Before you toss an unfamiliar cable, charger, or gadget, take a photo and search it with Google Lens. Lens can surface likely product matches and help read labels, but a visual resemblance is only a lead: check the item’s model markings and manufacturer documentation before buying a replacement, selling it, or deciding it is ready for recycling.
How to identify an old gadget or cable with Google Lens
- Photograph the whole item. Use Lens on a live camera view, a saved image, or a screenshot. Include enough of the object to show its shape and any distinctive features. If the result is unclear, take another photo close to the label, connector, logo, or printed model text. Google Lens supports searches using what your camera sees or an image.
- Look for text and barcodes. If a brand or model number is visible, use Lens to copy the text or search the image. Android’s guide gives the example of identifying an appliance model number to find manuals or support; it also describes using a barcode to find product information. Android’s Google-published guide explains these uses.
- Turn a broad visual match into a specific search. Add the copied model number or brand to a text search if Lens returns several similar products. Compare the item’s connector shape, label, and model details with the manufacturer’s documentation. Lens does not publish an accuracy guarantee, so do not treat a look-alike result as proof that you have identified the exact item.
- Choose what to do with it. If it still works, consider whether you can keep, reuse, sell, or donate it. If recycling is the right choice, check the current accepted-items list and whether the program serves your location.
What a Lens result can—and cannot—tell you
Lens is useful for finding product information from an image and extracting clues such as readable text. A model number can lead you to a manual or support page; a barcode may lead to product information. Those clues help narrow down what an item is, but an image match alone does not establish compatibility, electrical capability, or safety. Verify the exact model through markings on the item and documentation from its manufacturer before ordering a part or relying on it.

Where to recycle old chargers and cables
Accepted items and coverage depend on the program, so check its current rules rather than assuming every electronics collection takes every cable or accessory. Google’s U.S. recycling program lists chargers, power supplies, and cables among accepted accessories, subject to its current list and program availability. Google Store Help’s U.S. recycling page provides its current information about accepted items and mail-in or drop-off options; the list can change.

Clear personal data from devices first
If the item stores personal information, factory reset it and clear its data before recycling. Follow the device manufacturer’s instructions for the specific model. Google’s recycling guidance also recommends resetting devices and clearing personal data. Google’s U.S. recycling guidance explains this step.

Some cables look alike but serve different purposes, and a photo cannot establish their electrical specifications or whether they are safe to use. If the label is missing or the manufacturer’s documentation does not confirm a match, do not guess when choosing a replacement or deciding that an unknown item is safe. You can keep it aside while you seek a more reliable identification, or ask your local recycling provider how to handle an unidentified electronic item.
