The author of Indie Dev Log says the reason for starting SmartConvert was simple: “I want to build a product of my own.” Rather than only writing code to meet someone else’s requirements, the author wanted to take an idea from its beginning through launch and find out whether people would use it.

Why build a product instead of only coding for others?

In the essay, the author describes the limits of working only on other people’s apps and services: the work may involve implementing features, fixing bugs, preparing releases, maintaining software, and adapting to changing requirements. The author wanted to experience the whole product journey, including the decisions and uncertainties that continue after the code is written.

That means finding out whether an idea is useful to anyone, how to reach potential users, and what it takes to keep a product going. The motivation is not presented as a rejection of programming work for others; it is a desire to own the process from idea to launch and adoption.

What is SmartConvert?

SmartConvert is the project the author chose to build. The essay describes it as an online tools website focused mainly on file tools, PDF tools, and developer tools. The author acknowledges that the idea is not groundbreaking and says the site does not yet have many daily users. No user count is given.

The project is therefore presented as an early attempt, not as an established success story. The essay does not report a verified traffic trend, revenue figure, or final outcome.

What does the author want to find out?

The project is also an experiment in whether one person can use contemporary AI tools and low-cost cloud services to build something people actually use. The essay raises several questions without claiming to have answered them:

  • What happens after launch if only a few users arrive?
  • Does SEO bring an audience to the product?
  • Is paid advertising worth trying?
  • Where does the first dollar of product revenue come from?
  • How much work does building a product involve beyond writing code?

These are open questions in the author’s account, not conclusions about the effectiveness of SEO, advertising, AI tools, or cloud services.

What the public log is meant to document

The author plans to write about what gets built and why, what the project costs, how many users arrive, what goes wrong, and what happens in the end. Potential subjects include AI coding tools, Cloudflare, AI platforms, browser extensions, and other developer tools. The essay does not give a project budget, a traffic series, or a later result.

That focus on the work before success is central to the project’s premise: documenting the uncertain middle rather than presenting a polished account after the outcome is known. The available essay identifies its publication and byline as Indie Dev Log; it does not provide a personal name to attach to the author’s statement.

What this account does—and does not—show

The essay explains one programmer’s motivation and the questions behind starting SmartConvert. It does not establish that solo product building will succeed, that AI makes it possible to build a sustainable business alone, or that SEO or advertising will produce growth. Those outcomes remain questions the author hopes to explore through the project.
