PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo save one still frame from a video on Windows, pause the video at the exact moment you want, press Windows logo key + Shift + S, choose a snip mode, and drag over the video. The frame is copied to the clipboard and opened in Snipping Tool, where you can edit, save, or share it. Use Windows logo key + PrtScn when you need the entire screen saved automatically. Do not use Windows logo key + Shift + R for this task: that shortcut records a video clip rather than saving a single frame.
Capture one video frame with Snipping Tool
This method works for a video playing in a browser, media player, or another desktop window. It captures what is visible on your display, so pause first; otherwise the image may contain a neighboring frame.
- Pause the video. Use the player’s pause control at the desired moment. If the player has frame-step or single-frame controls, use them to fine-tune the position.
- Open the still-image overlay. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The screen dims and Snipping Tool displays its capture controls.
- Choose a capture mode. Rectangular snip is usually best for a video frame. You can also choose freeform, window, or full-screen still capture.
- Select the frame. Drag around the video image. Include only the picture area if you do not want browser tabs, player controls, or surrounding content.
- Save or paste the result. The snip is copied to the clipboard and appears in Snipping Tool. Press Ctrl+V in an image editor, document, chat, or email to paste it. In Snipping Tool, use the save command or press Ctrl+S to save the open snip.
Before saving, check the preview at 100% zoom. A selection that includes the player timeline or browser chrome will preserve those pixels exactly as captured.
Choose the shortcut that matches your output
| Shortcut or method | Output | Capture scope | Where it goes | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows + Shift + S (Snipping Tool) | Still image | Selected region, window, freeform area, or full screen | Snipping Tool and clipboard; save manually | One frame with little surrounding content |
| Windows + PrtScn | Still image | Entire screen | PicturesScreenshots |
A quick full-screen capture |
| Windows + Shift + R | Video clip | Selected screen region | Handled in Snipping Tool after recording | Recording motion, not extracting one still frame |
For a single frame, Windows + Shift + S gives you control over the crop. Windows + PrtScn is faster when the whole desktop is acceptable. Windows + Shift + R is the wrong tool if your deliverable is an image.

Pause before opening the overlay
Opening the snipping overlay after pausing avoids timing errors. The official Windows instructions describe the capture controls, not the pause or frame-step controls of every video player, so those controls vary by application.
Crop tightly
Use rectangular snip and start at one corner of the displayed video. Keep browser tabs, address bars, subtitles, and playback buttons outside the rectangle unless they are part of the evidence you need.
Use the player’s largest practical view
Maximizing the player or using its full-screen view can give the frame more pixels. Confirm that the player remains visible when the snipping overlay appears; some applications change their controls when the pointer moves.
Save in an appropriate format
Snipping Tool saves the image you captured. Choose a lossless format such as PNG when text or interface details matter; use JPEG when a smaller file is more important and minor compression is acceptable. The shortcut itself does not create extra video resolution—the result cannot contain more detail than was displayed.

Capture the entire screen automatically
Press Windows logo key + PrtScn to capture the full display as a still image. Windows saves the result in the PicturesScreenshots subfolder. This is useful when you need the player, captions, or surrounding application context, but it also records everything else visible on that screen.
If your keyboard labels the key differently (for example, PrtSc), use the key that performs Print Screen on that device. On some compact keyboards, an Fn modifier may be required by the hardware; that behavior is keyboard-specific rather than a different Snipping Tool mode.
When the image is black or blank
Windows desktop screenshot documentation does not guarantee successful capture of every protected video stream, player application, or hardware-accelerated playback path. A black rectangle can therefore be a limitation of the content or rendering path, not a cropping mistake.
- Confirm that the video is actually paused and visible before pressing the shortcut.
- Try a normal windowed view instead of the player’s exclusive full-screen mode.
- Capture a non-protected, locally available source if you have permission to do so.
- Check the player’s own support guidance for protected playback or hardware-acceleration behavior.
There is no universal fix established for every black or blank capture. Do not bypass digital-rights controls or copy content you are not authorized to reproduce.

Windows edition and support considerations
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool support material covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; the shortcut may still function on an installed system, but security and feature support are no longer current after that date.
Windows 10/11 N editions
Microsoft states that the Snipping Tool screen recording feature is unavailable on Windows 10/11 N editions. That limitation concerns the video-recording feature opened with Windows + Shift + R. The still-image workflow with Windows + Shift + S is the relevant option for a single frame, subject to the normal display and protected-content limitations.
Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo
If the frame is from a publicly reachable webpage rather than a local video file, ScreenshotNeo can render that page and return an image through one HTTP request. It is a website screenshot API, not a tool for extracting frames from a protected streaming service or a video file that exists only on your PC. Use the Windows method above when the video is already playing locally; use the API when you need repeatable captures of a web page.
ScreenshotNeo supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, and PDF output, full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, device and viewport choices, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, cookies, headers, user agents, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching with a chosen TTL, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Its parameter names are compatible with those used by other screenshot APIs, which can simplify a migration.

Before capture, it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Cost and operational notes
The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans are Starter ($5 for 3,000), Growth ($15 for 15,000), Pro ($39 for 60,000), Scale ($99 for 250,000), and Business ($249 for 1,000,000). Yearly billing provides two months free, and every feature is included on every plan. For a one-off local frame, Snipping Tool remains simpler; for automated page captures, the API avoids maintaining a browser and reports whether a request was billed.

Troubleshooting checklist
The shortcut does nothing
- Press the Windows logo key, Shift, and S together, then release them; do not hold PrtScn for this mode.
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu and try its New capture control.
- On a managed computer, ask your administrator whether keyboard shortcuts or Snipping Tool are restricted.
The capture includes too much
- Choose rectangular snip instead of full-screen or window mode.
- Drag from corner to corner around only the displayed video.
- Discard the first snip and repeat after moving the pointer away from player controls.
The image was captured but cannot be found
Windows + Shift + S places the result in Snipping Tool and the clipboard; it does not use the automatic PicturesScreenshots path. Open the Snipping Tool notification or app, then press Ctrl+S and select a location. The automatic folder applies to Windows + PrtScn.

The frame is blurry
Increase the player size before pausing, capture at the display’s native scaling, and avoid enlarging the saved image afterward. A screenshot records displayed pixels; it cannot restore detail removed by low source resolution, motion blur, or compression.
The video moves while selecting
Pause again, wait for the player controls to settle, and immediately press Windows + Shift + S. If the player resumes when it loses focus, consult that player’s pause or focus settings; Snipping Tool has no universal control over individual players.
Quick decision guide
- One visible frame: pause, then use Windows + Shift + S and rectangular snip.
- Whole desktop context: use Windows + PrtScn.
- A moving excerpt: use Windows + Shift + R, remembering that the result is a video clip.
- Automated captures of a public webpage: use ScreenshotNeo’s API or MCP server.
- Protected or inaccessible playback: expect that a desktop screenshot may be black or blank; use an authorized source and the player’s supported export options.
