Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →An old Ethereum exchange-outflow chart can change even though the transactions on Ethereum have not. The ledger records transfers; the chart provider decides which addresses count as exchange wallets and recalculates flows using that classified wallet set. When the set is revised, some historical totals may be recalculated too.
What an ETH exchange-outflow chart measures
Ethereum’s public ledger records transactions between accounts. It does not label an account as belonging to an exchange. Analytics providers first identify addresses they associate with exchanges, then aggregate transfers involving those addresses into metrics such as inflow, outflow, or netflow.

CryptoQuant’s ETH exchange-flow documentation describes average inflow or outflow in terms of the average transaction value for the day, and lists aggregate categories for all, spot, and derivatives exchanges. These are provider-defined measurements of activity involving classified wallets, not a separate record written into Ethereum. CryptoQuant’s ETH Exchange Flows API documentation

A provider’s wallet list can evolve as it discovers and validates additional exchange addresses. CryptoQuant says: “Historical data may change as new exchange wallets are discovered, added, and validated.” If the addresses included in the calculation change, the provider may recompute past flows using the updated set. That changes the chart’s historical values, not the transfers recorded on-chain.

CryptoQuant says its ETH exchange-flow history updates automatically every Tuesday at 00:00 UTC. That schedule applies to the CryptoQuant data described in its documentation; it should not be assumed to apply to Glassnode or other providers. CryptoQuant also says the endpoint does not provide point-in-time accuracy, so a current retrieval may not reproduce an earlier snapshot. The documentation labels its API version 1.3.0; that is the API documentation version, not a version number for its wallet-labeling model. CryptoQuant’s ETH Exchange Flows API documentation
How providers decide which wallets belong to an exchange
Wallet clustering groups addresses believed to share control or a service relationship. Entity attribution is the next step: associating a cluster with a named organization, such as an exchange. Neither step is encoded as an identity label in Ethereum’s transaction record.

Chainalysis explains that Ethereum’s account-based design allows investigators to use relationships such as deposit addresses consolidating funds into a service’s wallets as one clustering method. It also describes attribution as combining on-chain analysis with off-chain evidence and confidence assessment. Chainalysis cautions that “No amount of on-chain analysis alone can prove that a wallet belongs to a particular entity, because identity does not live on the blockchain.” This explains the general attribution challenge; it does not establish that CryptoQuant or Glassnode uses Chainalysis’s proprietary methods. - Provider and snapshot date: record who produced the data and when you captured or exported it. CryptoQuant warns that its cited history may change rather than preserve point-in-time values.
- Metric: distinguish total outflow from netflow, mean flow, reserve change, or a change in exchange-held supply. For example, Glassnode’s cited chart measures the 30-day change in ETH supply held in exchange wallets, rather than a daily outflow total. Glassnode’s ETH exchange-supply chart
- Entity scope: check whether the series covers all exchanges, spot exchanges, derivatives exchanges, or a single named exchange. CryptoQuant documents separate aggregate categories for all, spot, and derivatives exchanges. CryptoQuant’s ETH Exchange Flows API documentation
- Wallet coverage: check the provider’s disclosure about missing or changing labels. Glassnode says its exchange balances are derived from published exchange information and proprietary clustering, and may omit reserves for exchanges that do not disclose official addresses. What an outflow does—and does not—tell you
An outflow records movement away from addresses a provider classifies as exchange wallets. By itself, it does not establish who controls the recipient address, why the transfer happened, or what the recipient will do next. It is not proof that the sender intends to sell, accumulate ETH, or move funds into cold storage. Descriptions of exchange flows as bullish, bearish, or evidence of reduced selling pressure are interpretations, not conclusions demonstrated by the transfer record alone. How to preserve a useful comparison
- Record the source and retrieval date. Save the provider name and the date you captured the chart or exported its data.
- Write down the exact metric and scope. Note whether it is outflow, netflow, reserve change, or another measure, and whether it covers all, spot, derivatives, or specific exchanges.
- Keep both snapshots when comparing dates. If a later chart differs, label it as the provider’s current calculation rather than assuming the earlier blockchain record changed.
- Describe the result narrowly. Say that the provider’s classified exchange-wallet flows changed; do not infer motive, recipient identity, or price direction from the chart alone.
