Why I Built a Browser-Based Markdown Converter—and What Privacy Really Means

A browser-based Markdown converter can keep document conversion on your device, but privacy claims depend on the actual data flow. Here’s what to check.

Markdown conversion can run entirely on your device, but calling a tool “100% in-browser” or “privacy-first” is meaningful only when its data flow is clear. This account explains the design goal and the checks readers should expect; it does not claim unverified details about a particular converter’s implementation, features, or testing.

Why build a Markdown converter?

Markdown is plain text with lightweight conventions for structuring documents. The CommonMark project describes it as a format based on conventions from email and Usenet. Its appeal is practical: a document remains readable as text while headings, lists, links, and other structure can be rendered for easier reading or publishing. CommonMark

A converter is useful when that text needs to become another representation, such as rendered HTML. Keeping conversion in the browser can avoid sending the document to a remote conversion service. That is a design goal, not by itself proof of how any specific converter works.

What “in-browser” and “privacy-first” should mean

For a converter to substantiate a local-processing claim, the conversion must happen on the user’s device and the document content must not be transmitted to a server as part of conversion. That is narrower than saying the page makes no network requests: a page may still fetch its application code, libraries, fonts, or other resources, or contact services for analytics, crash reporting, or update checks.

  • Find and replace text inside the text editor.
  • Text sharing with external application
  • Shows line numbers in text editor.

Those distinctions matter. A credible privacy explanation should describe which parts of the process are local, what network requests may still occur, and whether any content is collected. The available evidence does not establish the data flow or privacy guarantee of a specific converter, so no stronger claim about one is warranted here.

Markdown compatibility depends on the dialect

“Markdown” does not always mean identical syntax or output. The CommonMark project explains that underspecified or ambiguous syntax can render differently across implementations. CommonMark addresses this by defining a rationalized syntax with a specification and reference implementations, including JavaScript. CommonMark project README

A converter should identify whether it targets CommonMark, GitHub Flavored Markdown, or another dialect, and disclose any supported extensions. Without that information, readers cannot reliably predict how edge cases will render across tools.

How to check whether conversion stays on your device

A privacy claim is strongest when it can be checked against implementation details and observed behavior. Readers can inspect browser network activity while converting a document, but that check is a useful signal rather than a complete security audit.

  1. Open the converter and the browser’s developer tools, then select the Network panel.
  2. Clear the existing request list and load a small Markdown sample that contains no personal or confidential information.
  3. Convert the sample and inspect requests made during the operation. Look for document text or file contents in request bodies, URLs, or other transmitted data.
  4. Repeat with network access disabled after the page has loaded. If conversion still works, that supports—but does not alone prove—a local-processing claim.
  5. Review the project’s implementation or privacy documentation for external libraries, telemetry, and other services the page may contact.

Do not use sensitive material as a test sample. A local conversion result does not establish that every script on the page is trustworthy, and a page that needs a network connection to load may still process the document locally after loading.

What a useful converter should disclose

  • Supported input and output: Which document types it accepts and what it produces.
  • Markdown dialect: Whether it follows CommonMark, GitHub Flavored Markdown, or another defined syntax.
  • Data flow: Whether document contents leave the device and what non-document network activity occurs.
  • Offline behavior: Whether conversion works without a network connection, and whether that depends on first loading or installing the page.
  • Practical limits: Any file-size constraints or limitations in formatting and export quality.

These are the details that let a reader evaluate a privacy-first claim rather than relying on its wording alone. Browser-side conversion is technically plausible: for example, OfficeToAI describes using JavaScript libraries for document processing in a browser without a backend. That example illustrates an implementation pattern, not the architecture or feature set of another converter. OfficeToAI
