Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA UPS can keep Home Assistant powered through some outages and, with a configured Network UPS Tools (NUT) server, report power and battery events. It does not diagnose an automation save error, back up your configuration, or guarantee that edits will persist. Start with the exact message shown when you try to save: a validation error, an automation that saved but did not run, and a storage or recovery warning require different fixes.
First determine what “couldn’t save” means
Note the full error message and whether it appears for every automation or only one. If the automation appears in the list after you close the editor, it may have saved successfully even if it does not run. These distinctions matter: a UPS addresses power continuity, not invalid automation data or every possible storage fault.

The save dialog shows an error
Use the message to locate the problem. Home Assistant’s automation troubleshooting guidance documents invalid required fields, YAML syntax errors, and a missing name as possible save-time problems. For “Message malformed,” inspect the trigger, condition, or action field identified by the message. In YAML mode, check syntax and indentation; if you are creating a new automation, make sure it has a name.
The automation saved but does not run
That is a runtime or logic problem, not a save failure. Automations respond to changes: a trigger generally does not fire just because its condition was already true when you saved the automation. Conditions are evaluated after a trigger reacts. See How automations react to changes.

Home Assistant shows recovery mode or a filesystem warning
Check Settings > System > Logs for the specific error and follow the associated recovery guidance. Recovery mode can follow corrupted configuration storage, including after sudden power loss. A data-partition filesystem check failure is a more specific warning: the partition that holds configuration, automations, apps, and backups is corrupted, according to Home Assistant’s filesystem-check guidance.
Protect accessible data before attempting storage repairs
If Home Assistant remains accessible while reporting data-partition trouble, create a full backup and download it to a different device before further repair. If the underlying physical storage is failing, replace it before restoring. Reformatting or wiping can delete user data, so do not treat it as a first step.

For general recovery and migration planning, Home Assistant’s common tasks guidance covers full and partial backups and documents NAS and cloud destinations. Keep at least one usable recovery copy away from the Home Assistant host; a local backup on the same failing device may not be available when you need it.

| Action or option | What it does | Compatibility and destination |
|---|---|---|
backup.create |
Creates a local backup of Home Assistant configuration and the database; it does not include add-ons or extra folders. | Available for Core and Container installations. The backup is local and is not uploaded elsewhere. See Create backup. |
backup.create_automatic |
Uses the contents, destinations, password, and retention configured for automatic backups. | Available on all installation types. See Create automatic backup. |
| Backup integration and configured automatic backups | Provides backup actions and UI-configured automatic backups. | Use the configuration appropriate to your installation; see Home Assistant’s Backup integration documentation. |
| Downloaded copy, NAS, or cloud destination | Provides a recovery copy separate from the Home Assistant host. | Home Assistant documents NAS and cloud locations in its general guidance. No particular provider or storage capacity is established here. |
Home Assistant’s configured automatic backup action reuses the configured settings; it does not by itself mean that a backup has been downloaded to a separate device. Verify the destination and keep a copy you can reach if the host fails.
Do not mistake a persistent-state checkpoint for a configuration backup
homeassistant.save_persistent_states checkpoints persistent entity states; it does not back up automation configuration. Home Assistant says persistent states are normally saved at startup, every 15 minutes, and at shutdown, with this action adding an extra checkpoint. Details are in Save persistent states.

What the UPS can—and cannot—do for Home Assistant
Home Assistant’s Network UPS Tools (NUT) integration communicates with a NUT server, not directly with a UPS. The server and compatible UPS hardware must be configured separately. The integration polls its server every 60 seconds by default and can expose sensors such as battery charge and status. You can use those readings for notifications or automations—for example, to react when the UPS switches to battery power or its charge falls below a threshold.
This can improve power-event awareness and reduce exposure to abrupt outages when the equipment is configured correctly. It does not create configuration backups or prove that the host shut down cleanly. Home Assistant identifies sudden power loss and failing storage as common causes of data-partition filesystem corruption; an already-invalid automation is also unaffected by adding a UPS.
Quick Recap
Use the failure type to choose the next step
- One automation fails validation: Correct the field or YAML error named in the save message, and check that a new automation has a name.
- Automation saves but does not trigger: Check its trigger and how it reacts to changes; a condition already true at save time does not necessarily cause a trigger.
- Recovery mode appears: Review Settings > System > Logs and follow the recovery instructions for the reported issue.
- Data-partition filesystem failure appears: If the system is accessible, download a full backup to another device before repair. Investigate whether the physical storage is failing.
- You want outage notifications or battery awareness: Configure a compatible UPS with a NUT server, then use the reported sensors in automations. This monitoring does not replace off-host backups.
