Why Image File Thumbnails Are Not Showing in Windows 11 or 10—and How to Fix Them

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If File Explorer shows generic icons instead of image previews, first check its thumbnail setting: open File Explorer, select … > Options > View, clear Always show icons and never thumbnails, select Apply, and restart Windows Explorer or the PC. Then switch the folder to a large-icon view and test a local JPG or PNG. If those steps fail, rebuild the thumbnail cache, check whether the files are cloud placeholders, and install a handler such as PowerToys for formats Windows does not preview by default.

What the symptom tells you

A missing preview is not always one problem. The scope of the failure is the fastest clue:

  • Every image shows an icon: a File Explorer option, damaged thumbnail cache, or broader Explorer problem is likely.
  • Only one extension fails: Windows may lack a thumbnail handler for that format.
  • Only OneDrive or another cloud folder fails: the provider may be controlling previews for online-only or placeholder files.
  • Previews exist but are too small to notice: the folder may be using List, Details, or a small-icon layout.

The procedure below starts with reversible, low-risk changes and moves toward format support and system repair only when the evidence points there.

1. Choose a view that can display thumbnails

  1. Open the folder in File Explorer.
  2. Select View.
  3. Choose Large icons or Extra large icons. Medium icons can also show previews, while List, Details, and small-icon layouts may make them difficult to see.

File Explorer’s View command controls whether items appear as icons, lists, or details. Test the view change with a normal local JPG or PNG before changing system settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Turn thumbnail generation back on

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Select the three-dot … menu on the command bar, then choose Options. On some Windows 10 layouts, open the View tab through the classic Folder Options dialog.
  3. Select the View tab.
  4. Clear Always show icons and never thumbnails.
  5. Select Apply, then OK.
  6. Close and reopen the folder. If previews still do not appear, restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager or restart Windows.

This setting is system-wide for File Explorer, so it can restore previews across folders rather than fixing only the folder currently open.

3. Test a known-compatible image

Copy one ordinary JPG and one PNG to a local folder such as Pictures or the desktop. Do not begin with an image on a network share, removable drive, or cloud-only location. If the local JPG and PNG display thumbnails but another extension does not, the general setting is working; investigate that extension’s handler instead of repeatedly resetting Windows.

4. Rebuild a stale thumbnail cache

Windows stores generated previews in a thumbnail cache. A stale or damaged cache can leave generic icons even when the Explorer option is correct. Microsoft-hosted support guidance recommends resetting the thumbnail cache after confirming the setting above.

  1. Save any open work and close File Explorer windows.
  2. Use Windows search to open Disk Cleanup.
  3. Select the Windows system drive, normally C:.
  4. Check Thumbnails, leave unrelated categories unchecked unless you intend to remove them, and confirm the cleanup.
  5. Reopen File Explorer and allow time for previews to regenerate. A folder containing many images can take longer on the first pass.

Cache deletion removes generated previews, not the original image files. The first display after cleanup may be slower while Windows creates new thumbnails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Check whether cloud storage is supplying the previews

PowerToys documentation notes that thumbnail previews may not appear on paths managed by cloud-storage solutions such as OneDrive because the provider can supply thumbnails instead of Windows generating them locally.

How to isolate a cloud-path issue

  1. Copy one affected file into a local, non-synchronized folder.
  2. Make sure the file is fully downloaded rather than online-only.
  3. Open the local copy in a large-icon view.

If the local copy works, the problem is tied to the cloud path, file availability, or the provider’s thumbnail integration. Keep the file downloaded for offline access, check the provider’s status, and use its own preview behavior where appropriate. Avoid treating a cloud placeholder as proof that Windows’ thumbnail setting is broken.

6. Add support for uncommon formats

Thumbnail support depends on an installed format handler. Microsoft’s PowerToys File Explorer add-ons can add previews for SVG, PDF, G-code, BGCODE, STL, and QOI.

  1. Install Microsoft PowerToys from Microsoft’s official distribution channel.
  2. Open PowerToys and select File Explorer add-ons.
  3. Enable the add-on for the format you need, such as SVG or PDF.
  4. Close and reopen File Explorer. A reboot may be required before the handler is recognized.
  5. Use a large-icon view and test a local file of that type.

PowerToys extends support for the listed formats; it does not guarantee a preview for every proprietary, damaged, encrypted, or unusual file. If only one application-created format fails, verify that the application installed its shell or thumbnail handler.

7. Escalate when File Explorer itself is unstable

If thumbnails disappear together with crashes, blank folders, frozen navigation, or failures in unrelated Explorer features, treat this as an Explorer or Windows problem rather than a thumbnail-only setting.

  • Install pending Windows updates, then restart.
  • Restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager: press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Windows Explorer, and choose Restart.
  • Run Disk Cleanup if temporary or cached data is suspected.
  • Use Windows system-file repair tools when broader corruption is suspected, following Microsoft’s current support instructions for your Windows edition.

System repair is broader and less targeted than changing the thumbnail option or clearing the cache. Use it only after the narrower tests have failed or Explorer shows other symptoms.

Match the fix to the failure

Fix Best for Scope Risk and trade-off
Change icon view Previews are hidden by a compact layout One folder or view Immediate and reversible
Clear “Always show icons and never thumbnails” All image types show generic icons File Explorer broadly Low-risk setting change
Reset the thumbnail cache Setting is correct but previews remain stale or blank All regenerated thumbnails Safe; first rebuild can be slower
Check cloud availability OneDrive or another synchronized path is affected Cloud-managed locations May require downloading files
Enable a PowerToys add-on SVG, PDF, G-code, BGCODE, STL, or QOI files Selected extensions Requires installation and possibly a reboot
Update, restart, or repair Windows Explorer crashes or multiple features fail Operating-system level Broadest intervention; use last

Common failure cases and precise next steps

The checkbox was already clear

Confirm the folder uses Large or Extra large icons, then test a local JPG or PNG. If those still fail, reset the cache. Do not install a format add-on until a known-compatible format has failed.

JPG works but PDF or SVG does not

This is usually format-handler coverage, not a global thumbnail switch. Enable the corresponding PowerToys File Explorer add-on and reboot if requested.

Only files in OneDrive fail

Check whether they are online-only placeholders and test a downloaded local copy. Cloud software may supply or suppress previews on its managed path.

Thumbnails appear, then vanish

Restart Explorer and observe whether the issue returns after synchronization or cache cleanup. A recurring failure across local files points toward Explorer or system repair; a recurring failure only in a synchronized folder points toward the cloud provider.

Nothing changes after cache cleanup

Recheck the Explorer option, restart Windows, and test another local folder. If Explorer also freezes or crashes, move to Windows updates and system-file troubleshooting rather than deleting the cache repeatedly.

If what you actually need is a clean image of a webpage—not Windows Explorer previews—ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. It is separate from local thumbnail generation: use it when a developer workflow needs a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF capture of a URL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, the cURL request below captures Stripe as a WebP file:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for authentication and options. Equivalent Python code is:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

FAQ

Do thumbnails affect the original image quality?

No. A thumbnail is a generated preview; changing Explorer settings or clearing its cache does not alter the source image.

Why do some folders show previews while others show icons?

Folders can use different view layouts, contain different file types, or be managed by different storage providers. Compare a local JPG in Large icons before applying system-wide repairs.

Will restarting delete my photos?

No. Restarting Explorer or Windows refreshes the shell and its cache; it does not delete image files.

Can I use ScreenshotNeo to restore Windows thumbnails?

No. ScreenshotNeo captures web pages through an API. Windows thumbnail generation still requires the Explorer setting, cache, storage-path, and format-handler checks described above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Windows versions does this procedure cover?

The File Explorer steps apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10. Labels can vary slightly between releases, but the Options > View setting is the same.

What should I test first after changing the setting?

Use a local JPG or PNG in a Large or Extra large icons view. This separates a general Explorer problem from a cloud-path or uncommon-format problem.

Is PowerToys required for ordinary photos?

No. Standard JPG and PNG previews normally use Windows’ built-in handlers. PowerToys is relevant to formats such as SVG, PDF, G-code, BGCODE, STL, and QOI.
