Why I Built an Open-Source, E2EE-Synced Termius Alternative (and What Broke Along the Way)

Open-source SSH clients take different routes to encrypted vault sync. Here is what their project descriptions establish—and what a trustworthy account of implementation and failures still needs to show.

An open-source SSH client can sync a useful vault across devices without handing a sync provider the plaintext—but “end-to-end encrypted” is a design claim, not proof that an implementation is secure. To judge one fairly, readers need to know what it syncs, how keys are handled, what the server can see, and how the code can be inspected.

The available project information establishes a range of approaches, but it does not establish the implementation, platform support, or failure history of the first-person project implied by this title. Those details must come from that project’s own code, tests, release notes, and issue history; they cannot responsibly be invented. The landscape below shows what can be stated and what a credible engineering account still needs to demonstrate.

What an encrypted SSH vault is—and is not

An SSH client vault can include hostnames, ports, usernames, connection settings, private keys, passwords, snippets, and other workspace data. Syncing that vault means deciding which of those items leave a device, where they go, and what protection applies before they get there. A meaningful explanation should name the included and excluded data rather than use “vault sync” as if it always meant the same thing.

End-to-end encryption is intended to keep the sync service from reading the synced plaintext. That statement alone does not explain where encryption happens, how the encryption key is created and stored, how a new device joins, or how a user recovers data after losing a device. Nor does a project’s description of its encryption amount to an independent security audit. Readers should be able to examine the implementation and its documented recovery behavior.

How open-source projects handle sync

There is no single open-source alternative architecture. Some projects describe a vendor- or project-connected sync destination; others offer a user-owned backend, an account-free local approach, or a server the user runs. These are project descriptions, not independent assessments of their security, completeness, or ease of operation.

Project What its project materials describe Coverage or qualification stated in the available materials
Voltius Local-first SSH/SFTP/serial client with end-to-end encrypted sync; import from Termius; sync destinations described as a private GitHub Gist or user-owned Cloudflare/S3 storage. Windows, Linux, macOS, and Android are listed. Android is described as an early preview, with some platform-only features gated off.
Oryxis Rust desktop SSH client with a local encrypted credential vault, no cloud account, and end-to-end encrypted sync payloads. The repository identifies its license as AGPL-3.0. The available project description does not establish a complete recovery process.
unissh Optional end-to-end encrypted vault sync through a server operated by the user. Self-hosting means the user operates the sync service; the available description does not establish the full operational or recovery requirements.
Submarine Open-source SSH/SFTP client with port forwarding, folder mirroring, and encrypted profile sync. Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android are listed.
Zync Open-source desktop SSH client whose repository compares its feature set with Termius and other tools. The search-result description calls it MIT-licensed and free; verify the repository’s current license and pricing before relying on those time-sensitive details.
Terminator Open-source desktop SSH client and server for encrypted vault sync, with self-hosted-server and offline options. The available description does not establish its complete platform coverage or recovery behavior.
Termius The vendor says it provides end-to-end encrypted vaults and cannot access users’ plaintext data. This is Termius’s own security statement, not an independent audit.

These options make different trade-offs. A hosted destination can reduce the work of operating infrastructure; user-owned storage gives the user control of the destination; and a self-hosted server puts service operation in the user’s hands. The available descriptions do not support a measured comparison of setup time, maintenance effort, or security. Those depend on the documented setup and the implementation in question.

What the “Termius alternative” label leaves out

Alternative does not mean feature parity. Project descriptions differ in whether they mention mobile clients, SFTP, serial access, tunnels or port forwarding, folder mirroring, and import or export. A useful comparison starts with the reader’s actual workflow: a desktop-only host list is a different need from a vault shared with a phone, or a client that also handles file transfers and port forwarding.

Platform labels also do not communicate maturity by themselves. Voltius explicitly calls Android an early preview and notes that some features are gated off. A platform being listed should not be read as evidence that every feature is available there.

What a first-person account must show

A title promising what broke is valuable only when the failures are grounded in the project’s own records. External product pages cannot establish what the author built, what failed, or how a bug was fixed. For each incident, a sound engineering account should provide enough detail to distinguish an observed failure from a design risk or a test-only issue.

  • Expected behavior: State what the feature was supposed to do, such as preserve a host entry across two devices.
  • Observed symptom: Describe what actually happened, and identify whether it occurred in production, a reproducible local test, or only a test harness.
  • Reproduction context: Give the affected version, operating system, device, and minimal steps without exposing real hostnames, usernames, keys, tokens, or vault contents.
  • Responsible layer: Identify whether the defect involved encryption, key handling, storage, conflict resolution, SSH, the user interface, packaging, or platform integration.
  • Fix and residual risk: Link the fix to a commit, issue, release note, or test, and say whether any limitation remains.

This discipline matters especially for sync bugs. A missing update might arise from a write that never reached storage, a conflict rule that selected the wrong version, or a client that failed to decrypt a valid payload. Calling all three “encryption problems” obscures the cause and makes the fix hard to evaluate.

How to evaluate the security claim

Before entrusting a client with credentials, look for a concrete account of its security boundary. The project should explain which data is encrypted on the device, how keys are derived or stored, what metadata the sync provider can observe, how devices are added, and what happens when the user forgets a password or loses access to a device. The available project descriptions do not establish all of these details for the listed tools.

Open-source code improves inspectability, but it is not itself evidence that a design is correct or has been audited. Likewise, a commercial service is not automatically unencrypted: Termius says its vaults are end-to-end encrypted and that it cannot read plaintext. Compare specific designs and verifiable documentation rather than assuming that a project’s licensing model settles its security.
