Wireless Android Auto removes the need to plug in, but that convenience only pays off if the connection works smoothly in your car. I switched back to a cable because, for me, the extra pairing and connection hassle outweighed going cord-free. That is a personal trade-off, not evidence that wireless Android Auto is unreliable for everyone.
What wireless Android Auto needs
Android Auto brings supported navigation, calling, messaging, and media apps to a compatible car display. It is integrated into Android phones; Google says there is no separate Android Auto app to install for use on the car display. Google’s getting-started guidance distinguishes wired and wireless requirements.

For wireless projection, Google’s general requirements include a compatible phone with an active data plan and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, plus a compatible car or stereo. Google says wireless projection works with phones running Android 11.0; 5 GHz use in cars is also subject to additional regulatory requirements in the EU. Check your phone and vehicle manufacturer’s compatibility information rather than assuming that a USB port or a recent phone is enough.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to pair wirelessly
- Park the car and turn on its infotainment system.
- On your phone, make sure Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services are enabled.
- Follow the pairing prompts on both the phone and the car display. Initial wireless setup uses Bluetooth pairing.
- After pairing, Android Auto should start within a few seconds. The display may still ask you to tap or confirm a prompt.
These are Google’s setup steps, not a guarantee that every connection problem will be fixed by repeating them. See Google’s wireless setup instructions.

Why I prefer the cable
My decision is about the experience in my own car: I would rather connect a cable than deal with a wireless connection that does not feel dependable to me. The official guidance explains compatibility and troubleshooting, but it does not establish how often wireless connections fail or show that wired Android Auto is more reliable across drivers and vehicles. Nor does it quantify any battery-use or performance difference. Those outcomes should not be assumed from one driver’s experience.
Wired Android Auto is a practical fallback if you prefer a direct connection. Google’s wired requirements include a compatible car, a phone running Android 9.0 or later with an active data plan, and a high-quality USB cable. The cable needs to transfer data and work with both your phone and vehicle; a charging-only cable will not provide the needed connection.

If Android Auto will not connect
For a new wireless setup
- Confirm that both the phone and car or stereo support wireless Android Auto.
- Try setup while parked with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services turned on.
- If problems continue, check Google’s compatibility and connection guidance or contact the vehicle manufacturer.
For a wired connection that used to work
- Try a different high-quality USB data cable. Google says replacing the cable will likely fix some wired connection failures.
- Check that Android Auto is enabled in the vehicle’s settings.
- Restart the infotainment system.
Google’s wired connection troubleshooting guidance covers these steps. A cable replacement addresses a wired connection problem; it is not a fix for wireless pairing issues.
Should you try a wireless adapter?
An adapter is only relevant if you still want wireless projection and your car already supports wired Android Auto. Motorola says its MA1 is for vehicles with factory-fitted wired Android Auto, with compatibility dependent on the automaker’s USB and Android Auto implementation; its support page names Mitsubishi Motors as incompatible. Motorola’s MA1 support page has its compatibility guidance.

AAWireless likewise describes its dongle as a way to add wireless use to wired-only Android Auto and says it is not compatible with cars that already have native wireless Android Auto. Check the exact vehicle and phone before buying; an adapter does not remove the underlying compatibility requirement. See the AAWireless FAQ.
