Why HPE De-Booked Its $700 Million AI Systems Order

HPE said customer-specific risk—not competition—led it to de-book a $700 million AI systems order in Q4 FY2024. The customer and precise concern were not disclosed.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise said it removed a $700 million AI systems order from its books in Q4 FY2024 because it had concerns about a specific customer and judged the order too risky. CEO Antonio Neri said the decision was not a competitive loss. HPE did not identify the customer or disclose the specific risk.

Why did HPE remove the order?

On HPE’s Q4 FY2024 earnings call, an analyst asked whether the $700 million de-booking reflected a competitive loss, a duplicate order, or another circumstance. Neri said HPE had booked $1.2 billion in new AI systems orders during the quarter, but removed the $700 million order because of concern about a specific customer. He said the order carried substantial risk and that removing it was prudent. Neri explicitly said it had “nothing to do with competitive.”

Who was the customer, and what risk did HPE see?

HPE did not name the customer in the earnings-call exchange, and contemporaneous reporting also described the customer as unnamed. The public statements do not explain the specific concern. They do not establish that the issue was creditworthiness, payment, contract performance, or any other particular risk, so those explanations should not be treated as fact.

An integrated 350W power supply ensures stable and reliable output for demanding computing tasks and fully loaded extended configurations.

In a separate statement to Network World, HPE said it maintained strong controls and was vigilant about engaging with sound customers, managing risk, and maintaining a diversified order book. That describes HPE’s broader approach; it does not reveal the underlying concern about this order. Network World’s December 9, 2024 report also includes analyst commentary, which is interpretation rather than an additional reason HPE gave.

How do the order and backlog figures fit together?

The figures refer to different measures and points in time, not interchangeable totals:

Figure What it describes
$1.2 billion New AI systems orders HPE said it booked in Q4 FY2024.
$700 million The order HPE said it de-booked during Q4 FY2024.
Approximately $500 million Net orders for the quarter after the de-booking, as reported from CFO Marie Myers’s remarks.
More than $3.5 billion AI systems backlog reported after quarter-end.

Myers described AI systems orders as “lumpy.” The figures are management-reported period figures from 2024, not current financial guidance. In particular, quarterly new orders, net orders after a de-booking, and subsequent backlog measure different things.

What the decision does—and does not—show

HPE’s stated explanation was customer-specific concern and a judgment that the order carried too much risk. The decision shows that HPE chose to remove a large order rather than retain it despite those concerns; Neri framed that as prudent risk management. It does not show that HPE lost the order to a competitor, and it does not establish that GPU supply, a predicted payment failure, or the customer’s expected AI returns caused the move.

Info-Tech Research Group practice lead John Annand offered broader market interpretation in Network World’s report. That commentary should be kept separate from HPE’s stated rationale: the company did not disclose more detail about the risk behind this particular de-booking.
