I built Mathsway as a free way to check derivatives, integrals, and limits without creating an account—and to show the reasoning behind each result. The project is designed to run its calculations on the user’s device rather than send expressions to a backend, though that architecture and the solver’s capabilities are described by the Mathsway team and have not been independently verified here.
Why build another calculus solver?
A student who just wants to check a derivative before an exam should be able to enter an expression and see how the result follows. I wanted Mathsway to serve that need without requiring an account, putting steps behind a paywall, or sending entered expressions to a server.

The goal was not simply to return an answer. As the Mathsway team puts it, “The biggest lesson from this project is that nobody really wants only the answer.” For a learner, a result is more useful when it also shows which rule was applied and how the expression changed.

The project article describes Mathsway as a free calculator for several core calculus tasks, plus selected equation solving. These are reported features, not independently tested results.
#1 Best Overall
- Fundamental, two-line calculator that combines statistics and advanced scientific functions for high school math and science
- Two-line display shows the entry and calculated result at the same time for easy understanding of the calculation
- Fraction features, conversions, and basic scientific and trigonometric functions
- Solar and battery powered
- Approved for use on SAT, ACT and AP exams
- Derivatives: applies product, quotient, and chain rules, with separate steps.
- Integrals: handles definite and indefinite integrals.
- Multiple integrals: includes double and triple integrals and coordinate changes.
- Limits: covers limits at a point or infinity, indeterminate forms, and L’Hôpital’s rule.
- Equations: includes linear equations, quadratics, and systems.
Why show the steps, not just the expression?
A final expression can confirm a result, but it does not necessarily help a student learn the method. The intended Mathsway format makes each step identify a rule, display the new expression, and explain what changed. That turns a calculator output into something closer to a worked solution.
There is another challenge beyond obtaining a mathematically correct expression: presenting it in a form that is easy to follow. The project article says simplifying the output so it resembles what a teacher might write took substantial effort. Symbolic correctness and a readable explanation are related, but they are not the same thing; the article does not establish that every result matches classroom conventions.
Rank #2
- View multiple calculations at the same time: Compare results and explore patterns on-screen with the MultiView display that supports up to four lines
- See math exactly as it appears in textbooks: Display math expressions, symbols and stacked fractions exactly the way they appear in textbooks — no need to adapt to a technical syntax; provides quick access to frequently used functions
- Scientific notation output: View scientific notation with the proper superscripted exponents and see the output in scientific notation
- Explore (x,y) table of values: Students can easily explore an (x,y) table of values for a given function automatically or by entering specific x values
- The TI-30XS MultiView scientific calculator is ideal for general math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Statistics, general science, Biology and Chemistry
What running calculations in the browser changes
The Mathsway team describes the site as a static Next.js website, with pages generated at build time and served from a CDN. In that account, the calculation happens on the user’s device. The team summarizes the approach as: “Everything runs in the browser.”
Keeping computation on the device is intended to avoid a network round trip for the calculation and remove the need to operate an application server for it. It also means a user’s expression need not be sent to a calculation backend, according to the team’s description. This is not an independent privacy audit, and the account does not establish whether other parts of the site make network requests.
Rank #3
- 10-digit display; for general math, pre-algebra, algebra 1 and 2, trigonometry and biology
- Performs trigonometric functions, logarithms, roots, powers, reciprocals, and factorials
- Also add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions; 1-variable statistics (mean / standard deviation)
- Conversions: fractions/decimals, degrees/radians/grads, DMS/decimal/degrees, and polar/rectangular
- Battery-powered; includes slide case
The tradeoff: symbolic math can be demanding
Browser-based computation has a cost: symbolic mathematics can be heavy, especially on slower laptops and phones. The project article says the math engine loads only when needed and computation runs away from the main thread, an approach intended to keep the interface responsive on less powerful devices.
No latency figures, device tests, or compatibility results are provided, so those design choices should not be read as a measured speed guarantee. The approach is a tradeoff: less dependence on a calculation server, while the user’s device does the mathematical work.

Why a solver should admit when it cannot solve something
Some integrals do not have elementary antiderivatives, and some expressions may be too complex for the solver. The Mathsway team’s stated principle is to show a clear failure message—such as “no elementary antiderivative found”—rather than invent an answer.

That is an important standard for a learning tool: a confident-looking but incorrect result can teach the wrong method. The project article gives no independent accuracy rate or edge-case testing, so it does not establish how often the solver reaches that boundary or how reliable its answers are across the listed topics.
Best Value
- Natural Textbook Display presents formulas and results exactly as written in textbooks for intuitive learning.
What comes next
The Mathsway team says its plans include more worked examples, clearer explanations of rules, and additional language support, including French and Arabic. These are stated plans, not a confirmation that those additions are available now.
