A bank statement or identity document is exactly the kind of file many people hesitate to send to an online PDF tool. The question behind this project was simple: “But what happens to that file on the server?” I built PDF Pro around a different approach: run the PDF processing in the browser, on the user’s device. That is the design I intended; it is not, by itself, independent proof that every current product workflow sends no file data to a server.
Why I wanted PDF processing to happen in the browser
I started PDF Pro because uploading sensitive documents to an online utility felt like an unnecessary risk. People use PDF tools for bank statements, identity documents and other files they may not want copied to a service provider’s servers. In my account of building the project, I describe that concern as the reason for choosing local processing.

The distinction matters: a PDF editor can be accessed through a website without necessarily sending the document itself to a remote server for processing. The intended design for PDF Pro was to have the browser do that work. That can reduce the amount of trust a user must place in a service, but the design intention and a privacy guarantee are not interchangeable.

How WebAssembly fits the design
My approach was to compile a C++ PDF-processing library so it could run through JavaScript and WebAssembly in the browser. WebAssembly lets compiled code execute in a browser environment; in this case, the architectural goal was to bring the PDF engine to the user’s device instead of sending document contents to a server to be processed. I did not name the library in the article, so there is no basis here to identify it or make claims about its specific capabilities.

This explains the design at a high level, not every detail of the application’s network behavior. The available product descriptions do not establish an audited guarantee, a browser-support matrix, offline operation, or that no file-related network request can occur in every tool or workflow.
What I expected local processing to improve
I described three intended benefits: avoiding file uploads, reducing the network delay associated with sending a document to a server and waiting for it to be processed, and avoiding server-compute costs that could support a free tool without daily caps. These are the creator’s rationale, not independently measured performance or verified current service terms. Processing locally does not automatically make every operation faster: the result still depends on the device, the document and the task.
- Less reliance on uploads: the design aims to keep document processing on the user’s device. Whether that holds for a particular current feature should be checked against its own behavior and disclosures.
- Potentially less network delay: local work avoids the upload-and-wait portion of a server workflow, but no comparative timing test is established.
- A different cost model: shifting computation to a user’s device can reduce the service’s need to process each file on its own servers. The free-access and no-daily-cap statements are product claims, not independently verified terms.
What PDF Pro says today—and why the wording deserves scrutiny
PDF Pro’s homepage currently advertises a broad set of browser-based PDF utilities and says files never leave the device, using the phrase “0 Bytes Ever Uploaded.” Those are vendor statements. The compression page also describes local processing and files never being uploaded, but elsewhere refers to uploading a PDF, server-side processing, cloud-based tools and automatic deletion from cloud storage, including a two-hour deletion statement.

- Edit PDFs with Ease. Modify text, images, and layouts directly within your PDF documents.
- Convert & Organize. Export PDFs to Word, Excel, or ePub, and organize files with ease.
- Read & Annotate. Enjoy intuitive reading modes and powerful tools to comment, highlight, and mark up PDFs.
- Create & Manage PDFs. Create new PDFs, combine multiple files, scan documents, and compress for easy sharing.
- Fill & Sign Forms. Complete forms and digitally sign documents with secure e-signature tools.
Those descriptions conflict. It would be misleading to select the strongest privacy wording and present it as a verified guarantee. If you are handling a highly sensitive file, check the disclosures for the exact feature you plan to use and, where possible, verify behavior rather than relying on a general homepage claim. A technical explanation or marketing statement is not the same as an independent security audit.
PDF size targets for Indian portals are not settled by these product pages
The original article framed PDF Pro around Indian government-portal size constraints and mentioned a 200 KB target and 150 DPI. Current compression-page copy gives different examples, including SSC use cases at 100 KB, UPSC ranges described as under 300 KB or 20–300 KB, and image-resolution reductions to 144 or 72 DPI. These are changing creator or vendor descriptions, not independently verified current requirements from SSC or UPSC.
Do not treat a product page’s example as the rule for an application. Confirm the exact file-size, page, resolution and format limits on the relevant official portal or application notice before compressing a document. If the PDF contains scanned pages, reducing image resolution can lower file size but may also make small text or stamps harder to read.

Compression can trade image quality for a smaller file
The compression page uses both “lossless” language and descriptions of image compression with DPI reduction. It says text and vector elements are retained while images may be compressed with loss. That distinction matters: preserving text and vector elements does not mean a scanned image inside the PDF is unchanged. Inspect the resulting document at readable zoom, especially signatures, fine print and official stamps, before uploading it to an application.

For PDF compression services or other online PDF editor alternatives, judge the specific feature and workflow rather than assuming all browser tools handle files the same way. Useful checks include:
- Processing location: Does the service clearly say whether file contents are processed on your device or sent to a server?
- Technical evidence: Is the claim supported by inspectable behavior or documentation, or only by marketing language? A claim alone does not establish that no file data travels over the network.
- Retention terms: If an upload occurs, what does the service say about storage and deletion, and does that apply to the feature you are using?
- Compression controls: Can you choose a size or quality level, and does the method reduce image resolution or quality?
- Capabilities and limits: Check that the needed operation is supported and review any file-size restrictions, account requirements and current pricing.
My original article named iLovePDF and Smallpdf as examples of upload-based services, but that mention is not a current, independent comparison of either service’s feature set or data handling. Check each provider’s present policies and technical evidence before deciding where to process a sensitive document.
