbnails are broken,” and it avoids claiming a damaged cache or unsupported format without proof.

Will changing an image’s file extension restore its Finder thumbnail?
No. Renaming an extension does not convert the file or establish that the original format is unsupported. Test the file in Preview and compare it with a working image instead.
Is a generic icon proof that an image is corrupted?
No. Preview, Finder’s Preview pane, icon previews, and Quick Look Thumbnailing are separate inspection paths. A generic icon alone is not a corruption diagnosis.
Should I delete Quick Look caches first?
Not as a universal still-image remedy. Cache instructions found for non-native video extensions are scoped to those cases and are not Apple-verified fixes for every image-thumbnail problem.
