That is my experience, not proof that fewer services automatically make a server more reliable. What changed was the amount of ongoing work I chose to take on: each app needs to be understood, updated, secured, backed up, and recoverable.
What changed when I stopped installing every interesting app?
I began treating an app as a continuing obligation, not a one-time install. A service might be easy to launch, but it still needs an owner: someone has to know what it does, who depends on it, what data it holds, how it gets updated, and how to bring it back after a failure.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That shift made it easier to pause before adding another dashboard, media tool, or personal project. I am not claiming a measured improvement in uptime or a magic limit on the number of services. The practical benefit was reducing the number of things I had to keep track of and deciding more deliberately what deserved a place in the stack.
How to audit the apps already running
AWS Well-Architected guidance for workloads recommends inventorying software and architecture, identifying components that need updates, and understanding how they are maintained. Adapted for a home server, that becomes a simple inventory—not a formal score or an AWS-prescribed home-lab checklist.

- Service and purpose: What does it do, and what recurring need does it meet?
- Users and dependents: Who relies on it, and what happens if the experimental host goes offline?
- Data: What does it store, and how much would losing it matter?
- Updates: How is it updated, and do I understand the steps and recovery path?
- Access: Is it reachable from outside the home network, and does it need its current permissions?
- Recovery: Is there a backup, and do I know how to restore the service and its data?
- Use and overlap: When did I last use it, and does another retained service already meet the same need?
These questions help distinguish a useful service from one that is merely installed. A service used rarely may still be essential, while a frequently opened one may be redundant; frequency is a prompt for judgment, not the only criterion.
When to keep, remove, or defer an app
Keep it when the need and recovery plan are clear
Keep services that solve a real recurring problem or that other people in the household depend on. For those, match the reliability and recovery plan to the consequences of an outage or lost data. A household-critical service should not be treated as disposable just because it runs on a home server.
Remove it when the obligation outweighs the value
If an app duplicates another service, has no clear current use, or holds data you cannot sensibly protect and recover, removal may be the cleaner choice. Before deleting it, check whether anyone else relies on it and whether you need to export or preserve its data.

Defer experiments until there is a use case
When an app looks interesting but you cannot yet name the need it will meet—or the time you can give it—record the idea and wait. Deferring is not a permanent rejection; it prevents curiosity alone from creating another update, access-control, and recovery obligation.

The integration of dual 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports (powered by Realtek RTL8125 controller) makes this compact computer an exceptional hardware choice for tech enthusiasts. Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.
Fewer services still need security boundaries
Pruning reduces the number of services you choose to manage; it does not make the remaining ones safe by default. Docker warns that its daemon can grant powerful control over the host. Docker Docs puts the risk plainly: “This daemon requires root privileges unless you opt-in to Rootless mode, and you should therefore be aware of some important details.” Only trusted users should control the daemon, and container access to host directories should be granted carefully.
The UK National Cyber Security Centre recommends separating applications and restricting privilege. Avoid privileged containers unless a specific need justifies them, and do not give an app broad host access just to make setup easier. Docker also recommends limiting daemon API access to a trusted network or VPN; explicitly exposed API endpoints should be protected with HTTPS and certificates.
Resource controls can help contain impact: Docker describes Linux control groups as a way to account for and limit memory, CPU, and disk I/O, which can help prevent one container from exhausting a resource and disrupting the system. That capability is a safeguard, not evidence that every additional app will cause an outage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUpdates are part of running an app
Update practices depend on the software and how it is packaged; there is no single interval that fits every self-hosted service. AWS guidance emphasizes defining an update process, maintaining an inventory, understanding how components are updated, and using automation where it can reduce manual effort and mistakes. That is general operational advice adapted from AWS workload guidance, not a home-server requirement.

For containers, Docker Docs says, “Docker images are immutable.” A running image is a snapshot; immutability does not make it current. Docker recommends choosing a trusted, small base image and rebuilding regularly with updated dependencies. It also recommends making containers ephemeral where practical, so they can be replaced with minimal setup and configuration. The NCSC similarly says containers suit applications that are replaced with new versions rather than updated in place, and advises prompt security updates to the host operating system and runtime.
For Home Assistant specifically, its security checklist says to keep the system up to date with each monthly release. That project-specific guidance should not be treated as a universal monthly schedule for every app.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Back up what matters and know how to restore it
A backup is useful only if it covers the data and configuration you need to recover the service. Home Assistant recommends centralizing sensitive data and remembering to back it up, and notes that its secrets.yaml file is not encrypted. Protect backup copies accordingly, and decide where they belong based on your own recovery needs.
For each service you keep, identify what must be restored and how. A written recovery path can be as simple as recording the data location, configuration, and sequence of steps needed to bring the service back. If losing the information would matter, verify that the backup can actually be restored rather than assuming that a successful backup job is enough.

Remote access deserves a separate decision
Making a service reachable from outside your home changes its exposure and the work needed to protect it. Home Assistant advises against exposing its instance directly to the internet and documents secure remote-access options for that product: Home Assistant Cloud, TLS/SSL using Duck DNS and Let’s Encrypt, a VPN, or an SSH tunnel. These are Home Assistant-specific options, not a blanket recommendation for every application.
For any service, ask whether remote access is needed at all. If it is, understand which access method is in use, limit it to the people and systems that need it, and include that configuration in your maintenance and recovery notes.
A simpler stack is a deliberate trade-off
Keeping fewer apps can mean fewer separate maintenance and security obligations, but it is not a guarantee of better reliability. The useful outcome is a stack whose services have a clear purpose, an appropriate access boundary, a workable update process, and a recovery path proportionate to their importance. That is a more sustainable target than installing every promising project the moment it appears.
