When images are not loading, first find the scope: is it one image, one website, every website in one browser, or several browsers and apps? That answer separates a broken page from an extension, damaged site data, a network block, or a wider outage.
Use this order: reload and test the same page in a private window and another browser; disable extensions if private browsing works; clear that site’s data; check JavaScript for Google Images; then investigate your connection, firewall, antivirus, and the website itself. Avoid advanced configuration edits until these low-risk checks are exhausted.
Start by identifying what is broken
Do not begin by resetting the entire browser. Record the smallest useful description of the failure:

Reload with your browser’s normal refresh control (or Ctrl+R on Windows/Linux or Command+R on macOS). If a single reload changes nothing, continue with the comparisons rather than repeatedly refreshing.

Follow this low-risk troubleshooting sequence

Use a private or Incognito window
Open the same address in a private window. Google’s Chrome guidance and Mozilla’s Firefox guidance both use this as a quick comparison. If the pictures appear there, the regular profile—not necessarily the website—is the next place to investigate. Private windows usually start with a cleaner extension and storage state, so this test is informative without changing your normal profile.

Test another browser
Try the page in a second installed browser. If the image works there, concentrate on the first browser’s extensions, cached data, cookies, settings, or security software. If it fails everywhere, a site or network cause becomes more likely. Menu names and behavior vary by browser release and operating system.

Disable extensions temporarily
Content blockers, privacy tools, script modifiers, download helpers, and other extensions can prevent an image request or alter the page. Disable extensions temporarily in the browser’s Extensions or Add-ons manager, then reload the page.

If images return, re-enable extensions one at a time and reload after each change. The extension that makes the images disappear again is the useful lead. Update it, adjust its site permission, or remove it rather than leaving every extension disabled. Google Chrome Help specifically recommends this one-at-a-time process after an Incognito comparison.

Clear targeted site data
Cached files or cookies can leave a site using stale or damaged data. Use the browser’s site-information control for the affected domain, or its Privacy settings to remove that site’s cookies and cached files. A targeted deletion is preferable to wiping all browsing data.
Clearing cookies can sign you out and may remove site preferences. Save any information you need before doing it. Reload and sign in again only after confirming that the site data was the cause. If a targeted clear does not help, broader cache-and-cookie clearing is a later option, not the opening move.

Check JavaScript when the problem is Google Images
Google’s “Troubleshoot issues with Google Images” guidance includes checking that JavaScript is enabled. This instruction applies to the Google Images service and its page behavior; it does not mean that every ordinary image file on every website requires JavaScript.

Restart, update, and reduce browser pressure
Chrome’s connection and loading guidance includes restarting the browser and checking for updates. Close excess tabs and applications if the browser is under heavy memory pressure, then reopen the page. An update can also change extension compatibility or fix a loading defect.

Check the connection and security software
If multiple sites or browsers are affected, confirm that the device is online and that other pages load. Check whether a firewall, antivirus product, filtering service, VPN, or managed network is blocking image requests. Temporarily changing a security rule can be a diagnostic step only when you understand the risk; restore protection immediately after testing and consult the product’s documentation or administrator.

Escalate a one-site failure
If the image is still missing in another browser after basic checks, the website may be serving a missing image or experiencing a server-side fault. Mozilla’s image guidance notes that a backslash in an image URL is a reason to contact the webmaster. Otherwise, report the page to the site’s support team with the page address, browser and version, the time of failure, and whether the image URL opens separately (if you know how to check it).
Browser-specific checks
Chrome and Google Images
For Google Images, compare normal and Incognito windows, clear cache and cookies, disable toolbars or extensions, and verify JavaScript. For broader Chrome loading failures, Google also recommends checking connectivity, restarting or updating Chrome, reviewing extensions and browsing data, checking security software, and considering memory pressure. Resetting Chrome settings is a later, disruptive step; it should not be your first response to a missing picture.
Firefox
Mozilla’s general display guidance points to cached data, extensions, browser settings, and blocked content. In Firefox, you can temporarily adjust Enhanced Tracking Protection for the affected site as a test, then restore the protection level. Firefox’s image-specific guidance also recommends trying another browser and warns that casual changes in the Configuration Editor can seriously affect stability, security, and performance.

Exact labels and locations can differ by Firefox release and operating system. If a menu is not where described, use the browser’s built-in settings search instead of changing hidden preferences at random.

What not to do first
- Do not immediately delete every cookie and saved site preference when one domain is affected.
- Do not leave all extensions disabled permanently; isolate the conflicting extension and restore the others.
- Do not assume JavaScript is required for every image because Google Images asks you to check it.
- Do not edit Firefox’s Configuration Editor casually. Mozilla warns that incorrect changes can affect stability, security, and performance.
- Do not buy a router, cable, or “repair” application before you have established that the problem is a hardware fault. The browser and network checks above provide the relevant diagnosis first.

When to contact the website or your administrator
Contact the website when one page or one image remains broken across browsers and networks, especially if the image address itself fails or contains a malformed character such as a backslash. Contact a network administrator when many sites fail only on a managed connection, or when firewall, antivirus, filtering, or proxy rules are involved. Include the exact page, browser/version, scope of the failure, and the tests you already performed; that information prevents support from repeating the same basic checks.
