Why I Use Kubuntu Instead of Linux Mint or Ubuntu

Kubuntu is Ubuntu with the KDE Plasma desktop. This guide covers what Plasma documents, how it compares with Ubuntu and Linux Mint, what the anecdotal claims do and do not show, and which release to install.

The distribution in question is Kubuntu. It is Ubuntu with the KDE Plasma desktop in place of Ubuntu’s default, so the case for choosing it over Linux Mint or Ubuntu comes down to the desktop you will use every day. If you want Plasma’s layout and its depth of settings, Kubuntu is worth a serious trial. If you already like Ubuntu’s GNOME desktop or Mint’s Cinnamon, switching gains you less than the enthusiasm around Kubuntu suggests.

What Kubuntu actually is

The official Kubuntu website describes the system as an operating system that combines the power of Ubuntu with the KDE Plasma desktop. In practice you get Ubuntu’s base, its package archive, and its release schedule, with Plasma on top instead of Ubuntu’s default desktop. That shared base is why most Ubuntu-oriented guidance transfers to Kubuntu, and why the desktop is the difference you will notice first.

The case rests on the desktop

Nick Lewis, writing in a How-To Geek article syndicated by Yahoo Tech on September 16, 2026, says his go-to Linux distribution is Kubuntu and argues that Plasma’s familiar default layout and flexibility make it suitable for newcomers and for people who like to customize their desktop. That is his assessment of his own experience, not a measured result. What can be checked is what KDE documents Plasma to do, which is set out below.

Discover for managing applications

KDE’s Plasma page describes Discover as the tool for managing applications on the desktop. It is the place to browse, install, and update software without dropping to the terminal, which matters most for readers who are new to Linux.

KRunner for launching and quick tasks

KRunner is Plasma’s search-and-run bar. KDE documents it for launching applications and handling other quick tasks from one entry point, so you rarely need to hunt through menus.

Settings for hardware, software, and workspaces

KDE documents extensive settings covering hardware, software, and the workspace itself. The depth of this configuration is the main reason Plasma appeals to people who want to adjust their desktop rather than accept a fixed layout.

The performance claim is anecdotal

The article says Kubuntu performs beautifully on a Surface Laptop 4. That is one user’s report on one device. No independent benchmark compares it with Mint or Ubuntu on that hardware, and nothing here predicts how it will run on your machine. Treat the report as a reason to try the system, then judge it on your own hardware, paying particular attention to graphics, Wi-Fi, and suspend and resume.

Ubuntu tutorials and packages: what transfers

The article also says Ubuntu tutorials and DEB packages generally work on Kubuntu. Because both systems share Ubuntu’s base, command-line instructions and DEB packages are likely to apply, but that was not verified package by package. Desktop instructions are the weak point. A guide that tells you to open GNOME Settings or install a GNOME extension will not map onto Plasma’s System Settings, so read desktop steps as a description of the approach rather than a list of clicks.

Choosing a release and installing it

  1. Open the official Kubuntu website and go to its download page.
  2. Confirm that the stable release listed is 26.04 LTS. As of the homepage listing on 7 October 2026, that is the current long-term release.
  3. Do not use the 26.10 beta on a machine you depend on. The site describes it as a pre-release intended for testing rather than production.
  4. Verify the ISO checksum against the value published alongside the download before writing the image to a USB drive.
  5. Boot the USB in live-session mode and check Wi-Fi, display, audio, and trackpad before choosing to install.

Who should choose Kubuntu, and who should not

  • Choose Kubuntu if you want KDE Plasma’s layout and its depth of settings.
  • Choose it if you expect to customize the desktop and want the built-in tools KDE documents.
  • Stay with Ubuntu or Linux Mint if you already know their desktops and do not want to relearn your workflow.
  • Avoid the 26.10 beta on any system you use for daily work.
  • Test your own hardware from the live session before relying on the anecdote about the Surface Laptop 4.
