In this first installment, ALISAM SRIVARDHAN explains how that lesson shaped a proposed platform for finding compatible travel companions and planning trips together—not booking tickets or hotels.
What went wrong with my first project
In an article published on August 30, 2026, ALISAM SRIVARDHAN describes LexAssist, a solo project attempted during the author’s second year. The project stalled, the author says, because features accumulated before the core worked, architecture had not been thought through before coding, and security was put off. By the deadline, the result was a collection of partly working pieces without a coherent whole.

The lesson that carried into the next project became the first line of its brief: “a complete, working, secure application beats a huge, half-built one, every single time.” The point was not to avoid ambitious features, but to make a working and secure foundation the condition for adding them.
Why focus on finding travel companions?
Group-trip coordination is often spread across separate tools: a chat for conversation, a spreadsheet for expenses, and a document for the itinerary. But SRIVARDHAN identifies an earlier obstacle: finding people whose destination, dates, budget, and travel style fit together.

That distinction sets TravelMate’s intended boundary. It is not presented as another way to book a hotel or train ticket; the author argues that existing apps already handle bookings well. TravelMate instead aims to help people find a compatible group and coordinate the trip once they decide to travel together.
How TravelMate is meant to work
The proposed product loop begins with discovering trips and travelers, then assessing compatibility, requesting to join, and forming a group. Members would use a private shared space to coordinate through chat, itineraries, polls, and expense splitting. Safety and post-trip memories are also part of the wider concept.

A hypothetical trip request
To illustrate the kind of information that could support matching, the article gives a Goa trip example: “Goa, from Hyderabad, December 20–24, budget ₹8,000,” with interests in “adventure and beaches” and a preference for trains. This is an illustrative prompt, not a reported user request or evidence of market demand.
The engineering challenges behind the idea
SRIVARDHAN says the project was intended to demonstrate more than basic create, read, update, and delete operations. The design raises several connected challenges:

- Compatibility: deciding how to compare destinations, schedules, budgets, and travel styles.
- Group formation: handling cases such as two people trying to claim the final available place on a trip at the same time.
- Private coordination: securing real-time chat rooms and protecting group conversations.
- Safety: treating traveler safety as a product concern rather than an afterthought.
To address the risk of coding ahead of the foundations, the author says an extended “Phase 0” was devoted to architecture, database and API design, and security before implementation began. That approach directly responds to the problems described with LexAssist.
