Why I Built a Local-First Visual Builder Instead of Another Cloud SaaS

Kayra describes NotCodes as a local-first desktop IDE experiment: a visual canvas edits TypeScript and writes standard-code projects to local files.

I built NotCodes as an experiment in a different kind of visual development: a desktop IDE where a visual canvas edits local TypeScript and writes changes to files on your machine. The idea is to pair visual layout control with code ownership, rather than make a hosted service the center of the workflow.

What NotCodes is designed to do

NotCodes combines visual layout editing with a local TypeScript abstract syntax tree (AST) parser. In the model I describe, edits made on the canvas are parsed and written deterministically to local disk instead of being sent to a remote compilation server. The project is presented as a desktop IDE experiment for React, React Native, and Node.js workflows.

The intended output is ordinary code for those ecosystems, without a proprietary runtime wrapper. That is a design goal stated for NotCodes, not an independent assessment of every generated project or its behavior in every workflow.

Why put the editing loop on the user’s machine?

A local-first architecture makes the project files the center of the workflow. The stated aim is to let users keep their files, work with local tools, and choose where and how to deploy, rather than making a remote service necessary for parsing, building, and rendering.

I also expect local processing to reduce the infrastructure costs associated with running a hosted builder. That is an intended benefit, not a measured cost comparison: the post provides no figures for operating costs, subscription savings, or the resources required to run NotCodes locally.

Why not make prompts the primary interface?

Prompt-to-UI tools can be useful for generating an initial interface, but my argument is that a spatial canvas offers more deterministic control over individual layout decisions. As a project grows, I believe granular positioning and wiring application state can be difficult to manage through prompts alone.

  • Refresh rate: A smooth, tear-free experience with AMD FreeSync Premium (refresh rate up to 120Hz) and an ultra-low 0.03ms response time create a captivating experience for work and play.
  • Vivid colors: Enjoy vibrant, true-to-life colors with 99% sRGB and 95% DCI-P3 coverage. The VA panel with 3000:1 contrast ratio and HDR readiness delivers stunning depth, detail and realism.
  • Re-engineered sound quality: Enjoy more detailed sound with spacious audio featuring greater output power, deeper frequency response and more decibel range than the previous generation.
  • Easy connectivity: Keep your desk organized and clutter-free with a single USB-C cable (up to 65W power delivery).

This is a design preference, not the result of a comparative study. The post includes no benchmark showing that visual editing is always faster or more accurate than prompt-based development, or that one approach works better for every project.

What I think cloud builders trade away

My critique is that many modern visual builders depend on proprietary browser runtimes, recurring cloud fees, or exported code I consider difficult to maintain. I see that combination as a potential source of lock-in: users may find it harder to leave if their work depends on a hosted environment or a product-specific runtime.

  • 1ms MPRT: Colors fade and illuminate instantly with a 1ms response time, eliminating ghosting and piecing together precise imagery during action-packed scenes and gaming.
  • Luminous Backcover Lights: A colorful LED light illuminates the back cover of the monitor, delivering a uniquely modern design.
  • WQHD Resolution: At 5 million pixels, Wide Quad HD Resolution (3440 x 1440) display resolution provides you with the next level of refined, and detailed picture over the current 1080P standard.
  • 21:9 Ultrawide: See more and do more with an ultrawide monitor. 21:9 provides you with 30% more screen space versus the conventional monitor. With an ultrawide resolution of 3440 x 1440, expand your performance and productivity.

That is my interpretation of the ecosystem, not proof that all or most competing builders work this way. There is no named competitor comparison or independent code-quality assessment in the post, and cloud services can also provide convenience that a local tool does not quantify.

The architectural tradeoff

The choice is not simply visual editing versus code. It is also a choice about where the development loop runs, who controls the resulting files, and whether a project depends on a hosted service or proprietary layer.

Question NotCodes as described Cloud-builder approach in my critique
Where are edits processed? Locally, through a TypeScript AST parser, with changes written to local disk. Described broadly as relying on remote or browser-based services; no specific competitor is named.
Who has the files? The intended workflow keeps files on the user’s machine. Potential dependence on a hosted environment is the concern raised; the post does not establish how any named product handles files.
What code is produced? The stated goal is standard React, React Native, and Node.js code without a proprietary runtime wrapper. The post criticizes some exported code as hard to maintain but supplies no comparative code analysis.
What is the cost model? Local processing is intended to reduce infrastructure costs; no measured savings or operating-cost figures are provided. Cloud fees are part of the critique; no plans, prices, or product-specific figures are compared.
What kind of control is emphasized? A spatial canvas intended to provide deterministic, granular layout control. Hosted convenience is the contrast, but the post does not measure control or usability across products.

Who this experiment is for

NotCodes’ approach will make most sense to developers who want a visual editing surface but also want their project files and local workflow to remain central. It is less a claim that every hosted builder is unsuitable than a bet that local ownership and deterministic editing are worth exploring alongside hosted convenience.

Other local-first visual workflow projects show that the broader idea is not unique to NotCodes. For example, Ciaren describes local data and machine-learning workflows with Python export, and its documentation labels the initial release alpha. AppLoop describes a local-first builder for generated Next.js apps and says it is not a cloud multiplayer IDE. These are examples of different projects, not evidence for NotCodes’ specific architecture, quality, or cost claims.
